Naiyu watched carefully as Jacob displayed his skills, a small, light frown on her small face. What Jacob had said was still tumbling about in her mind. Was she really that behind, that only knowing one 'exclusive to her' spell was strange? If she thought about it, she'd been so focused, so desperate to leave her home and join the institute, she didn't focus much on anything but the very necessities. As she'd told him, her healing only developed out of need for sustaining herself collecting experiment ingredients. Thinking more, even the Champions of the League had, at the very least, four skills at their disposal while being controlled. Maybe she hadn't been as attentive as she should have been...
Jacob's question roused the girl slowly. "...I..." The words fumbled on her lips. Just what should she learn? She had her healing, which made her some form of...supporter? A protection-oriented Summoner? But she wanted more than that...healing was as fine and well, but what if she needed to defend against an attacker? Healing the damage is fine...but if she could avoid the damage all together...
"...Maybe..." She began, her fingers clutching tightly into her robes, "...maybe a...wall or...shield of...s-some sort?...I suppose...s-since I'm this type of...Summoner...I m-might as well keep going...?"

"A shield huh? Hmmm.. possible, yes. But rather simple if you ask me. Why not try a shied that can also harm? When a shield of magic breaks, there is a chaotic surge of energy given off. That energy can be harnessed into force, based on what broke it."
Jacob then conjured two minions from the field. all summoners knew basic minion summoning. "Now, try to do that on these minions." he instructed her. She had the ability to cast spells well, but this wasn't basic learning. She had to learn to control magic beyond basic spell casting.
"Create a barrier to protect the friendly minion from the other. But also make its so the barrier will damage the enemy when it expires." He may of been over simplifying it, but she would have to learn on her own. He could only guide her.

"U-uhm...right..."
With a prudent glance at her hands, Naiyu closed her eyes and focused her attention on one of the minions. She was to make a shield, but a shield that also inflicted damage when broken?...of course it was plausible, but was she capable of it?...
To begin with, she recalled her simple Barrier Summoner spell. Straightforward enough, a plain shield that protected for a bit of damage. But that wouldn't be enough. It had to damage...would ignite work? No, damage over time upon breaking wouldn't really 'suite' her. As she mulled over her thoughts, she subconsciously went through the list of known shield types she'd witnessed on the Fields of Justice. There were many different types already, varying from speeding up allies, to helping deal extra damage, to healing the person that cast the shield in the first place. All seemed very attractive possibilities...
But they were already done. If she were to try and replicate them, it would probably be a lackluster imitation that did less than desired, compared to them.
Naiyu thought hard, piercing her lip with her teeth as she did. Perhaps it would be better to adjust it to her needs...if she were to need a shield, obviously she would be under attack. If this person were up close, or whaling at her unabashed, that would most likely be physical damage...if they were casting and attempting to burst her into submission, that would be magical...a different function for the two would be ideal for Naiyu. And in both situations, a means to buy time to escape or retaliate would be valuable as well.
With a slightly nervous flick of her wrists, the Summoner closed her eyes. Slowly a score of soft and shimmering golden butterflies made their way around a single minion, forming a barrier around it much like the natural Barrier spell. As the other minion struck the shield and dealt sufficient damage, it dispersed, appearing to deal a bit of backlash damage and stunning the offender for a moment.
Naiyu glanced towards her Teacher, just a bit anxious as to the results. "Is...is that good?..."

Jacob watched as Naiyu mulled over her spell. Spell theory was fairly simple, it was weaving them together into a form that worked which was complicated. He had spent a long time refining his liquid blade spell. To make an object flow like a liquid while still retaining its original properties was certainly difficult.
He wasnt expecting anything to amazing, but if she could do this, it would show basic comprehension of spell crafting. Which made him genuinely surprised when she pulled it off quite nicely. The spell did exactly what he had described. He noted that her magic took the form of butterflies.
He clapped his hands together in excitement. "Lovely work there lass, especially for a first try. Mind you, trying to cast it on something much bigger will take much more mana and skill, but you have the base down quite nicely."
He dismissed the other minion before circling around to face her. "Do butterflies have any significance to you? As I said before, magic is a representation of who we are."

The tension eased visibly from the girl's frame at the praise, a radiant smile spreading across her previously pierced lips. Her hands lowered and she sighed, breathing in relief and freeing her chest from the vice grip that nervous anticipation had coiled around her. It wasn't fairly complicated, but it was still a gamble with the unknown depths of whatever talent she had for this.
As the minion disappeared and Jacob posed his question to her, she fell into a thoughtful silence. She had pondered it before, a few times in the pits of her deplorable childhood in the wee hours of the night. Already Naiyu had surmised that the golden tint now ruling the once chocolate pools of her eyes were caused by her magic, but the butterflies...
"...I think..." the silver haired woman began, "...maybe...because butterflies are...so free...so magical already...they can go a-almost everywhere they want...they're never held down...they flutter and shine so beautifully no matter what...they come from such a...humble beginning and then they just...take that all and transform themselves for the better..."
As she spoke small rivulets of tears prickled the sides of her face, shimmering as the fell silently to the floor. Her voice didn't crack, seemingly unaware she was crying just trying to explain her adoration for the creatures. "...I...I want to be like that...I want to...take my negatives, a-and...I want to transform...I want to be confident and b-brilliant to everyone...to be surrounded, b-by...by warmth and h-happiness, and...l-love..."
Finally bringing her gaze to Jacob's she didn't look sad at her predicament, or angry at the past she was given. She seemed...oddly serene, a gleam of silent determination behind her tear touched eyes. "...I want to fly...like butterflies do..."

Jacob watched Naiyu express her feelings, a thick emotional sadness overcame him. She was small compared to him, almost two feet on her. So small, so delicate...yet so strong. She had pain in her. Pain much greater than his, but he would be damned if he would let her suffer alone with it. He walked over to her and gave her a warm embrace. Her head would come to halfway up his chest.
"We all endure the pain of life." he told her. "Growing past it is what makes us strong. And you are strong. You are at one of the best schools in this world, learning to become one of the people to protect it. Under one of the best damn teachers you could have." He chuckled at that last part. "And one day you will be able to fly and when you do, everyone will want to join you."

Jacob's words made the small Summoner smile, a light sputter leaving her as she let the emotion seep through, if only a little. Her shoulders shook for a moment and she sniffed sharply, brushing her fingers over her eyes to will away the tears she finally noticed before returning the embrace to her Teacher, her arms giving a tiny squeeze of thankfulness around him. These were the few times she'd receive the lovely things known as hugs; it made her heart ache with a sharp sadness and a filling gratefulness. She didn't know them in her early years, but maybe now...if she tried hard enough, and kept at it like this, things would get better...
"Thank you..." Naiyu managed through the fabric of Jacob's robes. "...I kn-know I'm not the best r-right now, but...I-I'll work hard, I...I promise...s-so...thank you...for..being here, for me..."
With that she slowly unraveled her arms from him and swept away the last of her tears. She fixed up her robes and looked towards Jacob, a joyous smile on her face. "I'll keep...trying..."

"That's all I ask of you, do your best." he told her with a smile. "And make sure I do mine. If I don't give you my all, then I am only doing you a disservice."
"Well then, I think we've made good progress today. What do you say we get some food to celebrating a new partnership?"

Naiyu scratched her fingers through her hair, thinking for a moment on his question. She opened her mouth to politely turn it down, but the sudden barking grumble of her stomach silence her and turned her face an embarrassed tint of pink. With a tiny smile she changed her reply, nodding her head towards him.
