Ashe tilted her head to the side. "As you said, but Freljord is not as inept in mechanics as you think. Though we largely depend on things that can run during the freezing cold, we could perhaps use someone who knows the ins and outs of such machinery." She didn't say it, but she was thinking of the future of Freljord - first, inevitable conflict with the more 'advanced' states - Zaun, most notably, and she could not help but wonder if Freljord would always stay this way. Obviously not, but their first goal was not to advance into hextechnology, but for peace. She sighed to herself. "Well, that's not important really."
John's next answer intrigued her slightly. "Well, I don't know if I'd like to be associated with dirty underplay." She smiled, "I don't mean to be rude, of course. But I'd rather intel from accurate sources that aren't... well, illegal." Though she knew that such morals were unfitting when one's city was endangered. "It could be useful, if we have no other choice. Though I would like to avoid that."
John listens to her then raises his arms and shakes them rapidly. "Oh.. No.. I didn't mean to make it sound like that... Sorry." He ponders on how to get something that can run through the freezing cold, it was actually a good idea and could save lives. Maybe he could come up with something... Brainstorming would have to come later of course. Either way he already heard how even the weather can sometimes claim lives. His eyes light up as she mentions how she could perhaps need someone who knows machinery and he responds happily with. "I would love to help out with that anyway. Especially if it ends up saving lives." A slight look of disappointment replaces that as she says how it's not important. "Oh."
He slowly nods in agreement. "Yeaaah, it's something that I slightly hate but, it's gotten the job done... Though I'm not going to lie I have ended up taking out at least one or two of my sources for crossing the line. The beggars and the more under represented class of civilians are okay though, very nice people I've actually given them some help before, like food or medicine. Paid for of course." He wasn't sure why he added that last part, but was pretty sure it was because he didn't want to sound like he was some type of thief or something.
Ashe merely inclined her head to show that she accepted the rather hasty apology. She didn't really think John needed to apologize for it, but it was better to keep their conversation on track. Semantics were usually very distracting. "Saving lives is a definite plus," she said, somewhat teasingly. "But I meant that we are not focusing our resources on big, mechanical advancements." She rubbed a thumb over her opposing knuckles in shallow thought. "Such things will need to be monitored carefully, however. I do not know how trusting my people are over things that are steam powered to an extreme. Horror stories about the war-machines Noxus has leaves a bitter taste in one's mouth." She eyed John, "Not that I'm saying you're untrustworthy, but you understand my concerns, I hope."
She could only listen on in mild amusement as John hastened on, listing and explaining that his job wasn't as dirty as he had first made it out to be. In truth, John did not seem to be a threat. Ashe always followed her instinct, and it has yet to fail her. She had no doubt that he would be a valuable asset once the time comes, and he seemed willing enough to work. "Of course. Though if you are to be working under me, I will make it very clear that there is a line that should not be crossed. If you wish to work independently, that is your choice too though I cannot guarantee your safety." What that meant, she did not extrapolate.
Ashe continued. "Do you have any family that will be moving to Freljord - assuming you do so, which would mean you require the necessary paperwork and such for crossing borders. I can handle that easily enough, but I would like to know what you are bringing to my city. Any past works, things like that. I am not saying that you have been formerly applied to work with us, but I believe your skills will come in handy. I will also be performing a background check, so anything you're hiding, it's best to tell me now. Know that it is very difficult to hide things from my eyes."
John slowly nodded his head as she talked. He looks down, appearing gloomy at the mention of Noxus and their war-machines. "Yeah, it's understandable. I'm pretty sure at least a few people have only seen the bad from such tech, thanks to those lovely Noxians... And partly Zaun."
He sits up straighter in his chair and crosses his arms over his chest. "Understandable, I'll make damn sure not to cross any lines you make. I'd rather not get on your bad side." He chuckles softly. "Ehehe.." On the plus side, things seemed to be going smoothly. Would be nice to be able to easily support his kid, as is traveling had gotten a bit harder... And paying for a baby sitter wasn't any fun either.
He puts a finger on his lower lip. "Mmm, I do have an adopted kid and everything I own is in the apartment back in Piltover, so not much hah.." He thinks for a second then adds. "Did you want details though? If so.. I got... A radio, couch, bed, the usual things you'd expect from someone from Piltover." He thinks on whether it's worth it to mention his little gadgets and adds. "I did make a mask that I use. It has optics and a filter. The latter is nice whenever I have to go through Zaun or anywhere with not so nice air. Then theirs a wrist pad which connects to said mask.. Very basic but it's at the moment just to help organize.. A uh.. Journal, map and compass heh. Then I have a battery pack that keeps things charged." He turns slightly red, not used to talking about this... Odd why it was embarrassing but either way. "I also have a few things I've been working on too... things powered by the sun, which now that I think about it might have to be scrapped for now." He lets out a short laugh again. "Ooo! Maybe wind power!" He smirks at the mention of background check, it was also understandable, who knows what someone could have done. Luckily he was completely clean. "I have nothing to hide." He grins widely and adds. "This is kinda exciting though, the whole thought of working for someone officially I mean, better then freelance anyway. More stable."
"Perhaps. But everyone is responsible for the use of their weaponry, at the end of the day." Ashe smiled, "Your child would be welcome to stay, though I'm not sure if she'll like it much here." She listened as John listed his personal belongings, which wasn't really what she meant. It didn't seem like too much, as she mostly meant if he'd be bringing his whole house. She pondered, wondering if there was a room suitable for his experiments.
Finally, she stood once he had concluded. "I'm afraid I'll have to cut our chat short." Ashe glanced back as a little ice bird fluttered to her shoulder, "There has been reports of a... disturbance, which demands my immediate attention." She gestured to one of her guards, who approached immediately. She quickly gave him a few instructions, which included getting identification papers from John along with a myriad of other things. "If you like, you could leave for Piltover to acquire your belongings. When you return, there will be a temporary room for your comfort... providing of course, our background check is adequate." She nodded. "I appreciate your understanding."
John chuckled and smiled back. "True that." He leaned back and shrugged. "I'm sure she'll enjoy it fine, while getting used to some of my traveling, I think she enjoys it more when I bring her along and of course I feel slightly safer."
He arched an eyebrow. "Great... You take care then, yeah?" He nodded at the guard as he approached and put up his index finger. "Sec." He pulled his pack and rummaged through it. "In here somewhere... Ah-hah! Papers!" He pulled them out smirking and handed said papers over. He looked over at Ashe and responded. "Yeah I'll head back to Piltover to get what's needed, shouldn't be too long."
He smiled and gave a quick salute. "Good luck, and if that's all I'll head off now."
