Jonathan stopped for a moment, and, getting up on one knee, looked at Melanie straight in the eyes.
"She might be nicer, but regardless of the situation, I will have you understand: it is my duty to ensure your safety, both as a medic... and as your older brother..."
"...it is also, my wish."
He'd wait for a response; if she was at least accepting of his treatment, he would go back and finish tending to her foot, aligning it and dabbing a regenerative medicine to accelerate the recovery of said broken foot.

Jonathan kept at tending to Melanie's foot while he answered her question.
"You haven't realized it yet?..."
"I have no friends left. They've all gone... and you're the one person in the family I've never came to know."
"So long as you're around... I know there's something worth living for; my friends still let me know, even though they're long gone."
"At this point, you're the only one whose existence validates everything I've tried to do: help the injured, keep justice upheld, ensure the pursuit of happiness for all..."
"...and even if it's just my younger sister...
"...it still means I might finally have someone who can understand me... you."
"I can't trust you, I have only recently opened myself to Adal, she's the only one I can truly trust."
"Thanks to you I'm broken, I can't trust people anymore, I can barley trust myself, you hurt me really bad, even though you might not have known it at the time, it took me years to open and let someone know how I truly felt."
"Turned out she didn't feel the same way I felt, I lost my only friend back then, until I met Vi and Adal."
She managed to control her tears when she talked, but that changed when she stopped talking, the tears began flowing again.

Jonathan stopped all of his actions for a moment. Then, slowly looking up at Melanie, he took off his helmet and put it on the ground next to him, but not before he drew out something from inside: a photo.
"Well, not to state the obvious..."
"...but you can always recover one's trust and respect."
"You can never recover a friend, however." With that, he flipped the photo, showing its contents to Melanie.
It was definitely an aged photo, likely several decades old. A group of boys were all sitting around in front of the academy, which remarkably did not appear to change over the years. They were all smiling, all looking at the camera... except for one; he was looking down, as if he was caught unprepared for the photo.
"The boy who's looking down's me. It's a picture of me and my friends; the only friends I've ever had. Of the 9 of us that all went into that war, I'm the only one left."
"It's always possible to redeem oneself in another's eyes... if they're alive."
"...at this point, you're all I have left. Mom, Dad & relatives have already moved on from me, accepting that I'm now able to take care of myself now, and my friends have moved on too."
"If I have to give up too much to earn your trust, well... at least it can be known I tried." With that, he went back to remedying her broken foot; it was almost healed.
"There's only one thing that I know for sure is true: 'Truth is relative.'" -Jon
"What side you're on isn't of concern to me. What is of concern is that you're hurt, and I need to treat you for it." -Jon
"Contrary to what some believe, violence does not solve everything. In fact, it solves nothing." -Jon
She looked at the photo, biting the inside of her lips to try not to cry. Her foot began hurting now, even though she had broken it a while ago, she had just been to busy to acknowledge the pain in the foot.
"I'm still going to Zaun, my life is there, my girlfriend is there. I can't let a stupid injury stop me from going home, ask mom and dad later for my address, they have it, since they sent the letter."

Jon had finally finished treating Mel's foot; administering the restrengthening serum, he packed up his medkit, and replaced his photo, picking back up his helmet.
"Oh, by all means go back. Mom and Dad probably just wanted to be sure you're around anyways; not like they've missed you or me that much at this point."
"But... do try to realize that your one current friend's not the only one watching out for your back. Not so long as I'm around."
"Oh, and do take it easy on your foot for the next half hour or so; it'll let it heal faster, and at the end you'll have it back to normal."
"Well, it's getting a little bit late, so... so long, sis' I'll let Mom and Dad know what you've been up to."
Putting on his helmet, he looked at Melanie's eyes for just a moment: there seemed to be something behind his eyes... the next moment however, he gave a sharp salute, wheeled around, and left.
His feelings were conflicted, yet content; a secret was finally uncovered, and in spite of the ugliness that ensued, he at least was happy to know that he might finally be able to have something he always wanted again...
"Thanks, I guess..." she said as he finished her foot, she saw him walking away, yet something didn't feel right, "Hey, come by Zaun if you want to talk some day!" she shouted as he walked away. With that she stood up again, looking down towards the docks, it wasn't far, she decided to walk down there and rest until the next boat to Zaun arrived.

Jon paused as he heard Mel call to him; he turned his head, smiling for the first time since he had met her.
"I'll be sure to remember to do that," he replied, his smile turning into some hybrid of a smile-smirk as he nodded, and then turned forward and continued walking.
The day was certainly an interesting one: he started the day anticipating a friend of his parents, came to learn it was her younger sister - who he never knew existed until now - and had an argument over who was right in doing what, only to realize he was all he essentially had left.
A mercurial day, for sure... but one that left a hope for a bright future.
