Name: James Marker
Alias: 'Dragonbrains' (As a rude nickname)
Class: Warrior
Race: Human
Age: 25
Occupation: Private Dracoanalyst; freelance bodyguard/warrior
Residence: Demacia
Alignment: Lawful Good
Abilities: James has experience in the Demacian army, having served for five years before leaving to continue his studies into Dragons.
Due to his training, he is handy with a sword and shield technique. He wields an Arming Sword with his right arm and a broad shield with his left. When fighting in formation, he is adept at fighting off almost all assailants; in a one on one fight, he is at least capable of standing his ground on fair terms unless far outclassed or overpowered.
He prefers a defensive stance, waiting for his opponent to wear themselves out before striking.
He has a grand total of no experience when it comes to mounted combat. He cannot fight on a horse, and he’s horribly unskilled at fending off someone on a horse. Likewise, he has difficulty fighting anyone not within arm’s reach, such as spearmen or men with polearms.
He has no magic ability, and is utterly ignorant of most types of magic.
In theory, he is knowledgeable of combat against dragons. He has studied any books available to him on the subject, giving him a well-to-do understanding of their physiology and basic habits, such as hunting and habitats. However, he is not only completely incapable of fighting a dragon one on one, he isn't even sure how much of his knowledge would apply to combat; he very much rues the day he may have to fight a dragon, even with allies.
If he was attacked by a dragon, he would immediately find cover that was fireproof or at least relatively fire resistant, and would avoid fighting in armor; while armor offers good defense against mortals, dragon breath is incredibly hot, and would cook him alive, while speed is vital to survival. He would attempt to stab the dragon in the left armpit, not slashing or hacking, and aim for the heart or a similarly fatal wound. However, this would only be if the dragon attacked him; if he had it his way, he would rather talk it out.
Relationships: Shyvana: Once served under her while in the army; he stayed on two extra years while he was under her command. He does not know her too closely on a personal level, but is awe-inspired by the fact that she’s actually half-dragon, and does know her rather well on a professional level.
Jarvan IV: His king. He will serve him honorably in any command given, although he would have internal struggles if the command went against his personal morals. Has never met in person.
Jarvan III: Likewise to Jarvan IV, he will serve him faithfully in any command, but has never met him personally. [DECEASED]
Description: James is a slightly-above-average height man, around 5’11". He’s thin, but strongly built. He has a kind face, with calm gray eyes and thin lips. His hair is blonde and thick, often messed up slightly, but rather intentionally. In normal conditions, he wears a loose-fitting, comfortable black vest with a cloth pauldron thrown over his shoulders, as well as boots and well-worn pants.
If he suits up for battle, he wears his (relatively) old Demacian battle armor. It’s mostly standard issue, however; relatively bulky, but well-built, and emblazoned in blue, gold, and silver. However, being no longer in the military, he has carefully removed the military crest wherever he could find it. His shield comes from the same set and is standard Demacian issue, as well.
His sword was custom-forged for him, but isn't much special outside of the appearance. It’s a normal arming sword, around two and a half feet long, made of sharpened steel. The hilt is shaped in the form of a dragon, with the blade stemming from the mouth, the wings forming the guard, and the tail and body forming the handle. It is, however, rather light and very well-balanced for his use.
James's personality isn't rude or boisterous; he doesn't like to impose himself on others, and often keeps to himself. However, he will often shout down anyone who breaks his code of personal conduct, and he often ends up in a fight because of it. He enjoys fighting, but takes it as it comes, not intentionally seeking it out.
He’s very strict, and will obey his higher-ups to the letter, only correcting them if it’s quite clear that their decision is bad. His moral code is just as strict as he is; always put others before yourself, always think your actions through before acting, always fight for those who can’t fight themselves, and always hold yourself in the proper conduct.
While preferring not to talk, his words are often short and simple, not wanting to waste time or energy. He doesn't like people who beat around the bush or anyone who tries to trick people with complicated terms, and will often call for them to stop and give it straight. He believes very deeply in the old adage ‘If you can’t explain it to your grandmother so that she knows exactly what you mean, you don’t know enough about your subject,’ and if you ignore this credo, he’ll often begin treating you as if you’re completely ignorant.
When fighting, he is honorable, and will neither strike from the shadows nor against a far outclassed fighter (unless in the heat of war). He would never resort to cheap tricks such as throwing dirt in their face, and if someone accuses him of cheating, he will quite often beat them into a pulp.
James becomes a different man when he’s discussing the topic of dragons, however; he becomes a combination of a scientist and an excited child. He can talk for ages on the topic of dragons; their physiology, their history, their preferred climates, all that. Any who know him know that they should avoid the topic of dragons with him unless they themselves are interested in the subject.
Biography: James was born to a simple Demacian family; while he wasn’t in a noble family, he wasn’t at the least very badly off, and he lived a happy childhood.
Growing up, he was mostly a normal kid, except for one thing; while all the children his age were certainly entranced by stories of heroism, he was completely obsessed with them. He collected stories by both word of mouth and physically, and while his book collection certainly didn’t rival that of a nobleman or an adult even, it was quite impressive.
His special favorite was always stories relating to dragons. He didn’t care much whether the dragons were evil or good. He just cared that they were there. He was so entranced by the stories of dragons told to him by his father and family, he could repeat many of them by heart.
However, his childhood obsession carried on into his teenaged years. He was given the derogatory name ‘Dragonbrains’ by others his age, and was often beaten into submission by larger kids. By the time he was old enough to join the military, he had long given up on his fantasy of – maybe – meeting a dragon in real life.
While he was in the military, he learned to become a soldier. Nothing special, he blended in among the ranks. He put on muscle and went from a wimp to a stalwart, strong young man. However, he couldn’t wait to retire from the military and find a nice, normal job. Perhaps as a painter or something.
However, things were destined to go a different route. In the last few months of his required stint in the military, he was transferred to a different unit, namely the unit under Shyvana’s command. When he realized he was under the command of a half-dragon, his old obsessions over the draconic kingdom were re-ignited. He stayed on an extra two years in Shyvana’s unit, studying her from afar and, whenever possible to do so without provoking her, asked her questions about her dragonhood.
When he finally did retire from the military, he began doing odd jobs and, in rare cases, hiring himself out as a mercenary in order to pay for his research. Now, he lives in Demacia, his dream to meet a true dragon – on friendly terms, even – possibly coming to fruition.
However, during the Shadow Isles invasion, his dreams were put on hold. Pulled out of retirement, he fought on the frontlines. He made friends and lost friends, and the battle left him scarred, not on the outside, but the inside. He made a personal vow, one to not let something this horrific fall upon Demacia again, regardless of the source.
When the siege was finally over, he stayed signed on to the military. When he heard about the shortage of troops on the border territories of Demacia, he volunteered himself to be re-assigned, and is currently waiting to be designated to a new position in the Demacian military.
Long-term Goals:
-Meet (and possibly befriend) a real dragon
-Further skills as a soldier
-Improve research on dragons
-Possibly befriend Shyvana
Notes:
History with Shyvana has been approved. Shyvana has PMed me with permission for her to feature as a large factor in my biography.
Patches:
'Mastery' of Dragon Behavior/Physiology/Combat reduced to 'Knowledge'
'Combat against Dragons' section added to 'Ability' section
Heavy rework of many elements, including:
-Removing slit from his sword (discussed with Victus; this would make the sword ridiculously expensive as well as very fragile, a complete showpiece)
-Improved details on relationship with Shyvana (discussed with Shyvana)
-Changed Jarvan IV to 'King' and Jarvan III to 'Deceased'
Alright, time to get to work improving James. Look forwards to working to improve him.
