March 25th
Skarner squeezed through the hallways of the Institute of War, his footsteps making a resounding crack on the stone as he made his way. People who were in Skarner's path it found another route to their destination as they couldn't get past him and Skarner could not turn easily. It was frustrating and reiterated why he was coming here.
As he made his way into the Stewards Wing, things got better and Skarner was hopeful. The hallway was wide enough that Skarner wasn't controlling the hallway traffic and some of doors appeared larger....maybe Ethan's door was large enough to let him in... Skarner had no idea which office belonged to the steward's and thus gently stopped a Yordle woman with claw barring her way.
"Excuse me, but I need to find the Steward Summoner Ethan Ramseyt. Which office is his?" Skarner asked politely.
The yordle looked astounded. "OH MY!!!! YOU'RE TALKING TO ME?!?! OH MY!!! I am SUCH a HUGE fan of your work on the fields and I-" She was talking to the air over Skarner's head.
"Miss, I just need-" Skarner said, hoping to cut her off and direct her focus.
"-really wish I could summon you more often! I think we-"
"Just give me directions to the office, please."
"-would make a great team in middle lane!-"
"NOW!" Skarner snapped, making a few other summoners nearby jump back. The Yordle woman's hair almost appeared to flatten a bit in fear.
She pointed down a hallway. "End of that hallway. Sorry to bother you, Mister Skarner."
"Thank you, miss. I wish you luck in your next match." Skarner said politely. He regretted losing his temper like that.
The office in question proved to be another challenge. The doorway was not wide enough. With a heavy sigh, Skarner knocked as gently as he could on the doorway. He still managed to leave visible marks on the door.

Ethan had heard the Brackern coming long before he had placed a single claw upon the door, though still he waited for the Vanguard to finish knocking before he opened the door. His entirely impassive expression was directed downwards at the beast whose eyes only barely came up to his waist. Thankfully, the door opened inward, Ethan reflected, taking a few steps back to stop the noble creature craning his neck unnecessarily.
"Greetings, Crystal Vanguard. Shall we take a walk? I suspect we have something of import to discuss." Ethan politely asked, nodding down the hallways as he did so. He didn't feel as though he needed an answer to begin collecting his usual supplies. Pen, paper, a small bundle of paperwork in case he was called away to do something else.
With that in his possession, he stepped out through the door and tapped the first lock with his hextech key, casting a spell upon the door to lock it a second time before fishing out a mechanical key as well and locking the door a third time. The keys vanished into Ethan's robes as he held out a hand to the Brackern, motioning down the hall. "Now, what is it you'd like to talk about, Vanguard?" Ethan asked, respect very obvious in his voice. He had always been a fan of Skarner, summoning him back when that was something he found himself with the time to do. His wisdom was always an inspiration, during his years as a bronze and silver summoner.

Skarner gave Ethan a nod as the summoner gathered his strange tools. Objects used to preserve information...seemed rather quaint to the crystalline being. His people had no need for such things, given their lifestyle and unique tie to the Arachia. However, Ethan had the necessary foresight to do his job, as seen in his steps to make sure the Brackern was comfortable dealing with him by stepping back from Skarner when speaking to him. It was also very kind of Ethan to offer to walk with Skarner as opposed to sit in his office and make Skarner force himself inside.
Good signs that might yield for good things for himself in the future.
Skarner thought a moment before speaking as he skittered down the halls to find a more open area for them to speak and not congest the traffic.
"Steward Summoner Ethan Ramseyt, I need to speak about assistance with dealing with your kind. Your kind's customs still baffle me. Your people insist on having your 'papers' filled out. Your hallways are too narrow for me to traverse without disrupting this Institute of War's business. Many of your people assume I can find my way to their office, sometimes with only vague directions, and ask for me to arrive at specific times using some manner of numbers that make no sense to me. I am also given stacks of paper bound in cowhide that I am told are about this world's history and culture to occupy and educate myself, but I have no way to read them.
I need someone to do these things your people take for granted. Someone I can trust. Other champions get aid from their nations, but I am alone. I have no means to entice one of your people to aid me either as I have none of these small disks of metal that your kind prize so highly. I am told you are the human I must speak with to aid me in this."
Skarner stopped for a moment, glancing around an intersection, paying no mind to the gawkers.
"Steward Summoner Ethan Ramseyt....I have never been in this section of your Institute of War....Which way do you suggest?"

Ethan walked and listened at once, steps falling ahead of the crystal behemoth's own, though less frequently. A wave of his hand chose a direction for them to head in, toward the back of the building. Luckily, the Brackern was long-winded, so they were already most of the way to the place Ethan had wanted to bring Skarner.
"As much as I would love to volunteer myself for such a position, I cannot. I am a very busy man, however..." Ethan began, sauntering ahead of Skarner to push open the massive double doors that lead to the Gardens. They were largely natural, cultivated only insofar as to place a few of the more beautiful, exotic specimens from around the world here. It was tended to by the summoners, though there was no particular schedule that kept them in line. Many of them did so of their own accord, in their down time, as so many of them used the gardens to relax when not swamped.
More importantly, it was huge, like most of the Institute was, lit by individual floating stones that glowed in a soft blue. More than enough room to converse with such a large creature in peace, as well as being less likely to have swarms of people to stare at the mobile gemstone. "I can have an aide prepared for you, if you would like it. Perhaps they will be able to aid you in understanding human culture better. In fact, I believe I already have someone in mind for the position."
As they entered a small clearing, Ethan sat down in the midst of tall grasses and wildflowers, his blonde hair barely showing through the greenery as his eyes closed. He spoke anyway, despite his almost meditative state. "I trust you would not object to such an arrangement?"

Skarner was a bit amused by the League's little garden in their Institute of War. Nature meant to appear as it would in a Pre-Rune War Era, but complete with floating beacons of magical light. The corruption tucked away and buried under a rug. Arrogant and a symbol of the League's dependence on an energy source that kept his people entombed.
Skarner remained standing as Ethan sat, naturally comfortable in such a stance and it allowed him to look Ethan in the eye as they talked.
"That should work, Steward Summoner Ethan Ramseyt. I have one condition before you assign this aide to me. I talk to them first and determine if they are acceptable." Skarner said calmly. 'already have someone in mind for the position'? Interesting.
"If you have time there is one other issue I would like to discuss." Skarner stated, his claws clicking a bit. This was a more personal topic.

"I will be sure that you two speak beforehand. I would not simply assign you someone without giving you a chance to acquaint yourself." Ethan said, giving the tiniest of nods. He had always loved the gardens, known to spend countless hours in his earlier, less busy years in quiet, contemplative meditation. Of course, he could not bring himself to try tending the flowers, his thumb a metaphorical black to the required green that seemed all but necessary for the task.
"What was it you wished to speak about, Vanguard?" He finished, opening one eye to meet the impressive creature's gaze, a respectful and relaxed smile covering his features.

"I was told your kind would aid me in awakening my own, but none of come to speak to me about my problem. All those who came to me seek is more power. My goal is slipping away from me, largely in part to the loss of the imprisoned champions and Noxus's abandonment of your people's alliance. The more time that passes on the more likely rune magic will be abused once more and thus tighten the chains on my people. Too much of it and I will be forced back myself. I ..." Skarner stopped here. He clicked his claws a bit uncomfortably. "I need help."

"Skarner, there has been almost no spare time where our organization has not worked to clean the world we know." Ethan explained, giving the brackern a knowing look. "Recently, we have been very busy. The Void's incursions into the Freljord, our own compromised security and Noxus leaving our fold, each of these events have sent all of our summoners into a frantic state, attempting to solve each of these issues."
His brow furrowed and his gaze dropped to the ground, pausing a moment to think about the breadth of the events that had taken place, as far back as the freeing of the imprisoned champions. Despicable, certainly, but even the League was not infallible.
"With that said, however, we are completely aware of the dangers of Rune Magic. Its use threatens more than your race, more than simply the way of life you had. It threatens Runeterra itself. It will not simply send your race under the ground, it will tear the world apart at the seams." Ethan looked back up to the hulking, animate crystal and spoke with conviction.
"We are here to help you. We hope that you too are here to help us. You, and by extension, your kind, know things about our world that we could never understand on such an elemental level. Help us help you, Skarner."

The brackern nodded, understanding the League had other duties besides that to his people.
"Steward Summoner Ethan Ramseyt, my terms for aiding your kind in the Institute of War were clear. I fight for your people, and they aid me in awakening mine with certain conditions. I am not willing to risk my life through your people's magical tests, for if I fall, I trust NONE to protect my people. I will not allow your people to take non-human artifacts from Odyn Valley without my clearance. So far, all that have come to me have asked for me to do these things. I would do this myself, but I have no knowledge of your rune magics and cannot learn them, because it will force me back into hibernation and ruin my kind's chances at revival." Skarner paused a moment to calm himself as his tone became sharper as he would like to be. There was no need to be aggresive towards this human. The creature was only trying its job.
"What can I do when the cause of my kind's condition is a magic that will cause me to suffer the same fate if I am exposed to more of it? Who can I trust if so many are only interested in themselves? Who among your kind care for my people unless it is to gain some manner of power over someone else? Your race is a greedy one. It was your race's greed over land and control that caused my people to be buried." Skarner stated in a non-accusatory tone.
"I need someone who knows your people to guide me towards those who can aid me and that I can trust. Can your assistant do that, or must I place my trust in you?"

Ethan's posture loosened slightly, a look of both confusion and thought flashing across his face before departing. He could understand the brackern's plight, their goals had been considerably wide-spread since Skarner's induction to their ranks. Still, he had always thought Skarner to be at least a little bit older than most. Older, wiser, and much more immune to the flow of time than humans, most of whom were relatively short-lived. Ethan let out the tiniest of sighs.
"Skarner, it has been many years since you and your kind were driven under the earth. I will not ask for your trust, as much as I wish to have it. You are, to a degree, correct, however. Humans have been known to be terribly cruel, selfish to a degree that confuses and amazes me..." Ethan began, raising his hand and giving a flick of his wrist, a shimmering golden orb encompassing the brackern, a very common summoner spell, Barrier, the only summoner spell that Ethan had ever truly liked. "We do not allow Rune Magic anymore. This, this type of magic, this is what we allow." The magic faded as Ethan's hand closed once more.
"I sense that, despite having been awakened for some time, you have seen so little done for you and for your race. I implore you, please, understand that this is not done to undercut the significance of your kind or your noble goal. There are some humans that still to this day, wish for nothing but their own gain, and truly I cannot say they will ever not exist, for I do not possess that knowledge. Humans are volatile, and despite the fact that I am one... I cannot even come near the claim of understanding all of them." Ethan chuckled softly and looked out to a nearby patch of delicate sky colored flowers. "But we are not all that way. I wish to help you, truly, but I have many, many obligations."
"No one is more aware of the situation surrounding your race's exodus and I can think of no one better than you to offer information into what precisely caused you to awaken, as well as what made your kind sink initially." Ethan furrowed his brow and then alighted immediately, snapping his fingers. "I think... I think I've just come up with an idea. But it will take some time. It is... Complex magic, and I am not even certain if it will function as I think it may."

Skarner didn't show much reaction to the Barrier, having been exposed to it many times on the fields. He knew many of Ethan's words had merit, but he had stopped many human advances into Odyn Valley. He had watched his people bury themselves due to human magics. And in this era, the world seemed to be on the edge of disaster due to humans.
However, further debate was pointless. Skarner had more important matters to settle today than to debate the power of the League or the arrogance of humans.
"Steward Summoner Ethan Ramseyt, I need to know the risk of such magic before agreeing to any such thing. I will not end my life for my people if that leaves NONE who would see them awakened. I also cannot afford to be weakened for the same reasons."

"And that's certainly something we'll be keeping track of, Vanguard. Your people are old and wise, the Institute would be foolish to risk their well-being, when it's possible they could have the knowledge and experience to remedy this wounded world..." Ethan mused, giving a tiny smile as his fingers passed through the grass at his feet.
"Tomorrow, when the sun is at its highest point in the sky, would you mind returning here? I would fetch your assistant now but I find myself shorter and shorter on time recently." Ethan said, his gaze once more locking with Skarner's before he continued. "When I have more details on the procedure between you and I, I will be certain to send you word. Is this acceptable?"

"I will await your word, Steward Summoner Ethan Ramseyt. And I have hope that this assistant serves as I need. I place faith in you to judge its true worth." Skarner said.
"Is there anything you require from me or shall I take my leave, Steward Summoner Ethan Ramseyt?"
