May 21st, 23 CLE, immediately following the events of This Mortal Coil
The Howling Marshes were anything but silent. Putrid as they may be, the marsh itself was still teeming with life. Cicadas and other insects chirped to their own unseen rhythm, and swamp birds sang their songs amongst the trees. That is, save for one most secluded part of the marsh, a place which the native animals knew very well to avoid: The newly-reconstructed Temple of Undeath, a place where no creature who wished to retain it's life came near. Thus, a small pocket of silence surrounded the temple itself, the deathly magic seeping from that unholy place walling it not only from intruders but also from the creatures of the forest and their cacophony.
This silence was abruptly broken as a shadowy portal opened within the temple's depths before spiting out a maelstrom of white dust, which slowly formed a ring about Karthus' onyx sphere. He had underestimated Jericho gravely, something which he would not risk again. Death is patient, and, therefore, His champion must be as well. Thus, Karthus withdrew to a deep part of the temple, where he could rest and reconstruct his physical form from the nothingness it was reduced to by Swain's magics.
One does not simply cheat death, for in the game of Life, it is Death who deals the cards...And the house always wins in the end.
