Leo kept running, trying to place the loaf of bread that he just "found" in the bakery into his bag. He wouldn't stop until the baker and his wife stopped chasing him. After some struggle he closed his bag and flung it over his shoulder, dodging into an alley and jumping inside a dumpster, waiting.
10 minutes later, he decided it was safe enough. He climbed out of the dumpster but he slipped and fell, his knee landed on a sharp paving stone. Leo let out a scream followed by weeping. He couldn't move his leg and the pain was burning through it. He cursed himself for being so reckless and slipping. He tried for his bag but he remembered in a snap that he did not have any medical supplies. He grabbed the dumpster and tried to rise, resulting in extreme pain. He screamed again, this time it could be heard for streets away.
"N-now what. Y-you s-stupid little y-yordle!" He said to himself, still weeping.
A young yordle walks alone down the backstreets of Bandle City, hands empty except for the flute he is holding. As with most of his recent visits to the city, nobody had been kind enough to offer food or money for his music. His stomach rumbles faintly at the thought, but it's cut off by a scream from the alley. As if it was a natural instinct, the yordle hurries towards the source of the cry, but when he reaches the alleyway he only peeks his head around, too shy to speak up. In the darkness he can see someone in pain, but it isn't anyone he's seen before. The yordle clutches his flute nervously in both hands and silently walks closer, wanting to help but unable to bring up the courage to speak.
Leo took off his bag and tried to reposition himself to decrease the pain. Every little movement of his bottom area has resulted with extreme pain but he couldn't do anything about it. He bit his lip in an attempt to reduce his weeping. When Leo finally finished he turned around to see a Yordle with a flute behind him. He wasn't sure if it meant trouble. He tried to mask his face.
Instinctively, Teo ducks behind the dumpster near him as he's addressed. After a few moments of deep breathing he nervously sticks out the tip of his nose and speaks.
"U-u-um... m-my name is Teo. Are... a-are you... o-okay?"
Behind the dumpster, the little yordle pulls his hood up over his head, his ears poking out from their holes. He shivers timidly, glancing down at the pouch tied to his side and wondering if he is doing the right thing. In the pouch there are some herbs he'd picked that morning, still in good condition.
Leo sighed. He could hear the shakiness in Teo's voice. He wondered by would the Yordle be so scared like that. He replied, trying to sound more timid himself for that other Yordle's sake.
"N-not really. I think my leg is b-broken. M-my name is..." Leo stopped, he was a bit known throughout the shopkeepers around the place because he didn't just steal, sometimes he simply begged. He faked out his name. "Roy."
Teo lets out a light gasp when he hears about a broken leg. Immediately he scampers out and over to the fallen yordle, getting onto his knees and hovering his hands over Leo's legs. At that moment his mind finally catches up with his body and forces him to pause, looking up nervously at the other yordle.
"D-do... do you mind i-if I check?"
Though the lighting is dim, Teo's clothing is still fairly visible and it's obvious that he isn't from inside the city. His brown garb is ragged, adorned with various plant parts.
"Me? U-uh... n-no, I'm not normally in the city... The f-forest is my home now."
Before inspecting Leo's leg, Teo reaches into the pouch tied to his waist and pulls out a slender root, about the size of a large carrot. He holds it out to the other yordle.
"Here, bite down on this. This c-could hurt a little..."
As soon as the wounded yordle bites down on the root, Teo would gently wrap his hands around the other's leg and use his thumb to apply a small amount of pressure starting at the center of the shin and moving up towards the knee, each time asking, "Does this hurt?"
When Leo understood what Teo meant, he nodded and bit down the root. He then waited for the Yordle to move his hand up. It hurt a lot, but not as much as it supposed to hurt so he shook his head to the sides. When Teo reached his knee, Leo bit the root hard and nodded fast. He felt his tears coming down on his cheeks. The pain burned through him like a thousand suns.
As Leo bit down on the root, sweet juices would leak into his mouth. The juices wouldn't take effect immediately, but soon they'd ease the pain in his leg a little.
Teo furrows his brow, releasing the leg. He'd helped the forest animals recover from similar injuries before, but this was something a bit different.
"Well, i-it's not broken. But you probably shouldn't walk on it... not for a while, at least. You might have fractured something. I-if you want, you can keep chewing on that root. The burdock roots help a lot, e-especially when some of the smaller animals hurt themselves."
Leo nodded. The pain did decrease a bit but it was still intense. When he heard that the leg isn't broken he felt much better. "Oh... That's great. T-thanks for the help.
What are you doing in the city? I guess that's none of my business but it doesn't look like I'll be moving any time soon."
Instinctively, Teo sits up a little and nervously grasps his pendant with one hand, the other going behind his ear as he turns away. The question caught him off guard and made him feel a little guilty, a faint blush showing from under his pale fur.
"O-oh, well... I wanted to save food for the animals, and there isn't much left where I'm staying right now, s-so... I thought maybe I could try coming to the city for food. Normally I don't get anything though, so I don't usually come anymore... a-and I don't have any money..."
He looks down at Leo's leg again, thinking to himself. He couldn't just leave the wounded yordle here, but there weren't any places in town that he could think of to stay.
"You know, R-Roy... I could help you up... and help you walk somewhere instead of sitting here for a while..."
Leo felt himself for a moment. He was a thief, he didn't deserve many things given to him. He wanted to give something back to the other Yordle. He reached to his backpack and took out a loaf of bread. Not the same one he stole but one he begged off a day before. It was still fresh due to the wrappings. He held it to Teo to see.
"H-here... I want to give you this. Its still good, baked yesterday. I-I made sure to keep it safe. You seem hungry yourself, you know...
I don't have any money too either hehe." Leo gave a faint smile to Teo as he offered the loaf.
Teo is taken back by the offer, holding his pendant with both hands now and looking down. It isn't in his nature to accept offers, unless he'd asked first.
"O-oh, no no! I... y-you could probably use it more. It's yours after all..."
Rejecting the offer only made the little yordle feel worse, and his stomach betrays him by rumbling quite noisily. He sighs and takes the bread. A thought comes to mind, though, and he breaks the loaf in half.
"O-okay, how about we split it? I couldn't eat it all anyway..."
Leo nods and takes half of the loaf. He proceeds to take a small jam of jar and a pocket knife from his backpack.
"Sure thing. And don't worry, I can handle myself. I don't have a place to go to other than the normal sack I'm sleeping in, nor do I mean to go back to the orphanage. I guess you can leave me here for a while."
Leo said, placing some strawberry jam on his bread before offering some to Teo.
