Gillam sat at the edge of his bed, staring into the pendant entwined around his neck. It was one of the few things that had come from Gillam's are, other than his lance, sword, armor, and shield. The pendant was special to him, as it was one of the few things that survived from Gillam's personal life.
He heard a knocking on the front door. Who could be visiting him. Gillam concluded that it must have been one of the other nobles, come to give him a welcoming gift, or at least a necessary hand shake.
Gillam hurried down the steps and opened the door. He looked up and saw a tall man clad in black armor from head to toe standing at the door. The previous nobles who had visited him were dressed in regular clothing. However, this was the first time one in armor showed up.
"Greetings. How may I assist you?" Gillam asked to the man, seeing one of his servants gesturing towards him. The knight sent him off with a wave of his hand. "I am Gillam Dunwall. It is very nice to meet you." Gillam extended his hand, trying to be as poilite as he could without being too up front. "And you are?"
"No matter the era, I am Demacian, through and through."

As he removed his helmet and rested it on his hip, Victus thought briefly on the proper procedure for shaking hands as the hand was offered. Strong or loose?...Damn it all, he was a warrior, not a noble prince-ling in a tin can. Why was he sent instead of one of Tiberius's sons? He quickly decided that the proper course was loose, as to show friendly intentions and shook the offered hand.
"I am Victus Brightblade, Last Son of the Grimcleaver Clan, Oathsworn of the Brightblade House and Oathsworn of the Freljord Clan. I am here to officially welcome back the Dumwall house into Demacia's fold on behalf of the Baron Tiberius Brightblade and Brightblade House of the Eastern coasts."
Victus stated in a dry tone. As he personally thought titles should only be used to show respect to another, he disliked stating his own titles, but Tiberius had insisted that he do what he could to show he wasn't some man-at-arms, but someone with some clout. Again the thought of why he was here instead of some noble entered Victus's mind, but he was sworn to obey, and he would.

"Ah, I see. What a mouthful of a title you have there." Gillam chuckled, trying to break the ice. Gillam glanced back inside the estate to see one of his servants rushing to the door. Gillam waved her off with a flick of his wrist. She reluctantly resumed her cleaning duties.
"So, you're a fighter, are you?" Gillam asked, sizing up Victus's armor. "I am a soldier too. Well, I was a soldier, and still am a soldier..." Gillam sighed. "If you do not know already, I am from the Third Rune War era. I was frozen in a cave in Freljord, and was reawakened just recently. Things are so different these days..." The last sentence seemed to be more addressed to himself, as he stared won at his feet, lost in memories.
"No matter the era, I am Demacian, through and through."

"To be frank, I think most noblemen who have titles hide behind them, so I would not have told you mine without being told I had to. I am a blade first and a noble never. Such politics are beyond my understanding and I prefer it that way." Victus replied, without a change in tone. His eyes as cold of Freljord Winter, but not harsh, just...unfeeling.
"As for how the world has changed...it has not. Men live and die by the sweat of their brow and the orders of summoners. Noxus and Demacia still sit at each others' throats and warriors are asked to do battle. They have their arena for their battles now, but armies still sit and wait for the order to strike. Is that so different than your time?"
Post by Gillam Dunwall on Feb 6, 2013 21:31:56 GMT -5
"Not really...however, it pains me to wake up with the fact that I don't belong here. I was meant to die out in the cold wastes of Freljord. My friends and family are lost to the ages, strange things are occurring in Runeterra. Sometimes I just wish I hadn't been unfrozen at all."
Gillam sighed, looking back up at Victus. "I also agree about your statement about noblemen. Even though I have inherited this Estate for my House, I was born a soldier, and I shall remain a soldier first."
"No matter the era, I am Demacian, through and through."

"Speaking of soldiers, may I ask about your own recruitment? A noble house needs men-at-arms if nothing else. With the rumors going about, you would be wise to not tarry in getting soldiers on your grounds. I can name a few mercenaries hungry for work if that would be of service. A household smith would also be good if you have the funds and the space."

"That is true...if my estate were to be under assault, it would be helpful having a few other men at my disposal. After all, my servants are not experienced in combat, and in the rare event of an attack on Demacia, I doubt I would be able to hold off any hostiles by myself."
"As for a smith, I would probably only use his repairing services. Sure, extra weapons wold be nice at times, however, my lance and my buckler are the few things remaining from my past life. To get rid of those would be like letting go a part of me, and I couldn't bring myself to do such a thing."
"No matter the era, I am Demacian, through and through."

"Few things match a weapon you have known for years. The Brightblade's house smith forged my blade and it has lasted me 12 years. The steel is good, not the best, but when you have used a blade that long, every other blade feels wrong."
"As for the Mercenaries, stay Demacian. Demacians are the only ones you can trust. Freljordian mercs are often Barbarian exiles, and Piltoverians don't know which end of the blade to hold. Noxians and Zaunites go without saying. Several of the demacian guilds are out of work with the League sanctions on warfare, so they will be eager to take up garrison work. Easy pay and for an honorable client."

"I could not agree more. The prince offered me an extensive armory of weapons to choose from, but I turned the offer down. My lance and my shield were my weapons in the Rune War, and they shall remain my weapons to this day."
"As for the mercs, I should probably start searching for those soon. Thanks for the advice. I still might have chosen Demacians, but your opinion solidifies my choice. After all, under no circumstance will I work with Noxians or any allies of them. I made an oath to King Jarvan I to fulfill this duty, and I shall honor it even though he has been dead for quite some time."

"Not all Noxians are worthy of your ire. Riven...shows potential, but she seems a bit off. Darius would as well, but for his adherence to Noxian command structures. I don't know if they have changed over the past few eras, but Noxians turn a blind eye to mutiny now, if the commander is deemed inept. Many mutinies and dead commanders paved the way for General Darius to rise up to Swain's right hand.
Also be aware the Demacian Mercenaries stationed just outside of Demacia will likely be cheaper and more experienced. More bandits out there. Many of the soldiers there also fought in Kalamanda, so they have recent experience with Noxians. For arms, you want many archers who can also use single handed weapons, to better defend against siege. Rangers would work, but they are more often than not insubordinate and hate garrison duty."

"Ambassador Poppy told me all about Riven. It made me realize that not all Noxians are terrible people that are mant to die. At least, that was how my commanding officer shaped them out to be. However, the tale of Riven makes me believe that you should never judge a book by its cover."
"Coin does not matter to me that much, although, if they are more experienced, then I am all ears. Insubordinate men may be trouble at times, but if they can fight, I will take them...after all, I made an insubordinate desicion, and it is one I have regretted ever since I was unfrozen..."

"As a Lord, your mind must stay open. That open mindedness is why I am not house-less right now. I can respect your decision, but I cannot agree with you taking in Rangers. Rangers simply are not suited for garrison work. They wander too much. They dislike command structure. Frankly, I think the lot of them are cowards who like to hide in trees and shoot men in the back. There are better men looking for work in a garrison."

"Alright, I shall take that advice. I was never a commander, only a soldier. Just a pawn in the game of war." Gillam sighed, then continued. "Running an entire house seems by yourself seems like it would take a lot of work. Even if you weren't a soldier, you'd still have to go through all the hiring, paperwork signing, formal dinners...do you suppose I would need an heir?"

"Nor would I pretend to tell you how to deal with the lords in Demacia who do not know the blades they bear on their hips. What I can say is that you need to meet with the city lords soon, at one of their....parties." Victus spat that last word out like it was disgusting. Victus's code required him to be respectful of lords, but it did not ask for him to view them favorably.
"You best be ready for when the lords of Demacia are called to arms. That day is coming. When it does, maybe you will be at Brightblade's side and I will see how an ancient warrior fights." Victus says this with no joy, but cold calculation. His mind ever seeking new experiences in combat to better combat new foes.

"I would look forward to seeing your combat skills. After all, I have yet to see the fighting techniques of my own modern nation, much less any modern form of battle. Due to the magical restrictions of your time, I assume less has been taught about defense from the arcane. There were all kinds of techniques...move when you see the blinding light..."
Gillam chuckled at his terrible attempt at humor. Clearing his throat awkwardly, he continued. "Speaking of parties, I have been invited to one that is occurring in about a week. A couple of houses are coming to accept me into the new Demacia. Hopefully it isn't too formal..."
((I'll PM you about this later. Hopefully we can get De Vera, and possibly some other Demacians in on this.))
