Hello, fair people of Maelstrom! It has recently come to my attention that magical items are likely to play a role in our cooperative storytelling. While we never want to use them as a crutch, they can be powerful tools for plot and character development, so keep in mind when designing magic items for introduction into forum canon that they should always be relevant and have an impact on and connection to our divergent world.
Please also consider that the Institute of War likely lays claim to most powerful magical artifacts, and therefore all in-game items are the property of League artificers and not available for independent use outside the Fields of Justice. If you would like to introduce a magical item, please submit the form below with all fields filled to this thread:
Item Name: <Name> Item Type: <Artifact, hextech invention, family heirloom, etc> Item Owner: <Who currently possesses the item.> Description: <Brief physical representation> Functionality: <Comprehensive list of ALL magical and mundane properties> Discovery/Invention: <How this item came to be and how it will come into your possession> History: <Any past events relating the item/its inception> Relevance: <In what way will the inclusion of this item affect the world at large and the characters involved with it.> Approval: Pending.
When you submit:
Your item is pending until approved and included in the catalog. Do not list it as anything but; an admin will edit your post when the item is approved.
Do not expect approval without a complete form. Please iron out all logistics concerning your item before posting.
Please speak OOCly with all potentially involved parties concerning your item before submitting. This is your responsibility.
Take canon history into account. If you are designing a Runeterran artifact, it should tie in smoothly with any established lore.
You may not introduce any powerful magical item into Maelstrom canon without approval on this thread--unless it is tied directly to your OC and already cleared through the Original Character Council.
You will be expected to RP the discovery/invention of your item. These things don't grow on trees, yanno!

MAGICAL ITEMS CATALOG:
Item Name: The Box of Shadows. Item Type: Artifact. Item Owner: Zed, Master of Shadows Description: Looks like a small ornate wooden box, smoke like shadows seem to shift across the surface. Functionality: Each Master of Shadows imprints his own techniques into the box, so that when opened it would reveal the sacred, perfected techniques, to the new master it is passed onto burning the knowledge into the mind of any who open it. However, over the 200 years of not being used, the magic had begun to deteriorate. The minds that had been imprinted in the box slowly began to become almost sentient. Little does Zed or anyone know, it's those voices, from the time when the Kinkou were ruthlessly hunting the Order, that slowly pull at the strings in his mind and those that learn from it. Discovery/Invention: In ages past the Kinkou hunted those in the Order of Shadows relentlessly until all but a handful remained. An idea was devised in order to preserve the knowledge should the Kinkou succeed in eliminating the last of the order. History: It was an idea created by past Shadow Master's when the Kinkou began to fear how the Order of Shadows obliterated the balance between light and dark. They were hunted relentlessly by the Kinkou, and in order to protect the Way of the Shadow a master imprinted all he knew into the box and implored that every Shadow master after him do the same, so that when the time came for the Order of Shadows to rise again came, there would be a way to learn all there was to know about the Shadow Arts. Relevance: Any who open it and are deemed worthy are bestowed knowledge passed down from master to master, giving them knowledge of near perfect shadow techniques. Approval: Accepted
Item Name: Eye(s) of Icathia Item Type: Artifact Item Owner: Currently Bandle City has one, the rest are presumed to still be in Icathia. Description: A perfectly circular lens, made of clear crystal. Functionality: Allows those who gaze through it to see hidden Icathian glyphs, as well as detect objects and spaces that have been 'touched' by the Void. Discovery/Invention: Long, long ago, the Icathians had been presumed to craft great materials to feed their curiosity of the Void. Through a procedure of skillful crystal sculpting and intense magical infusion, they created the Eyes of Icathia to better view traces of the Void, as well as keep their precious inscriptions hidden from the naked eye. History: Many great artifacts were lost when the city vanished with the sands, but there were a few that would not be destroyed by time. Scavengers attempted to come in and steal what remained, but none survived. They only managed to move one such item, one of the Eyes, and over time it was moved towards the Yordle Lands. When they yordles found it, they'd only assumed it to be a bit of junk left behind in the wilderness, and quickly deposited it into Rumble's junkyard. Teemo dug it out one day when he was helping Rumble reorganize the junk piles, and immediately took it to Ezreal for inspection. A few months later he retrieved it and brought it back to Bandle in hopes of using it to better secure his city. Relevance: The eyes detect hidden messages of Icathian origin and reveal Icathian rune meanings to the holder. Peering through them, one can also see faint visible traces of Void energy. Approval: Accepted.
Item Name: The Eye of Shadows Item Type: Artifact Item Owner: Karthus Description: An obsidian sphere which changes color depending on how much positive energy has been absorbed, being white when full reverting back to it's black color when the energy has been converted. Orange magic crackles within, barely visible through the obsidian sphere. Functionality: The Eye of Shadows is, in a sense, a magical capacitor and converter: It allows the user to absorb a portion of all positive-energy magic directed towards them, or simply the ambient positive energy in the area around them by drawing from the lifeforce of the given area. This energy is then converted to negative energy, which can be then stored within the Eye and used to empower spells cast by its wielder. This also serves as Karthus' phylactery, and is heavily enchanted to resist damage. Discovery/Invention: Death forged this for Karthus when he was first reborn. History: The Eye of Shadows was first forged in the planes beyond Life itself, to serve as a weapon and a safeguard for Karthus as he was reanimated. For a time, after the fourth rune war, the cult of necromancers which had worshiped Karthus managed to unbind the Eye from his power and cast him out, using it as a catalyst to fuel their magics. However, under the guise of Dorian, Karthus lead an expedition to their crypt and reclaimed what was rightfully his, destroying the cult in the process. Relevance: I put this here to explain the artifact I've already used ingame on several occasions. Also, it is pretty much character-centric, but it may give other players options in combating Karth. Approval: Approved.
Item Name: Kusanagi Item Type: Kinkou Katana Item Owner: Kennen Description: Golden handle and sheath, with a bright silver blade with rune marks etched into it. Functionality: It's a blade, so it cuts things. Also, it can create powerful gusts of wind in any direction, including tornadoes. The wind gusts can cut weaker materials, but not flesh. It can also calm the natural wind. Discovery/Invention: It was forged in the old Kinkou temple. History: Kusanagi's true power was not realized until a fire threatened the temple. The sword was being used to cut grass and redirect the fire when it let loose a gust of wind, blowing the entire fire out. Afterwards, it was tested and given a place of honor in the temple's armory. When Zed attacked, it was successfully removed from the area, but dropped in wild Ionian territory. Some time later, Lulu came across it in her travels. She took it and brought it back to Bandle City, where Kennen stole it. Relevance: It's a nice addition to Kennen's arsenal, matching his theme. It's a weapon, so it's not going to have much relevance outside of combat. Approval: Accepted
Item Name: Schwarz Wälzer Item Type: Grimoire Item Owner: Gregori Hastur Description: A large black leather bound book with small white runes etched into the binding. Functionality: Filled with thousands of forbidden black magic rituals and incantations. When a powerful witch or Warlock dies with it in their possession, their knowledge is imprinted within the near infinite pages of the book. Discovery/Invention: It came into Gregori's possession by means that he won't share with anyone, not even his wife. A pact with a demon is rumored to be involved. History: Made hundreds of years ago by a dark summoner, he slowly slipped into madness. Fearing his work would be lost, he extracted all magical knowledge he possessed and implanted it within the Grimoire. The process killed him. It has surfaced through-out history, scholars claim it is simply a myth. No such Grimoire exists. Relevance: It is essentially where Gregori has gained the majority of his power. Should anyone come to posses such an item, they would have access to some of the most terrible and darkest magics known to Runeterra. While in Gregori's possession however, it is safe from the clutches of those who would abuse such power. Approval: Accepted
Item Name: Yorick's Shovel Item Type: Family Heirloom Item Owner: Yorick Mori, The Gravedigger Description: Looks like a regular shovel, a bit wider, looks really old. Functionality: Used by Yorick to dig graves to raise an army for the Ruined King, on the Fields of Justice is used to summon ghouls. Ghouls can be summoned off the fields as well. Discovery/Invention: Passed down through generations. Created by one of Yorick's fore fathers. History: The shovel was passed unto Yorick after his father died, and unto he when his father died and so on. The shovel is said to be imbued with the spirit of every forefather who wielded the shovel before. The spirits are said to protect the one who wields it during the long nights in between the tombstones and graves. Relevance: Without the shovel, Yorick can't raise an undead army for the Ruined King and fill his quota. Approval: Accepted
Item Name: Piercing Retribution Item Type: Artifact Description: A holy saber, obviously used by a person of noble blood due to the intricate designs on the hand guard and the blade. The larger designs often depict a man fighting off a great beast. The blade is made of well crafted steel and is very well balanced, making it easier to use and swing. Functionality: The saber is meant to be a piercing weapon, and Piercing Retribution's design grants it the ability to pierce through the heaviest medium armor. However, heavier armor will offer some protection, unless struck in a lighter armored portion. Furthermore, the blade seems to be immune to rust or has been restored and carefully maintained.
Magical Effects: This weapon has been magically enchanted by the first grandmaster's will. By doing so the blade has gathered a rather interesting effect. Upon a successful strike the magical powers reveal one sin or regret that the target has. This sin or regret is only revealed to the wielder of Piercing Retribution. Rudmed uses this magical effect empower his own righteous fury and deliver devastating blows meant to punish his target.
Discovery/Invention: It was forged by a master smith as a weapon for The Final Truth's first grandmaster, a being known as Archon. Before his death he poured his will into the weapon giving it the magical effects listed above. History: Created after the Final Truth was first established to serve a mighty weapon for the Final Truth's first Grandmaster. From there the first Grandmaster blessed by the first grandmaster's will. Rudmed has used it to fight off Void creatures when they invaded the Winter Claw's territory, in which he dealt a critical blow to the Grey Knight. Relevance: This is Rudmed's main weapon, and it acts as his tool for dispensing his ultimate judgement. It will allow him to double check the facts of his investigation, and perhaps give the target's a second chance at redemption. For if a target has not committed a major sin, then they may be spared from retribution. Approval: Pending.

Item Name: Isabelle's Pendant (Possible WIP) Item Type: Family Heirloom Item Owner: Gillam Dunwall Description: A small, seemingly unremarkable golden pendant with a sapphire center. It has the approximate size of a shirt button. Functionality: When Gillam is in a dire situation, the pendant begins to sparkle and creates a protective barrier around him. The barrier protects Gillam from most conventional weapons, common magical weapons, extreme temperatures (this is what saved Gillam's life) and low to medium levels of magic. This power is recharged through the nearby use of magic around the pendant. This, however, causes the pendant to react violently to magic cast directly on Gillam while recharging. Discovery/Invention: This pendant was passed down from Isabelle Dunwall to Gillam Dunwall, and was presented to Isabelle on her wedding day as a gift from her husband, Alexander Dunwall. Alexander, not knowing the pendant contained magical properties, found it on the streets of Demacia. History: Although the origins of the pendant are unknown, it is at least as old as the Third Rune War, and has been in Gillam's possession ever since then. Relevance: Gillam was frozen inside a cave in Freljord. Where he would have normally frozen to death, the pendant, charged excessively from all of the magic used in the previously battle, allowed him to live. The pendant also helped his recovery in the Shadow Isles invasion. Approval: Pending.

Item Name: The Seven Lenses of Insight Item Type: Hextech Invention Item Owner: Master Yi Description: A black helmet with yellow trim, in place of a normal visor lies seven glowing green lenses. A large piece extends from the back as well. (exactly the same as in game and splash art)
Functionality: Allows Yi to see across a broader spectrum (infrared to ultraviolet) than most humans. Additionally, he can see the magical auras of others, zoom in as though they were a telescope or binoculars, and amplify light to allow him to see in darker places, or filter it out to reduce glare. These capabilities allow him to see past many illusions. Since they are attuned to Yi's magical resonance, he merely has to think of what he wants them to do, and they will do it. Others can use them, but they are not as effective and cannot be controlled with mere thought.
Discovery/Invention: Heimerdinger invented the Seven Lenses and gifted them to Yi slightly before the Ionia/Noxus war.
History: The Seven Lenses saw their first use by Yi in the Ionia/Noxus war. They served him well and continue to serve in battle to this day.
Relevance: The Seven Lenses greatly improve Yi's visual acuity which can help in numerous situations.

Description: a slightly curved dagger tapering to a point, the blade roughly a foot in length and another six inches for the handle. Engraved upon the blade are the command words that can only be seen by true devotees recognized by the Avatar of the Moon.
Functionality: A long lost relic of ancient Lunari origin, these enchanted daggers were the ceremonial and secondary weapons of the Lunar Temple Guards. The blade does not function during the days of the new moon or during lunar eclipses.
Common Power: The blade can be attuned to the location of the Vardos Zarovia, by means of divination of their goddess statue.
Lesser Power: (To be role played gained) An initiate to the Lunari may use the power of the blade to become invisible for up five to thirty minutes, depending upon the cycles of the moon, anytime between sunset and sunrise, activated by a command word that is whispered. The invisibility is broken upon attacking, uttering another command word or losing the blade.
Greater Power (To be role played gained) A true disciple of the Lunari, one who counts herself among the Avatar’s chosen, may teleport instantly to anywhere within any visual distance touched by moonlight, up to five times a night. This ability is activated by a command word that is whispered.
Discovery/Invention: This dagger is an heirloom in Caerys’s family, passing down one Zarovian dervish mother to their daughter, until it came into the hands of Caerys before she left for Noxus and her subsequent capture. Kept as a trophy by the amoral Sylvia Monteclaire during her captivity, the dagger would be reclaimed by Caerys upon her freedom.
History: The Vardos Zarovia are an ancient people who have wandered not only through the land but through time, their oral history transforming their tales into distant myths and legends, of a distant time of pyramids and worship of the sun, moon and heavens. This dagger is a keepsake of that time.
