Aug 22nd, 23 CLE
The moon was high in the night sky, casting a shadow across the now-barren wastes of Kalamanda. A reaper, bearing not a scythe but an orb of onyx, black as night, floated over the scarred lands in search of a single being, one whose race had long since vanished from this earth. But Karthus was not here to harvest the souls of the living; Instead, he came bearing a warning.
Even if Karthus could not intrinsically sense where Skarner's mortal soul was, his lair would have been fairly easy to locate: It was the only thing around that appeared to have been recently constructed, and there were several signs directing passers-by to it's location. The undying lich came to a stop just before the lair's entrance, planting his skeletal feet upon the ground as he awaited the crystalline scorpion's approach. If any virtue could describe Death's Herald, it was patience.

The Morning of August 23rd, 23 CLE
Skarner awoke from his slumber and skittered out of his home to begin a morning patrol of his lands. However, his early morning plans were swiftly dashed by the appearance of the Deathsinger on his 'doorstep'.
"Lich." Skarner greeted in a dark tone. He did not offer the courtesy of the creature's name. Goodwill was not often Karthus's intent. This was trouble.
"You are not welcome here, but I wish no quarrel with you. Leave and I will not pursue." Skarner lowered himself ever so slightly, taking a slightly wider stance and his tail rose threateningly.

The lich produced a short laugh and stood his ground. "I come not to claim your life this morning, O Last of the Brackern....As some are inclined to believe." Karthus replied, his face frozen in a nigh-mocking skeletal leer.
"You are not the last Brackern alive," Karthus continued, "But the first to awaken. Even now, I can sense your kin deep beneath the earth. They have slumbered for centuries, locked in magical stasis to protect them from the magic that suffuses this land...To protect them from the sands of time....To hold them from Death's Grasp." Karthus tilted his head slightly, his true intent made clear.
"Your time is running out, Skarner. Your kin have been sheltered from their entropy for long enough, and Death grows impatient. If they are not awoken soon...Death will arrange for them to be awoken more....forcefully." Karthus left his last fragment hanging in the air, presuming that Skarner would put the pieces of Karthus' intent together.

"Threats to my kin do you no service here, Lich. I respect your power, but I need no such urges from you to do what I have doing since my awakening. Unless you wish to tell me something of note, leave. My patience wears thin."
Skarner spoke confidently, but Karthus was an unnerving creature under normal circumstances and this ominous warning only reinforced Skarner's urge to save his kind.
Either Karthus was being completely honest and a powerful being that may actually be Death itself would will the death of his kin without any chance for Skarner to stop him directly, or Karthus himself would attack his people, and that was a fight Skarner was not eager to do. The Lich was powerful and could attack the dormant Brackern with little warning. Worse still was the idea of fighting an undead brother or sister.
Either way, Skarner wanted nothing more at this minute than to have the Lich off of his lands.

"The Herald of Death does not speak idly, Brackern. Heed my warning...And, should you not believe me, look for yourself. The spell that holds your brothers and sisters in their nigh-eternal sleep grows feeble. Very soon, it will shatter entirely. If you do not find a way to stave off their curse, then they will fall just as they had begun to before their slumber - And Death will not suffer them to be eternally locked in the dark dreams of stasis." Karthus replied, further re-enforcing his warning. "I do not wish for the end of your kin....But should Death decide they must join him beyond Death's Door, then so be it."
As Karthus finished speaking, he turned to leave, a dark mist starting to envelop his skeletal form as he made his first steps away from the Brackern's den. Should Skarner not stop him, the mist would consume his form entirely, and then fade away into nothingness - taking the Deathsinger with it.

Karthus faded into the mist and Skarner continued onto his patrol route, hoping the Lich would not visit his kind again. The urge to tear apart a trespasser was also rather strong, thus it was fortunate that there were none seeking the riches of Kalamanda today.
