February 17, 23 CLE
It was cold. Dreadfully cold.
But sometimes there are people that have to get on with their lives - and their jobs - in spite of it, and that prospect applies especially to Medical personnel. After all, duty does not dawdle nor dither, weather be darned. Of course, for those who have spent their times in cold climates and in Piltover - one of the most northern city-states out there - it is of little worry, at least compared to the people they are almost certain to run into here. Even so, to find themselves on a trip that may very well save countless lives within the City of Progress, it is of little surprise that this trip was needed.
And so, two men - and a yordle - from the specialized arm of the Piltover Patrol found themselves making an exhaustive trip up the tallest mountain on Valoran, carrying the necessary research equipment needed to determine the source of that mysterious ailment that was beginning to plague the citizens of the City-State. If it weren't that the men and the yordle had each other, the trip would have surely been a most anxious one, for it was not without trouble...
Gaining entry proved to be more of a hassle than expected - not least because one of the men's more clumsy moments resulted in an accidental discharge from his .44 hextech revolver, thankfully neither injuring nor harming no one - and they would have almost surely have been kicked off the mountain if not for their league-approved passports in that incident. The rest of the climb was hardly any better in of itself, with the populace giving the two men and the yordle moody glares and the wind picking up. While they were used to cold, they were not used to this kind of cold.
It was a good amount of time that had passed before the men and rather oblique yordle finally found themselves eyeing the Solari Temple in the distance, at which the men breathed a sigh of relief; their torment would finally come to an end.
"Well, it's about time we finally got here!" Exclaimed one of the Medics, Sergeant Jung Hyeon-joong.
"Man, you've got a helluva mind to leave your .44 cocked like that. If Cap'n saw that..." the other Medic, Corporal Leonid Andropov replied.
"Hey, hey, hey! That was the only time it's happened, ok? Not like I finished last in the revolver tournament..."
"Don't. Talk. About. It."
"Come on you two; let's just get inside. It's f-f-freezing o-out here!" Piped up the yordle, Corporal Jerome Jeremy Roenick.
The three medics then gave a nod - agreeing not to mention it again - and made their way forward towards Solari Temple. Seeing the entrance, they made their way to a small distance in front, and waited to be let in, not seeing anyone in the open yet.
The men and yordle could be described quite simply. Their patrol fatigues and helmets clearly identified them as Medical personnel, their backpacks carrying the research/measuring equipment, and their belts having their revolvers in their holsters (which were unloaded ever since the entrance incident). They were wearing winter coats and gloves as well, which also carried the Medical emblem. A tiny variant of all this was made specifically for yordles, which he wore.
And so, three rather out of place Medics were waiting outside the temple, awaiting an audience with the Avatar of the Sun they were told to meet...

To say that the two men and a yordle stood out on the mountain would be an immense understatement. Their clothing, their behavior, and in the case of the yordle, stature, were nothing like most inhabitants of the mountain had ever seen. Needless to say, it would come as a surprise to see two strangely clad men accompanied by a similarly dressed short creature before the temple of the Solari on the peak of Mount Targon. However, it would be impossible to tell that the armored and cloaked figures by the entrance of the temple were even so much as capable of emotion to any observer. The arrivals were briefly regarded with cold stares delivered from the depths of a helmet before one of the figures spoke. "State your business, travelers."

The cold response caught both Corporals off guard a bit, not expecting a degree of unwelcoming feelings that they were experiencing here. The Sergeant, however, gave no apparent motion, except to take off his helmet - in the freezing cold - to make his face easier to see, hoping that making himself be more recognizable would make his group appear less alien, and reply.
"I am Sergeant Jung Hyeon-joong, and these two with me are Corporals Leonid Andropov and Jerome Roenick, who is a yordle. We are of the Piltover Patrol's first combat-ready response division - a.k.a. the Piltover Medical Corps - and we are here on behalf of the City-State and the Institute of War to request an audience with the League Champion Leona, with the intention of requesting for her assistance in resolving a question regarding a worrying medical discovery recently made within Piltover's hospitals," the man replied. He turned around, and looking at his companions, gave a nod.
The other man and the yordle looked at each other and back at the man, and nodded themselves, before taking off their own helmets as well, in spite of the blistering winds and chilling temperature, all to create a less unwelcoming appearance - as well as to show that their request and honesty was genuine.

The figure nodded, a simple, emotionless gesture of having acknowledged what the man had conveyed to him, nothing more, nothing less. He shifted the spear he carried on his right to his left, holding it and his shield at the same time. An armored gauntlet emerged from underneath the cape enveloping his figure by the side on which his spear used to be, it struck the large, bronze door behind him three times, the echoing sound of metal clashing against metal fading away after a few seconds to near total silence. It was but a moment later that the door slid slightly open by the actions of someone on the inside. The man rotated his head toward the gap in the door, speaking a few words in a language incomprehensible to the visitors before the door slid shut once more. The spear he held resumed its position on his right, and the man resumed his previous stance, motionless but for the movement of his cape in the wind.
The door slid from the inside once more, and a quick burst of the same language the man on the outside had spoken came from within. The man looked at the two strangely dressed men and a yordle that stood before the temple steps. An oddity on the mountain indeed. "The Avatar of the Sun will see you.". As if practiced thousands of times before, the man and the figure that stood on the opposite him by the double doors leading to the interior of the temple walked in unison toward each other, stopping but a few steps apart, then simultaneously pulled the doors outward to admit the three visitors entry into the temple.
On the interior, there would be a single figure clad similarly to the ones on the outside, carrying a spear alone instead of the spear and shield of the figures outside, waiting for the visitors to approach. Upon traversing the barrier between the cold, harsh environment of Mount Targon and the temple interior the visitors would notice a significant change in temperature, instead of the biting cold of the outside, the temple was comfortably warm. The figure on the inside would then gesture for the three to follow, adding but a few words to the gesture. "Come, I will lead you to her."

The three Medics stood, attentive, yet interested, at the formal method that seemed to be how entry was gained into the temple. Upon seeing the doors open and the gesture, the men and yordle nodded, and strapping their helmets to their backpacks made their way in.
The significant difference in temperature was stifling to the medics, their winter coats now making them feel like they were in an oven. Quickly taking off their overcoats and efficiently folding them into their large backpacks, they looked to the man who would take them to the woman they were to meet, and began to make pace following him.
The Yordle looked around, in awe of what he was seeing within the temple, while the men, having been educated on such religions in Valoran, weren't as awed, though they secretly marveled at the splendor of such a place.

The sound of metal boots impacting the marble underfoot echoed throughout the expanse of the Solari temple, followed by the clattering of the metal plate armor underneath the man's enveloping cape came with each step he took. It was not long before he would guide them to a room, rather expansive in comparison to the hallways which they had just been travelling through. The walls of the room were lined with statues, although they could have easily been mistaken for actual people, their marble countenances so lifelike. The pedestals they stood on bore a script which would appear alien, perhaps detailing the names and deeds of the individual framed in marble above. Behind the statues, on the walls, were carved scenes, adorned with occasional script, but it was largely the image itself that told the story.
On the far side of the room, looking upon the carvings in the wall, was another figure, not armored, like all the ones the visitors had encountered up until now, but instead wearing a simple cloth dress, sleeveless, stretching down to just above the shins, and fastened by a belt about the waist. The red hair streaming down past her shoulders would be the clearest identifier for the visitors that it was she who they were looking for.
The man who the three had followed through the temple up until this point stepped forward, Leona turning to face him as he did. The two briefly held discourse in the same foreign language which had been spoken by the guards at the entrance, and when it was finished, the man stepped back, pressing his right fist to his chest in a salute, one which Leona returned. The man turned on his heel and left the room after this interaction had finished. Leona then set her gaze upon the three visitors. She had never seen attire like the kind they wore before, nor were the odd metal weapons sticking out from the holsters on their belts familiar. Her golden eyes rested on the yordle a moment longer than the other two. Despite her time as a League champion, she had never gotten fully used to them, and the fact that she had not seen one in a while added to her feeling of curiosity. She made certain not to stare, however, breaking the silence with a greeting. "Welcome to the peak of Mount Targon, Piltoverians. I hope your trek up the mountain did not prove too difficult?"

"Come on, it's Piltovian! Get it right!"Andropov retorted in his mind. He nearly said it aloud, but a furtive glance from Roenick managed to prevent him from openly disrespecting a League Champion in her home.
Oh, it was no trouble at all, miss. No trouble at all, other than the cold," Hyeon-Joong replied - partially intending to mask Andropov's near mistake - and ended with a half-joke, which actually could be considered true if one knew some of the other shenanigans that erupted previously. Andropov and Roenick did not exhibit any noticeable reaction, other than their swerving eyes that looked at the statues and indeterminable language they were not taught to speak.
"We're here on behalf of the City-State and the Institute to investigate a lead that some of Piltover's researchers have uncovered with regards to finding a cure to a new mind-baffling disease that has begun to appear within the City-State," Hyeon-Joong continued, "and we've come to ask if you would be willing to assist us in helping to find a few answers pertaining to the disease that would allow us an easier way to develop said cure." With that, he fell silent, and both Corporals immediately came back to attention, though not at ease.

Leona gave a slow nod in reply to Hyeon-Joong's sentence involving the trek up the mountain. The cold was always an issue for those who were not native to the mountain or from other similarly bitterly cold regions. Their statement of purpose which followed matched what had been conveyed to her from the entrance, and their quest seemed noble. Leona had no reason to believe they might be there on false pretenses. She was doubtful that she could be of much assistance to them, as her knowledge on diseases was limited, at best. However, if there was even so much as a chance that she could help those who were suffering from this strange ailment, she would try to precisely that. "I am afraid I know little in the way of medicine, but I am willing to help. What would you have me do?"
Post by Piltover Medical Corps on Jan 8, 2014 12:05:34 GMT -5
"Well, it's actually not what you can provide that would be difficult; in fact, it would be comparatively easy. The difficult part is, well..." Hyeon-Joong stumbled for a moment, not sure how to word his explanation properly,
"...whether or not you're willing to commit to such an action as casting a solar flare?" He finished rather awkwardly. The other Medics shuffled a little bit, rather unsure of what to say in light of their leader's uncertainty in asking his question.
((Sorry for the short post, but I couldn't think of a longer one without god-modding. Stupidity!))

A solar flare? Casting one would hardly be an issue, but Leona could not see how one could be of any help when it came to helping cure a disease. Nevertheless, she had committed herself to helping them, and would do as they asked. "Yes, of course." she replied, pausing for a moment. "But not here. Come." she then said, gesturing for the group to follow. She started off down one of the corridors of the temple, the sound of the sandals on her feet against the marble were noticeably quieter than the loud echoing footsteps of the man that had led the three to her. The hallways they followed lead to a pair of bronze doors, like the ones at the entrance to the temple, but smaller. Leona pressed both her hands to the doors and pushed them outward, opening the way into a courtyard. On the first step through the door the biting cold of Mount Targon could be felt again, but Leona did not seem to be bothered by it. She checked briefly to make sure that there was nothing that would be damaged by a solar flare. The courtyard they exited to was entirely empty, save for an elevated firepit in each corner. "Before I cast a solar flare, are there any particular instructions you would wish me to follow? Cast on a certain piece of equipment, or with a certain intensity? she asked.

"Well, it's simple at its core, really: we're going to setup a measuring device - hardened for solar radiation, so no worries there - at the location we'll have you cast the solar flare on. It will be connected to a reader we brought along, and the information that we garner from it is what we're here for."
"As to you, it's simple: as soon as the set-up and you are ready, cast the flare on the device. That is all; simple and, hopefully, easy," Hyeon-joong explained, as Andropov and Roenick both went to work setting up the device. Andropov laid out at the center the measuring device and was wedging it into the ground, while the yordle, Roenick, went to work moving the attached wire back towards where the Sergeant and Leona were, holding the wire unraveling itself in one hand and the reader in the other.
"While they're getting set up, do you have any questions about this experiment or anything related to such?" Hyeon-Joong thoughtfully asked Leona.

"Very well." came Leona's reply, as she stood back and watched the man and the yordle set to work putting up their odd piece of equipment. It was foreign to her, this piece of technology, and she watched with curiosity as they unpackaged and build the strange device before her. Her curiosity engrossed her so that she almost missed the question that the sergeant presented to her. Questions on the experiment? A few came to mind. "I fail to understand how a solar flare cast on this device might be of any use in finding a cure to a disease."
Post by Piltover Medical Corps on Jan 8, 2014 16:40:16 GMT -5
"Well, it's a long and complicated story, and if I told you the whole thing now, we'd be here the next day," Hyeon-Joong replied truthfully, "And I'm sure you have better things to do than just listen me go on and on with details that you likely don't even understand and would likely bore you."
"In short, the critical discovery we made in this disease is that all of the affected patients had a rather long encounter with sunlight. Normally this is attributable with another commonly known disease called 'Cancer,' but we found to our surprise that our anti-dote for it didn't work on this new disease. Even more interesting: it's only sunlight that causes it; no other form of light causes this disease to form."
"This device here will be able to register the intense sunlight and register a few scenarios we have to determine if it is indeed sunlight that causes this disease. As you can see, out trip here was not unwarranted," the Sergeant finished, tilting his head a bit.
The Corporals were still at work assembling the experiment, the man now rather comically trying to right the measuring device - which was constantly falling over - and the yordle trying vainly to pull the wire around a rock that he accidentally looped the wire around.

Sunlight causing disease. Leona had witnessed firsthand, and many times wielded, the destructive power of the sun, but yet had always thought of sunlight as that which gives life to all things. The fact that it could cause disease was a troubling piece of information, and that sunlight alone was to blame made it only more so. Before she could travel too far down this particular trail of thought, she was brought back to the world at hand by the sounds of the man and yordle attempting to set up their piece of equipment. It was rather amusing to her, seeing the two go about their work in such a comical manner, although she made sure not to make that emotion visible. She considered offering her assistance for a moment, although she quickly decided against such an action, she was entirely unfamiliar with how the device worked and would only be a hindrance to the two.

Andropov and Roenick were still trying to get set up the experiment for a good minute, when Hyeon-Joong finally decided enough was enough and went in to personally rectify the problem. After another minute of unwrapping the mana-infused wire from the rock and sticking up the measuring device with a paper-clip, the set-up was complete.
And even then, problems still unfolded. When Roenick attempted to turn on the hextech reader, there was no power. A quick battery check revealed the mana batteries were dead, and that a new pair was needed. This was resolved by tying a mana potion that the group had brought along to a copper wire and a hextech converter to create a makeshift battery to power the reader.
Roenick tried the switch again, and this time the reader turned on, the needle now fully working."Alright, we're all set up and should be good to go ahead. Leona, if you would kindly cast a solar flare on that device..." the Sergeant concluded, him and the Corporals then proceeded to take a few steps back and put on their winter goggles, knowing that the soon-to-come flare would be painful.
