The forests around the Institute were disappointing, to say the least. The canopy of the trees was scant at the very best, and the upper branches where Nidalee was so used to leaping and prowling were too flimsy to hold much more than a bird. Even the lower branches of the trees weren't worth her time. The only ones sturdy enough to prowl through were located just a few feet above the ground, where they were all but effective for her needs.
So the huntress resigned herself to stalking along the ground made moist with rotting leaves and recent weather. Unlike the jungle where the canopy caught most of the rain and the brush below drank whatever moisture got through, the northern lands had such horrid conditions. As her paws sloshed across the leaves Nidalee's tail trailed between her legs, cast and defeated. She was a Kumungu huntress, she was unused to this part of the world and as such she found herself broadcasting her presence with every wet step.
Perhaps instead she should lay a trap and work an ambush, but she doubted there was even much prey so close to the Institute of War as she was . . .

While the forests around the Institute were unremarkable, they did possess a myriad of flora that could prove useful as ingredients for his next batch of potions. All that he had with him was his spellbook, a walking staff, a knapsack to hold some rations and his notes, and the robes that were given to him to signify his status as a Junior Summoner. He probably should have thought against going alone, but he assumed that simple reagent gathering wouldn't be too dangerous as long as he didn't wander off too far. Spotting a fallen log, he took the time to set aside his gear and rest his weary legs for a moment.

Hunting in these grounds was dreadfully dull, so when one of Nidalee's signal traps went off her ears immediately perked. It was a simple device, a small wire traced across what looked like a decent path. When the wire was tugged, either by tripping or being stepped on, it compressed a bag of air, much akin to a waterskin, blowing the air through a thin piece of wood carved to create a whistle that replicated a stereotypical bird call. Nidalee could identify the difference between the signal and an actual bird, allowing her to locate nearby prey as they wandered.
As she slowly slunk toward the signal, however, she found herself disappointed to see the purple and gold that signified a summoner's robes. Though the real question was what a summoner, so valuable as they were to this 'civilized' world, was doing wandering alone through the forest. Nidalee decided to make her presence known, the cougar stepping from a bush as her feline eyes stared, watching the summoner for a long moment.

As he was writing down something on his journal, he was unprepared for the presence of a beast's appearance in these woods. He jolted up off of his seat and brandished a wooden staff that he held at his hand. Seconds later, he began to comprehend as to why the beast hasn't attacked him yet. The cougar was a familiar sight to his eyes, but he was still defensive about himself, staring back at the creature. Assuming it had no method of verbal communication with the human tongue, he pulled his hood down and slowly reached an arm out towards it. He held out an open palm towards the cougar as a gesture that he didn't wish for any trouble, backing away slowly while keeping his gaze locked upon hers.
Time would pass unless one or other attempted an action.

Nidalee watched with amusement as the summoner seemed utterly petrified by her presence. There was a long moment where she allowed the summoner to maintain his guard, a long moment as she sat on her haunches with her sharp feline gaze locked on the man. Finally she stood up and stretched her forepaws forward, much as a cat did after a nap, raising her tail into the air lazily.
The tension was still thick, of course, but she took a single step forward before shifting forms. The transformation was abrupt and indescribable, so quick it happened. "I do not see summoners this far outside that often. Usually your lot are hold up with your magic and your books, what business do you have in the wilds?" It wasn't the Kumungu, but Nidalee still couldn't help herself feeling protective over the forested area.

Mortimer took a moment to calm down and stared at the woman that stood in place of the animal. "I'm seeking to find several flora that I could use in brewing some new potions from recipes I've obtained. It's difficult trying to locate each reagent on my list, but I'm sure this forest has -something- that I could use. Although, I feel as if I'm trespassing. Who are you, if I may ask?"

Nidalee watched the man talk. She understood a little of what he was saying. Reagents and other alchemical terms were strange to her, but she knew plenty about herbal remedies, about foliage and what traits different plants had. Much of it came from experience, some from her parents, some from her adopted family. But of course aside from creating a herbal paste to apply to an injury, the most brewing Nidalee did with foliage was tea or soup.
She raised a thin eyebrow at the man and laughed. "If you have to look for something then chances are you are trespassing. Nature provides for its inhabitants, and they know where to get those provisions. Like how you would know where to find anything in your own home,"
she explained, matter-of-factly as if she were speaking to a child. "I am called Nidalee, and who are you to ask?"[/blockquote]

"I am Mortimer. Mortimer Locard of the Institute. I'm only a junior summoner, but I vow to become a full-fledged one someday to further my knowledge of magic. I digress, I've never seen the Huntress herself in person. Only heard stories from recent matches." The man explained as he sat back down upon the log that he used as his temporary seat.
"I've never known that these woods were home to you. Is there anything else I should be cautious of?" He asked, curious as to what may lie within the confines of this forest.

Nidalee watched the man and listened with feigned interest. She would assume that all those who take the time to enroll and become a junior summoner were hoping to become a summoner, though the hearts of men were still a mystery to her. She'd been away from them for far too long to truly understand them as she might have growing up in so-called civilization.
"These woods are as much home to me as the bed they leave for me in the Institute. I prefer the Kumungu Jungle, but they insist I visit now and then outside of matches. This is as close to my jungle as I can find in these lands." She paused for a moment, hand falling to her hip. "As for what you should expect, well, there are other hunters aside from me in the League, and some of them are far more savage."

"Other hunters?" Mortimer inquired with a hint of concern. He wasn't sure of what lurked in these forests, but he was also genuinely curious. The Huntress was probably his closest link to the wild forest, and he wanted to reap as much benefit as possible from her knowledge.
He had a plethora of questions that he wanted to follow up with, but he decided to see what she has to say about his first question.

Nidalee shifted her weight from one leg to another, pivoting her hips as she laughed. "You are a junior summoner and yet you haven't made yourself familiar with the roster?" the huntress shook her head, her ponytail swishing from side to side almost like a tail. "You have much to learn, little mouse, and I'm not the one to teach you these things. It's the way of the wild, if you don't learn and adapt then you get eaten."
