((Semi-open because you'd have to be a summoner to be here, and it's six years before current Maelstrom canon - a lot of characters would barely be teenagers in this timeline.))
September 9th, 17 CLE
Jay stood in front of the Arcanum Majoris, utterly lost.
It was a spectacular start, considering. Not even a year ago, he couldn't stand near a techmaturgical device without it grinding to a halt. Now, he was actually invited to study at the Arcanum. But that didn't change his mood at all.
He was nearly twice the age of some of the other beginning summoners he'd talked to - and half as experienced in normal magic, let alone summoning magic. And now that he was lost, he couldn't learn to be as good as them either. With a sigh, he sat on the stairs in front of the doors of the Institute, staring at his gauntlet idly. It had gotten him this far...he just hoped this wasn't where the line ended.

The path was quiet. It had been filled with students and adepts minutes before, traveling to and from the Arcanum Majoris. Kourelan chose this time of day to run his errands for just this reason. Most students would be in lectures and out of his way. Thus the steps were all but empty when he reached them. He sighed, and couldn't help but notice the figure sitting on the steps.
The old man tucked his small paper wrapped package into his robe and took to the steps. This young student was obviously new. They had never met, but Kourelan recognized him by the device he held. More than held, the schematics for the gauntlet he boy wore had passed across the Wardens desk days before.
Curious.
"Jay McIna. What are you doing?", Kourelan asked with a rasied brow as came forward and regarded him will dull blue eyes.

Jay looked up at the senior summoner and jumped up to attention, nearly sliding off the staircase as he caught his balance. "S-sorry, sir. Got lost looking for the classes. Sorry, sorry sorry. Uh...I don't believe we've met." He grinned slightly and rubbed his head a bit, looking up and down at his superior.

"No. We haven't. I have however seen your work." Kourelan stopped on the step below him. His expression the usual mix of serious intent and a slight scowl, he continued. "That gauntlet is an impressive invention for one so young. I understand you are an aspiring artificer. My name is Kourelan Empherlin and I am Warden of the Summoners Vault. You'll be spending some time there soon enough." Kourelan started to walk towards the Arcanum entrance and called back. "Come with me, we'll find your class."

Jay gave him a small bow. "Thank you very much, sir Kourelan. I couldn't have done it without the Institute backing me up, though." He quickly followed behind the higher-up summoner and kept a steady pace behind him. "So, uh...what have you heard about my gauntlet?" He was curious as to how his crutch had caught the attention of someone who obviously worked high up in the Institute.

"I have seen the details. Mana repository, casting aid, negtron lining. An ingenious workaround to your condition. Solid design, low risk." He paused at the top of the stairs and added gravely, "All unknown or particularly unique items must be identified before being admitted for use in the Arcanum. We don't let anything too malicious pass through these doors. Especially not the ones we help to fund." He said with a sarcastic smile, entering the Arcanum and heading down the hallway towards the closest hub of the schools corridors. "I do have to caution you Jay, not to use your unique talent for absorption on the other students, I'm sure you understand. I mean that regardless of their impertinence. You will likely encounter some impetuous younger students. Now... what class did you say it was?" He stopped in the middle of the large hall, and turned halfway toward facing Jay.

As the two would walk down the halls, the sound of an off key song filled the halls
"~And now my bonney lass is gone~, ~She took me for my worth and sum~ ~And left me standing in the bar~ ~With me old black bottle of rum~"
Jacob then rounded the corners and spotted the pair walking. The man was obviously drunk from celebrating his graduation from the Arcanum. A look of recognition followed by a happy smile hit him as he recognized Kourelan.
"Summoner Kourelan!" he yelled as he staggered over to the old man. "What a fine day it is indeed." he said with great elation. A opened flask was in his hand, full of something that smelled most foul to someone not from Bilgewater.
"Who is our new friend here?" he asked his teacher. He stumbled over too look at Jay, inspecting him as a man would look at a piece of art. "He's a little on the smaller side if you ask me."

((Jacob, put a link to your profile on your account.))
Jacobs comment about Jay's age went unmentioned as Kourelan addressed him before Jay had time to respond. "One graduates, another begins... Still celebrating your victory I see Mr. Cervantes. This mans name is Jay McIna, and now that you are leaving this is your only chance to corrupt him. Do try not to give him a horrible impression of our graduates." he said sarcastically.
Kourelan crossed his arms and waited for Jacob and Jay to speak.

Jay gave Kourelan a small nod. "I wouldn't do that. I'm not going to throw away a second chance on a fight, y'know?" He was about to tell Kourelan where his class was when Jacob entered in. He looked at the Bilgewater summoner with a look of slight distaste. "Uh...pleasure, Mr. Cervantes. Er..." With a small gag that he managed to keep down and a paling of his features, Jay took in a momentary whiff of Jacob's liquor.
"...recent graduate?" He covered his mouth with his gauntleted hand, muffling his voice slightly as he watched the antics. "Well...that's good on you..." He was still a bit off-put about the comment on his size. He wasn't that small...was he? Shaking his head clear, though, he turned to Kourelan. "It was just beginner's summoning. Thank you, sir."

"Corrupt him? You wound me with your words Sir." he said, giving the dour old man a happy smile. He took another drink from his flask. "Besides, I think it's nice for Mr. McIna to see that us summoners are just regular people. People tend to forget that just because of our abilities."
"Beginners summoning eh? Ah, that takes me back. Lead the way Sir!" he told Kourelan.

"Yes. Right this way." Kourelan took the east corridor towards the summoning rooms designated for initiate training. The class would be there, regardless of the assigned lecturer. He a bit softly to Jacob as the went. "A late congratulations to you Jacob. Have you really considered what your path is from here?" The hallway wasn't terribly long but they had a few moments before they arrived.

With a polite bow and a smile, Jay thanked Kourelan. "Thank you so much, sir. And you too...I guess...Jacob." With a quick motion, he brushed his hair out of his face and gave them a slightly wider smile. "I promise, I won't stop until I'm the best Summoner there is!" He then gave them a short wave as he made it inside the classroom.
The dark, relatively barren classroom was only illuminated above the podium of the teacher, casting their far-off figure in a haunting blue light. The teacher hadn't started yet, apparently, so he took a seat near the back, barely making out the shapes of his fellow students in the darkness.

Jacob took another swig form his flask before storing it in one of the pockets n his robes.
"Thanks Kourelan, a late thanks is better than none."
He flowed him as the pair walked the halls.
"As for the future, I have given it some thought. Bilgewater isn't the best place the world for learning the magic arts, I know first hand." he explained. "I have some ideas to help people like me there, those that want to learn more than fishing or sailing."

Kourelan stepped to the side of the hall so that others could pass, the door to beginners summoning closed beside them.
"I had a feeling you would be spending more time in Bildgewater. They could use more examples like yourself. No doubt talent is being wasted scrubbing decks or drowning in bars that you might dredge up and make some use out of. On that note I have a small request."
He took from inside his coat a metal card with his name and address on it, and held it out.
"Bildgewater is a trading hub. All manner of things pass through, and I should be surprised if a few of those things aren't items the Institute would rather possess. A lot of items once though lost have changed hands or resurfaced in Bildgewater, and I would like you to keep an eye out for them. Any vendors you hear of or back room trading, even rumors would be appreciated."
He stopped and raised a pointed finger towards Jacobs head.
"I am not asking you to get into trouble. Just information and you will be paid. What do you say?"
Kourelan waited, both hoping that the young man would agree, and that he wouldn't later go sticking his nose into anything too risky.
Post by Jacob Cervantes on Oct 2, 2013 17:29:54 GMT -5
Jacob accepted the card the older man handed him. A playful expression crossed his face as the old man explained his intention. It was true that many rare items would pop up in Bilgewater under new ownership. Pirates were a greedy lot, always looking for valuable things to sell...or use.
"Why Kourelan," Jacob said in a coy voice "If I didn't know any better, I would think you are asking me to spy on my fellow Bilgewaterians for gold..."
As much as Jacob loved his home, he knew it was hardly the safest and most civilized place in Valoran, and if some of the less favourable characters got their hands on something powerful, it could spell trouble for Bilgewater.
"Ah, don't worry your beard off Kourelan, I'll help you out. It's not too difficult to find something in Bilgewater if you know the right places to look."
Which he did happen to know. He owed the black markets for finding most of the books he used to study with in his youth.
