Sebastien spun around, eyes widening as he recognized the young Crownguard. His azure eyes traveled down the length of her body extremely fast--a once-over that he did shamelessly--before snapping back to her face. His eyes wandered to the seat she was in--no one had seated themselves on his left yet. Although he saw no initial problem with Lux sitting there, the Laurent still hesitated.
"No, eet is not." he murmured, covering his mouth briefly to hide a frown. The Laurents and the Crownguards did not speak much, truth be told, and Sebastien's father had never specified a particular reason why. But if all Crownguards spoke like Lux...all overwhelmingly cheerful...well, Sebastien could already see why.
Isabelle cocked her head as she tried to identify Lux. Thinking thoughtfully as she finished the vegetables on her plate, she brushed the matter aside. If the girl wasn't invited to her family's or her fiance's socials, then she must not be very important, non? Satisfied with her own answer, she chose to remain quiet, happy to steadily finish her food and let Sebastien continue his conversation.
Sebastien took a sip of wine as he recomposed himself. This time, his eyes avoided everyone's as he drank slowly, eyes staring darkly ahead. As he brought the champagne flute down, he rested his face on his right palm."Eet is a shame zat Adrien 'as excused 'imself." he simpered. "He would be very thrilled to meet a lady as fine as you."
His eyes crinkled as he smiled, although the expression never did manage to bring any warmth to them. "We were actually just speaking about--what ees zat word again--ah, soulmates. And what about you, Miss Crownguard? I suppose you must 'ave many suitors."
Despite determinedly keeping on the same topic prior to the interruption, Sebastien unwittingly fell into Lux's plan of drawing attention away from the Solari.

The instant Lux appeared, she had three sets of eyes on her. Her sudden appearance almost startled the Solari. Conditioned for battle, they were always on alert for sudden movements and events. The adrenaline quickly drained from their eyes, however, and Leona's two companions focused on their dining once more, but Leona's eyes lingered on her and Sebastien. It was obvious that Sebastien was displeased, with both Lux's interruption and Lux herself. Leona could assume it was all deliberate on her part. The timing of her arrival was certainly not coincidence.
Sebastien was now placed against two opponents without his brother to restrain him, which made Leona curious to see how he would handle the situation. She took another sip from her glass of water, all the while maintaining eye contact. The man recomposed himself, and this time launched his attack against Lux. He had an odd tendency for malice in his compliments, and had likely never delivered a genuine one in his life. For the time being, Leona would let Lux deal with him, but she remained ever vigilant and ready to throw herself in.

Inwardly, Lux nodded her approval of her success. The reputation of Sebastien in particular preceded himself, and Lux had no intentions of letting him one, give Demacia a bad name here, and two, make the stay of the Solari unpleasant. While she hadn't personally interacted with any of the Laurent household beyond Fiora, she wasn't about to let that stop her. Instead, she settled herself properly into her seat, turning to greet the woman briefly. "Lady Isabelle. A pleasure as always," she said, dipping her head - she couldn't curtsy in her seat - her voice polite and neutral. She could tell by the woman's reaction to her appearance that she thought Lux beneath her notice. The mage scoffed inwardly - if the woman didn't recognise her, then she didn't deserve to be introduced. She'd seen her too, from afar, and knew that she matched her partner quite well.
Sebastien's words made her mentally wince - it was very clear he was again doing what he'd always done. Lux's gaze flicked briefly across the room as she searched for the aforementioned brother, but having failed to spot him, she returned her attention to Sebastien. "I'm sure that Adrien can speak for himself, though if you believe that he thinks that I'm obliged to accept the compliment, sir," she responded, keeping on her guard for his questions-
And there it was, the questions that everyone asked her about. Who have you got your eye on? What are you looking for in a husband?
When are you getting married?
Ugh. As if it's any of their business! Sometimes Lux wanted to say she was looking for a wife to shock their noses out of her private life.
Aloud, she said, "I have responsibilities to the Demacia, my King, and the Institute of War, to name a few. My life is full of far too many duties to even consider marriage."
And even if I wanted any suitors, I doubt I'd tell you first. Lux held the thought in her mind, letting none of her dislike show on her face, her expression one that had been perfected in the long years appearing in Court. She recognised Sebastien for what he was now: A man hungry for power. While she respected Fiora, she didn't feel the same way for the man before her, and she would not let anything like that close to her own House.

Sebastien raised an eyebrow as he considered Lux's words. It was clear she was very much unlike Isabelle, who adored the idea of being married and the idea of finding her true love. He tugged at his collar, bothered for some reason he could not pinpoint.
"What a shame." he intoned, in response to Lux's final statement. "A similar mindset to my sister. Alas, when zee time inevitably comes, I 'ope your family finds a suitable suitor."
Cutting himself another slice of meat from his plate, Sebastien considered his next action. Lux was certainly used to the noble's games of words. Polite and perfectly neutral, Sebastien knew better than to prod her for more details. They would be easily deflected back at him, something he was not keen on dealing with. And I was just beginning to get to the touchier subjects, he bemoaned inwardly.
He turned his gaze back to Lux and noticed Adrien returning back to the table. His younger brother slowed as he approached, seeing Lux in the once-empty seat. Face impassive, Adrien dropped back into his seat on the other side of Isabelle.
"My lady." he intoned to Isabelle.
Sebastien smiled. "Ah, Adrien. May I introduce to you to zee ravishing Lady Crownguard? She 'as honoured us with zee pleasure of her company."
Leaning forward, Adrien caught Lux's eye squarely. "Mademoiselle Crownguard, I don't believe we 'ave met personally. Adrien Laurent. A pleasure to meet you." He said this very smoothly, as if reading off a script. Her name was one that he was of course familiar with, especially among his equally eligible dueling friends.
"Yes, it always a pleasure to meet civilized members of proper society." Sebastien added snidely, although very quietly, so that one must strain to hear him over the chitchat of the dining hall.

Lux seemed to handle the man's intrusion well. Her expression masked whatever her feelings might have been toward the man effectively. Her response seemed to be one she used before. Being her young, cheerful, and altogether fairly easily approachable self, it would not surprise Leona if she had been asked similar questions several times already.
Lux's thoughts on the matter mirrored her own. She had rarely spent much time thinking on romance or even marriage, there were far too many things which took greater importance. She had her duty to the Solari, the sun, her people, and most of all, her purpose which she did not yet know, yet it was the only reason she lived longer than the age of sixteen. She wondered why she was there, listening to some idiot run his mouth when she still had some great unfulfilled purpose that she could be seeking. It was infuriating.
Now, the idiot even thought that he could sneak in comments without her hearing. She had already focused her full attention on his voice, otherwise she would have easily missed what he had said. She vehemently loathed how so many off the mountain found themselves entitled to call the Rakkor savage barbarians for their fondness for war. Every time they did so, they ignored their own people's penchant for killing, on grander and more twisted scales than the "barbarians" of Mount Targon. The Rakkor did not try to deny their warlike nature, and for that they were somehow worse than other civilizations. She could have said something, but she chose to continue to remain in silence, but her glare still locked on his eyes would perhaps hint to the man that what he had said did not go unheard.

Liliana hid her smile behind a mask of serenity, though she curled her own fingers around Jarvan's own all the same. "Things will work out." She replied, her voice ever soft as the food was brought out. "I trust you will see to it." She squeezed the King's hand gently before removing it slowly and resting it on her lap, casting her eyes to the tables in front.
There appeared to be a conflict of some kind, subtle as it usually was, between the guests of honor and the Laurents. While Liliana personally never enjoyed meddling in the messy affairs of the royal houses of Demacia, it was her duty to be,at the very least, informed of such matters. As her meal was served, she took a brief second to thank the waiter with a soft smile. He merely nodded in response and moved away to serve the next plate.
She pressed a dainty forkful of salad into her mouth just as the young Crownguard daughter appeared seemingly out of nowhere, almost forcibly injecting herself into the conversation. The trick itself did not surprise her, but Liliana did chuckle to herself quietly. While she did not know Luxanna Crownguard all too personally, her sparkling personality was legendary. No doubt it would be an interesting sweetener to the otherwise sour mood that was on display.
Liliana ate in relative silence, neither commenting nor speaking and simply observing. Her time on the Shadow Isles had left the Queen's throat somewhat sore after extended periods of speaking. She did, however, glance towards Jarvan from time to time either to relay some unspoken thought or merely to be comforted by his presence.

With all the effort placed in the meal presented to him, Jarvan IV was still only barely distracted from the events playing out across the dining hall. Liliana's words cut through his concentration, and he missed her hand as soon as it slipped from him. Trust. Trust was what he needed, now more than ever. He hadn't his father's long history of success, no years of experience on which to rely. All his training, his years as a champion and a diplomat, were shaky footing for the orchestration of a nation. Sure, he had a measure of equity, left him by his father, carved into his last name. Topher's quiet certainty was testament to that. The man had hardly spoken to Jarvan IV before his father's death. Now, he supported him with council and the same unshakable loyalty he had shown Jarvan III. He wasn't alone on the Council of Nobles.
Still, out of all the stalwart allies and family ties lending weight to his words, Liliana's trust was the greatest comfort. He brought his hand back to his own armrest, still half absorbed in the body language of his guests at the center table. He'd noticed Luxanna slip into a veil of light, and his heart lept in his throat without touching his lips. He counted seconds, but her reveal was less impactful than he expected. The situation was becoming more worrisome.
"My love, have you met Fiora Laurent or her brothers?" He though a change of pace might calm things down. Jarvan IV touched his food absentmindedly and kept his attention forward.

Lux felt one corner of her lips curl in a slight smile. One could even call it a smirk, if not for the innocent cheer that the mage was known for. "Yes, it seems that perhaps I share more in common with your sister than others of your House." Like you, great lummox. How dare you think to remark on my marriage arrangements. That's my personal business.
The choice of words with which Sebastien introduced her to Adrien made the girl wince inwardly. Honestly, ravishing? Not something that suits me. He has bad taste. Aloud, she said, "The pleasure is mutual, Sir Adrien." Her words sounded as polished and practiced as his did, her tone still the same neutral politeness.
Upon hearing the quiet comment that Sebastien had made, the girl's eyes narrowed, though her expression remained the same. She could tell by Leona's expression that the warrior had also heard. Lux's already-high opinion of the Solari rose several notches - she had no idea how the woman was handling the Laurent brothers so smoothly.
But it was time to put an end to the man's posturing. Sometimes Lux spoke in riddles, preferring the way of espionage and secrecy that came with her training in the Demacian Service Brigade and her further solo missions. Other times it was better to confront an issue head on - as it was suitable in this sense, Lux having long-gotten the sense that the Laurent brothers operated in snide remarks and the poisonous gossip of the Court. The problem with that was that they often were caught out if directly addressed.
"Your words do nothing but discredit the standing of yourself and your House," she said flatly, going for truth. "Mind your tongue, for what you say does not cast good light on our state."
Post by The Grand Duelist on Aug 10, 2014 7:42:54 GMT -5
There was the slightest intake of breath unanimously as the Laurents reacted to Lux's blunt statement. Isabelle looked bewildered, unused to hearing such direct declarations. Adrien blinked, any politeness on his expression seeping away, leaving an inscrutable mask not unlike his brother.
Sebastien chuckled, unfolding his napkin and dabbing his lips with it. Mind my tongue? He sniffed, brushing his nose gently before looking Lux straight in the eye, the first time his face matched his eyes--cold and heartless."Miss Crownguard,I see no disservice done wiz my words. Why, zee tone and phrasing of your words--should eet 'ave come from a man--would warrant a duel." He shrugged, allowing a moment of silence as he attempted to drag the conversation back into the comfortable embrace of convoluted remarks. "I 'ave a considerable amount of respect for your family, so I will allow zee slight on my family's standing and on our role in Demacia to pass."
Adrien listened wordlessly, carefully checking his fingernails. The facade of politeness on the Laurents was quickly crumbling. Their family had been shoved down the ranks of the nobility hierarchy, their father's fall had been an endless source of gossip and scandal, and the contention with the title of Head of House had shaken the foundation of their family. And now Luxanna, daughter of the Crownguards--favored lapdogs to the Lightshields, decided to critique their honor? The two Laurents followed this train of thought almost identically.
"Ah, look what you 'ave done." Adrien intoned, directing his words at Leona and the Solari. His lips curled, and at that moment, he looked very much like his brother. It was quite startling, as if someone perfectly normal had removed their mask, revealing a sinister visage underneath. "It seems to me zat your presence in Demacia 'as only pit houses against each other. What a shame--and we were getting along so well before. Perhaps our King 'as yet to see zat Demacia does not need protection from zee outside--we need it for zee inside." The words were deliberately cryptic, and Adrien instinctively shot a glance at the front of the room, where King Jarvan sat with Queen Liliana. Uneasy lies zee head zat wears a crown. The tension at the table was palpable.

Liliana smiled, adverting her eyes briefly to make contact with her King. "Indeed, I have had the pleasure of meeting with Lady Laurent though it saddens me to admit we did not talk as much as I would like to." She glanced down at her plate and while her surprise could not be seen, she looked to be concerned about something. Her food looked untouched, the salad barely moved and the chicken bone still fat with meat. It made her almost nauseous to look at and she put down her fork. Liliana swallowed lightly.
Her sky-blue eyes trained on the table of interest, feeling the way the stormy temperaments rose almost visibly from the heads of those involved. She could not quite hear what was being said but it appeared Luxanna was intending to stand her ground against the duo of Laurent nobles. "As for her brothers," Liliana said quietly, having not forgotten the ending to Jarvan's question. "I have not spoken to the younger, but I know of Sebastien Laurent." She twisted her fingers into her napkin, bringing it up to dab her mouth despite the absence of crumbs or smears. "We were... acquaintances, I suppose. In the past."
Oh, how the past had so quickly been forgotten but to Liliana, it seemed like it had only happened yesterday. Time in the Shadow Isles did not pass very rapidly at all and it all but distorted the Queen's senses. Regardless, she re-imagined the charming smile, the kinder-hearted boy who had dreams in pails. A wry smile was hidden behind the embroidered cloth, watching as the younger Laurent glanced her way and Liliana lowered the serviette enough to offer a visible smile before returning her gaze to Jarvan.
"Will they cause a commotion?" She queried then. Despite it all, she was still concerned. "I very much doubt our Solari guests will be impressed by such an abrasive attitude." Liliana cast her eyes towards Sebastien in particular, almost hoping to make eye contact and reprimand him at the same time. While their ages were almost in sync, it seemed to her that the man had barely grown while she had aged further than her life in Runeterra.

Lux could hardly believe her ears. "I can see why your house fell into such disrepute now," she said coolly, her heart pounding with rage. "Fiora has done a good enough job to retain its honour, but with brothers like you around Court with nothing but an eye for ambition - and at the expense of all else...Hmph, I can see why Fiora took charge instead of either of you." At least she can keep a cool head and her wits.
Her gaze narrowed as she looked the pair over. "Should it have come from a man?" Her angry glare transformed into a sickeningly sweet smile. "My dear Master Laurent, you speak to one of the best of the Demacian Service Brigade. My brother is the Might of Demacia and one of our state's most decorated soldiers. I have one of the highest military backgrounds in Demacia - and you would look down on me because I am a woman? Hrm." Her disdain was clear as she sniffed - while Lux didn't particularly like the high-handed way that nobles often spoke to eachother, she could do it with the best of them.
"But then, I shouldn't be surprised by that attitude - after all, that would explain why Fiora sits as Head as opposed to you. Clearly you underestimate or think very little of the military prowess of females." Unlike either Sebastien or Adrien, Lux was someone who did not waste time with two-faced talk, preferring to challenge verbally if she must. After all, she preferred to banish the shadows, and illuminate the truth. All this cryptic nonsense was just that: nonsense. "If you must know, my loyalties still lie with Demacia, and always will. Given a choice between the Solari or the House Laurent, and I would choose the latter - but only if it was the Lady Fiora I could fight beside." After all, at least the woman's arrogance was justified by her dueling expertise. Her brothers, while laying claim to a talent with their blades, had sharper tongues. No doubt they'd be offended by Lux's choice of phrase - but then Lux meant to illustrate her trust of Fiora's swordsmanship and her lack of faith in their own.
Finished with them, she looked over at Leona. "I feel that this company is far too...hostile for my liking. I apologise. Would you and your companions like to accompany me? I think I will go sit with Shyvana - the lady and her companions are ones that I've worked beside, and I find they'd make more...civilised company."

The man might have been amusing, were he not so idiotic and disrespectful toward her. He seemed to be so certain of the superiority of himself and his house that he did not seem to think about or even wholly comprehend the words that came from his mouth. Hector took greater offense to her, and in a tone loud enough to be heard, he spoke in the native language of the Rakkor to Leona. "Kyria, allow me to make him answer for his disrespect." Hector tensed in preparation in the event he was allowed to. "Restrain yourself for now. This is not home." Leona replied in the same language. Hector obeyed, although clearly not happy with his orders. Next to take care of was Adrien. "I see nothing here which is not of your own doing." She replied, still calm, but ready to unleash her verbal wrath were the man to take another foolish step down the path he had already taken. Lux's offer was a welcome reminder that she was not alone at the table, but she would have to respectfully decline. She would force the Laurents from her table, not the other way around. "Thank you, but I must respectfully decline. I should try to familiarize myself with the more colorful side of Demacian nobility." She spoke it as an insult to the Laurents, but she at the same time was having second thoughts about the alliance. How could a state with men like these in positions of power possibly be of help to the Solari?

After following the discussion between the nobles for a while, Poppy scoffs with a chuckle. What she has done? From what I've seen during the years I've worked as Ambassador of my people, this is a most common event. Nobles squabbling amongst themselves about pointless things, causing drama so they can make their own status higher. Such pointless pursuits, if you ask any yordle.
She leans her elbows against the table, staring at the Adrien with her usual steeled gaze.
We've lived for centuries in peace, with everyone equal to one another, working together for our kind's benefit, while humans form nations that vary in point of view so heavily, that they choose to kill each other for power over the other.
Demacia needs protection for within indeed... for the common folk. Those who live their lives, working to keep the city running. The soldiers, the builders, the farmers. Those who spend their lives making yours easier. What has your status done for you, Laurent?
Poppy takes a sip from the glass in front of her, filled with simple water.
It has only forced you to watch your behaviour more, or lose it. I pity you, for you must make certain that every step you take is the correct one, as nobility is expected to be one step above the rest.
I have barely ever met the residents of Mount Targon before, yet I have more respect for them than any nobles within Demacia, for they live without internal squabble, without rank. They live, simply to survive and fight with honor, and not for politics.

Sebastien listened stiffly as Lux continued, raising his eyebrows in apparent amusement as she listed her impressive feats. His expression darkened, however, as Lux mentioned her allegiance with his sister. The Laurents were almost identical in their poise, completely frozen as they listened to the onslaught. The little...she doubts my ability as a duelist. Sebastien's right hand twitched violently as he took this information in, but he restrained himself as he noticed Leon'a guard tensed, both obviously ready to rise and react. The Crownguard girl had pushed the right buttons if she wished to truly anger him. Clenching his hand slowly into a fist, he clenched his jaw before loosening up again, the anger fading only to his eyes.
"Yes, listen to zee Solari. No need to for zat, Mademoiselle Crownguard. I zink I shall be taking my leave now. Eet is obvious zat I am surrounded by zee misguided and zee common-bred. And I wish nothing to do wiz eet." Sebastien spoke bitterly in response to Lux's suggestion to Leona. He stood up in his seat, adjusting the ring on his finger. Adrien stood up as well, exhaling in apparent disgust at the scene. Isabelle, whose mouth looked like it would be permanently slack-jawed if she didn't change her expression soon, hurried up as well, clutching Sebastien's arm.
Sebastien's gaze fluttered to the main table and caught Liliana's. For a second, he faltered, not expecting the contact. But his lips slowly pursed as he nodded briefly to her before turning back to the unseemly group in front of him.
The Laurent brothers turned as Poppy made her remark. Adrien snorted. "Eet seems to me, Ambassador, zat zee correct step you speak of is zee one out the door. Compliment zee Solari all you want. I see very little to praise."
With that said, Adrien followed his brother and Isabelle towards the exit, knowing that many eyes, especially the King's and Queen's, would be on them. But it was his sister's that he knew Sebastien would feel the most.

The corner of Leona's mouth lifted up in a slight smile as the two brothers grew only more aggravated and conceded defeat. The brothers flung many last minute insults which they would have not dared to say in any other setting before they fled. The behavior of those who believed they were beyond reproach. Leona wordlessly shifted her gaze away and began to eat her portion of food, a far more pleasant task than her previous one. "I wonder how many generations of inbreeding were required to produce them." Said Selen, speaking a thought which had gone through the minds of all three of the Solari. Nobility was very seldom held in any esteem on Mount Targon.
