Twisted Fate sat at a table in the one of many lounges found in the Institute of War. The table was quite as all the men sat their eyes darting toward each man at the table. All of them had their breath waiting for the first man to show his cards. The Cardmaster had nothing to fear, the pot for over a thousand gold was his. These suckers had no clue, they thought he was bluffing, but they should have caught on to a simple lesson by now.
The Cardmaster never bluffs.
The sounds of moans and groans filled the area around the table as all the other players showed their weaker hands to one another. Meanwhile Twisted Fate's face was conquered by a cocky smile, as he claimed the gold in the pot as his own. He then picked up all the card. The gypsy was making sure that Destiny always smiled on him, and frowned on those that he played against. His movements were smooth and flawless, only those with eyes sharper than a hawk could pick up on these sleights of hand. Once he was done shuffling he would set the deck on the table, and look at the patrons around him.
"Now come on fellas. Y'all can't give up after one bad hand, lady luck will surely smile on ya' this time." He would say with a friendly smile, but the summoners around him would look at each other, and shake their heads. They would get up and leave muttering curses and sighing in frustration. They had been cheated, but were fooled by Twisted Fate's clever words. The gypsy just shrugged as they walked away and placed his feet on the table. Waiting for someone to catch his eyes or approach him for something, whether it be an autograph, advice, or a friendly game. It mattered very little to TF, and now he just waited for whoever or whatever Destiny would send him.

It had been quite a busy day indeed.
Between filling out and filing paperwork, aiding in cleaning the Bronze halls, and attempting her Weekend tradition of studying Champions past and present she was unfamiliar with, the Summoner of silver hair was fully ready for a relaxing break, if even only a short reprieve sent from Heaven itself in the form of a musty corner lounge of the Institute.
Of course there were many other things she could have been doing. But for only a moment she wished to relax, to not lock herself away in the confines of her room with naught but a book and her imagination to keep her company. Her goal was to socialize, to met and greet, to find some proof that not everyone was a demented and wretched, spiteful old widow that thought it was a good idea to pummel a small child into submission from drunken rage every single-
Without really noticing, Naiyu had reached near a table occupied by a certain Cardmaster. Her fretful thoughts elsewhere at the time, she effectively bumped straight into the piece of furniture, shoving it a good few meters away from it's original position. With a jolted gasp and a concerned glance towards whomever she'd just shifted forcefully, the small woman steadied the table and regarded the man with worried golden orbs flustering in embarrassment.
"I-I'm sorry, I'm sorry!! I wasn't w-watching where I was g-going, I-"
She gave a short pause, glancing over his features a few times over before adding tentatively, "...are you...p-perhaps...Twisted Fate?..."

The musty corner lounge that the silver haired summoner found herself was fairly spacious. It was not one of the more popular lounges found within the Institute of War. Often lower ranking summoners, or those in training could be found here. Champions such as Twisted Fate could often be found in places like this. Often the less lawful types would find a certain homage in such places, or perhaps a rival of theirs occupied their favorite lounge and simply desired a place as far away as possible from the other lounge. Whatever their purpose this lounge would serve to satisfy that purpose. Located in one of the corners was the bar that served low quality alcohol. The Cardmaster rarely participated in drinking the alcohol that was located here, even he had standards. If he was found here then he would be drinking out of a bottle located below his chair. Some of the wood panels would squeak as one walked on them, and the furniture......looked as though it had seen better days. Some of the wooden chairs exuded an odor of rot, which very few could withstand. Fortunately for the silver haired summoner, that furniture was on the other side of the room.
Twisted Fate had heard someone approach the table, he could tell from the squeaking wood, and lifted his head a bit. There was a young woman approaching the table, but she seemed to be in her own little world. The Cardmaster lifted his feet off the table as she bumped into it scattering the cards on the table to the floor. Right....he forgot about those. The young woman left out a flustered gasp, and began to apologize as Twisted Fate regarded her. Granted, his own eyes were hidden, but nonetheless he sized the woman up. He made a few quick assumptions, she wasn't comfortable where she was, she was easily flustered, and did not like disturbing others. Granted, these were simple assumptions that the gypsy made based on his intuition and experience in dealing with people. She would make an easy mark. However, he was surprised when she had to ask for him to confirm his identity...that made her an even easier mark. However, Twisted Fate did not have a tab this time around so she would be spared.....perhaps.
"The one n' only in the flesh." He would reply as he stood, and faced Naiyu. "The better question is, who are you mon cheri petite fleur?" There was no hostility in his tone, just simple curiosity in who the woman before him was.

A gentle flush of pink tinted the woman's face. She had only just begun to delve into learning of Champions outside of her natural element, and here was one presented to her in...not so flattering a way. She'd effectively just left a very awkward first impression that would be difficult to remove from the man's mind, no doubt. She was aware of his title as an expert gambler, but besides the very basic knowledge of his abilities on the Fields of Justice, that was the extend of what she knew currently. It was already a stretch for her mind to recall his title...
His compliment of sorts didn't go unnoticed, either, earning him and even stronger, vivid blossom of color graced on her cheeks. She only knew of his skills in combat, after all. She had no inkling nor hint to his skills with words. It was going to be a very strange mingling of speech between the two should the conversation continue past simple introductions. Speaking of...
"...M..." She began, clearing her throat as to stave off the creeping nervousness, "...M-My name is..Naiyu. Naiyu...Persici Lu..." Managing to get through her name without much of a flop, she gave a very polite bow towards him, the sides of her snow white hair brushing over her shoulders. "...A pleasure...to meet you, Mister Fate..." As she straightened she observed with slight depression the difference in their heights. Yet another person she couldn't see eye-to-eye with...literally. Nevertheless, she continued to add casually to her introduction, "...I'm...still only a simple...Bronze Ranked S-Summoner...I'd only just gotten into remembering...Champions that don't Support...naturally, a-anyway..."
Her eyes gave another quick sweep of the area, noting the cards she'd upset and toppled onto the ground finally. With a slightly self-berating click of her tongue she knelt down and began scooping them up. She couldn't note if anything had been altered or strange about them, her virgin eyes simply seeing numbers and colors where others would see reason to be outraged or laugh hysterically. Novice as she was, however, she did find it rather...curious. Once the cards were safely liberated from the floor and nestled into her palms, she presented them to the Cardmaster, her head tilted gently to the right.
"...M-My apologies again...er...did I...gather these right?..."

The Cardmaster noticed her rapidly growing on her face. The young woman shyly introduced herself as Naiyu Persici Lu, a bronze summoner without much knowledge of champions outside of those that Summoners deemed to be support in nature. Furthermore, she either lacked confidence or was still flustered from stumbling into the table. Twisted Fate placed his bet on the former rather than the latter. "A beautiful name that fits someone as fair as yer'self, mon cheri petite fleur" The silver tongued rogue would reply offering a confident smile. It was one of his old lines that always seemed to be effective no matter how many different women he tried it on. No doubt she would be more flustered from such a compliment, but it was fairly entertaining to watch. Regardless he watched her quickly pick the cards up, and offer them to him with her head tilted to the side. She seemed to observe a few of the cards more carefully than the rest, but it seems that she did not notice any issues with the cards she had gathered. This made Twisted Fate ponder if she was serious competition, and this shy girl act was merely a ploy to make him lower his guard.
"They're basic playin' cards, it's better that they're a bit more mixed up. Ah might find more people ta' play a game with me then." The gypsy would say, the latter part of the comment being more off-hand and an assertion of fact. Those who valued their coin would never step up to play against the Cardmaster, rather Twisted Fate would have to get them drunk before they even thought to play a game. However, a few played him to hear his witty remarks and to 'chew the fat' as they played with the hand fate dealt them. After this brief moment of consideration, Twisted Fate would move the table back to its original position. Then, being the gentleman he was, the gypsy would bring up a chair for Naiyu to sit down in,"But please tell me, Naiyu, why does Destiny bring ya' before me? Surely, someone like yer'self could be in a more luxurious lounge, don't ya' think?"
It was a rather simple question, but Twisted Fate was curious about what this particular summoner was doing here. She did not seem like one who would enjoy the company of drunken brutes, a pair of which was currently leering at her from the corner. Rather, she would more likely be comfortable by herself or with close friends that she could trust. Destiny must have sent her to the unlawful gypsy for some reason.

"...I..." Naiyu started, but fell silent on her words, unable to find a reply to the older man's remarks. Her hips gave a gentle sway and she shifted her footing, eyes drifting timidly away as her face burned into another brilliant shade of red. There was something to be said for Twisted Fate's skills with words, but it was made all the more potent on the naive and mostly immaculate female. "...Thank y-you...it's...uhm...v-very kind of you, to s-say so..."
As he explained the cards to the attentive woman she listened and never doubted. It was not as if she had ever been inclined to play card games or other such gambling means before, so she had no reason to contest the knowledge he had. After all, he was The Cardmaster. Who among fresh green Summoners would imagine him a con artist simply by that? If only she had read through the pages of his given Lore...but alas, all she saw was a competent gambler looking for players to idle his time away till he departed...so maybe...
The chair scooting behind her roused the petite one out of her thoughts, her eyes studying it with consideration. "...I'm not...quite sure, m-myself...I just walk, from time to t-time...my feet just...brought me here, today...I suppose...?" She confessed, quite unsure to her circumstances herself. Normally she'd end up outside, or near the library, but it seemed today's destination was a bit...mustier than normal. And the company seemed to match, as well. Only when trying to bring her gaze up to meet Twisted Fate's did she note the 'gentlemen' showing interest in her. In a swift motion she seemed to shrink defensively and bring the chair tighter against the edge of the table, squeezing her lithe frame into it. Attention like this was a very foreign concept to her...
Busying her fingers with the tips of her hair, she ventured a question to the man, eyes never leaving the table. "Ah...you...said you were looking for people to play?...I-I don't much know the rules, but...if it's not t-too difficult, I...wouldn't mind trying...?"

A soft smile formed on the gypsy's face as the young summoner's face became a shade of red that only cherries' share. An easy mark indeed, in fact she looked like she was about to pass out. He could poke her and she would tip over at that state, and perhaps she would not get back up. However, Twisted Fate was a gentleman and could not think to possibly do such a thing to any woman. As she explained her reasoning for being here he would move back to his own seat, and sit down. His boots made the planks squeak more than her own footsteps, then again...he was heavier then her and wearing thicker shoes. Her reasoning was rather strange, but it resonated with his gypsy background.
"Ya' just followed where your feet take ya'. Hmm, Ah' kinda like that idea...it strikes a chord with mah own background as a gypsy. We're known fer' wanderin' without really knowin' where our travels will take us after all." He would say chuckling as he recalled a few misadventures with his family, but then the young summoner asked if he wanted to play a round of cards with her. It was clear from the moment she walked in, and her lack of knowledge about the cards that she was a complete novice. Probably never touched a card in her life or even thought about gambling.
"Well, Ah' reckon' ya' know who yer're talkin ta'. Normally, Ah'd jump at the chance for easy money, but considerin' yer' new at the game, Ah' can't take money from such a kind, fair, n' curious young lady like yer'self. So Ah'll teach ya'...Noxus Hold' Em. Fairly easy ta' learn, n' gives you a chance to experiment. How does that sound?"

"A gypsy..." The word rolled off her tongue, an almost lackadaisical look on her face as she recalled what a gypsy was in her head. An educated person would link the title to a travelling fortune telling people with various other aspects between them, but the Summoner couldn't help the image of wind swept flowing gowns, brightly colored kerchiefs and clattering sashes lined with coins. Stereotypical, of course. But it was the common image she knew...before today. Interacting with the elder male made her all the more curious as to what his background really was, but she was fine simply talking with the Cardmaster for now.
Naiyu watched as Twisted Fate seated himself and listened well to his proposition to her. Of course she knew she was dealing with a well honed expert here. She had no intentions of winning on her very firs try, if at all possible to win against him with her limited knowledge. Her lack of skill coupled with yet another compliment thrown her way made a light red smooth over her cheeks once more. Of course...another thing to get used to. With nary a moment wasted but to clear her burning face, she nodded her head, offering the man a pleasant smile to attempt hiding her shyness. "That...sounds fine, it's should be...too hard, right?...I'll do my b-best to learn quickly...!"
As he probably would have surmised, she had next to no experience with cards, the most she could recall being tales of gamblers ambling past her window during the nights she stayed awake. Through educated guesses and few glimpses here and there, she could tell the names and purposes of cards if needed, but beyond that scope she was a novice in Twisted Fate's hands.

The Cardmaster smiled as she stated that she would learn very quickly. Always ready to please hmm...maybe that's who she was. Never wanting to let anyone down or disappoint someone, or was there a darker reason behind her behavior. Regardless it mattered very little to The Cardmaster, in fact he appreciated her eagerness to learn. "Relax, mon cheri petite fleur, ya' will learn the game in time. There ain't no pressure, Ah' just wanted ta' make sure ya' knew what ya' were gettin' into. Lady Luck favors me above all others. He would look at the top card of the deck, and smiled. It didn't matter what it was, and he was just going to shuffle it into the deck. He would place it back on the deck, and elaborately shuffle the deck in multiple ways very quickly. He started with the traditional shuffle, into the Pharaoh cut, then the triple cut, and finally shuffled the cards one time using a single hand. The man before the bronze summoner clearly earned the title, The Cardmaster. His hands worked fluidly as the cards changed place rapidly during his shuffle, was he cheating or was he playing fair? Had he ever been caught cheating when he shuffled the deck? If so....how? These were common questions that a curious fan would ask Twisted Fate, but the gypsy would offer a cocky smile and reply that a magician never revealed his secrets. He liked those that opposed him in anyway to know that he cheated them out of what should have been a clean-cut victory or capture. It gave him a thrill, much like how battle drives Pantheon.
Finally, after he was done shuffling, he would deal Naiyu and himself two cards. Afterwards he would reveal the two cards in his hand to help teach Naiyu how to play the game. The Cards were a 5 of hearts and a seven of spades. Naiyu was dealt a 10 of clubs and a 4 of diamonds. "Now what ya' got here is yer' two card hand. Naturally, ya' wouldn't want to reveal them to yer' opponent, but Ah' figure since this is a trial run, Ah' reckon' that it'll be fine." He would explain pausing for a brief moment, "Now there are three actions one can take. The first is ta' check, which means ya' don't put any money on the table, but want to see the next card. It's kinda like skippin' yer' turn. The next action one can take is ta' bet, which Ah' reckon' is fairly self explanatory. The last action one can take is ta' fold, or sit out the hand cause ya' don't think ya' can win." He would explain before waiting for Naiyu to give a sign that she understood.

The Summoner's golden eyes never left the deck as the Cardmaster artfully moved them around with a grace and speed only an expert could replicate. A small inkling of nervousness etched her features, her lower lip captured between her teeth as he dealt out her cards. It was a familiar rush of anxiety, but it was from an unfamiliar source. Was this the high many experienced when gambling? Having something at stake,at least normally, and leaving it all up to chance and luck?
Was this the trade Twisted Fate so masterfully controlled and flirted with daily?
The cards were flipped, and immediately Naiyu felt herself jerk slightly in her seat. She peered excitedly at both of their cards, eager to try and understand or form a theoretical understanding on her own, but quickly noted she couldn't make heads nor tails of it. She'd have to rely on his explanation...oh well...
Once her options were presented to her she pondered them quietly, still pressing the edges of her teeth into her lip. Her cards did not look very favorable to her...to check, to bet or to fold...since her cards did not present any appeal there wasn't much rush to bet on them. But folding already would defeat the purpose of even bothering the elder man with this fiasco of learning. "I...I suppose I should...check?" She questioned, bringing her smoldering gaze to meet Twisted Fates.
Post by The Cardmaster on Feb 7, 2014 23:38:38 GMT -5
"I would do so at this point. Ah' always call checkin' a safe move, but it can be read as uncertainty or caution meanin' ya' might not be sure of yer' hand. So Ah'm tellin' ya' ta' be careful in terms of how much ya' check." The Cardmaster would reply, and he tapped the table with two fingers indicating he would do the same. However, instead of dealing out The River he decided to continue advising Naiyu. With the flick of his wrist, and the slightest motion of his hand four cards would appear in his right hand. Two were the six of hearts and spades respectively, while the other two were the Jacks of diamonds and clubs. "Now there is a bit of an exception ta' the safe first move rule. If ya' were dealt a pair, two cards of the same number, then ya' might consider puttin' money on the table. This is what we gamblers call a "pocket" or havin' a pair in the hand yer' dealt. Somethin' that Ah' like ta' go by is that ya' can't go wrong with the Jack Pocket's family." He would tell her with a slight smirk on his face. He would always bet some amount of money on a pocket jacks, and he usually ended up winning that hand. Granted, he ended up winning most hands anyways. " A pair of Jacks is somewhat difficult to beat early on, n' goin' forward with some money can make yer' competitors a bit uneasy. Which is always an advantage fer' ya'. However, don't count yer' chickens befer' they hatch. Ah've seen many players lose cause' they bit off more then they could chew. Often with me." Another confident smirk spread across his face as his magic hands moved over to the deck and dealt The River, or three cards that were placed face up in the middle of the table.
A ten of spades, a five of diamonds, and an Ace of hearts were the next three cards. Right now Naiyu held the advantage, would she realize it? The gypsy's golden eyes watched her carefully testing to see how much she had picked up on within a few minutes. He would put good money down that she was quite smart, and not a fool, however what she had in brains...she lacked in confidence. Two traits that were very important in a game of cards. You had to know when you were going to win, or convince those gathered around the table that you would win. That you had THE winning hand. Sometimes a sleight of hands would help achieve that hand, but there were no dirty tricks here. ...for now. However, his eyes would look over at her, while remaining concealed under his hat. Observing her, looking for her tell or some gesture or habit one had when they received a good or bad outcome. One of the hardest to overcome was the fact that the human's pupils would dilate when presented with a good hand, it was so natural that most did not know they did it. Hence there was a reason why Twisted Fate always wore the hat on his head.

Naiyu listened will as the gypsy talked, her eyes borrowing into the cards laid upon the table. She twisted, turned, crossed and re-crossed her legs. A sigh, a hum, a thoughtful scrunch of her small nose. She was still fairly uncertain as to how the rules really functioned, but she was stating to form the basic of understanding in her mind. Her eyes followed his fingers as they tapped, assuming he meant to do the same as her and check. His hands flickered again and she blinked, staring just a tad flabbergasted as he seemed to materialize new cards from seemingly thin air. Was this a part of what made him, him? Her curiosity clearly etched itself out on her features, but still she listened well to him. So betting was a somewhat safe move on pairs, especially Jack pairs...but she needed to be fairly safe about betting still. This would be quite the task for the fresh Summoner.
Carefully she observed the cards on the table that Twisted Fate laid out. As she saw them her eyes lit up just a bit, an almost comical shifting of her eyes between The Cardmaster and the cards. There was a ten, just like in her hand! But should she reach for it? Her uncertainty was not very plain to see, but to the older man before her she might as well had been wearing it around her neck. Her eyes, strange as they were, dilated and widened, a sliver of quick pink passing over her lips in a slight motion to wet them as she thought for a while. It was an obvious sign, much too obvious for a gambler, but it showed she was beginning to get it. Finally her lithe fingers flicked forward, pressing against the card and slowly sliding it towards her side of the table. Her golden gaze peeked up at the gypsy, as if questioning her choice. She couldn't see his eyes, the hat obscuring most of his face from her, but she was fairly certain he was at least paying attention to her movements. Hopefully he'd hint to her if she was going about this well or not...

Twisted Fate watched Naiyu's eyes light up in a comical expression that was one tell, then she licked her lips, her second tell, and finally her eyes clearly dilated a bit. Well Naiyu had three tells, which wasn't bad...it was kinda natural that a player starts out with a few for their first game. It is not like they know any better at this point, but fortunately for her, she had the best teacher in all of Runeterra. Then he watched her reach for the card and start to pull it toward her side of the table, and this got Twisted Fate to chuckle. He placed a hand on the card she was bringing to her side to stop her. "Ah'm afraid ya' don't get ta' keep the card because ya' have a pair. Cards drawn from this here deck stay in the middle of the table so all players can see. Now, often upon seein' these cards revealed players will look round' and try ta' figure out the tells of the people gathered 'round the table. A tell is somethin' that players often does when greeted with a good hand or card. Ya' can't piddle about in a game of cards, ya' have to be thinkin' n' tryin' ta' figure out if those around ya' have a better hand." He would explain to the bronze summoner and remove his hat. Now yer' new ta' all this, so Ah'll help ya' out a bit. But ya' gotta take care of mah hat, ya' hear?" After she answered he would place the hat on her head and adjust it so it would conceal her eyes. Granted, now Twisted Fate's golden eyes were quite visible meaning he had to be aware that his tell could be seen.
"What Ah' just did was hide two of yer' tells, but Ah'll leave ya' ta' figure out what the last one is. After all if ya' want ta' get better than ya' gotta learn how to handle yer' tells. So next game, Ah' take mah hat back, ya' hear?" The older man would say gently as he turned to look at her, and when she gave a sign that she understood he would look back at the middle of the table. "Now, Miss Lu, what do ya' think ya' should do here? Ah'm sure yer' a smart girl n' can figure it out. After all every dog has it's day." He would say to her, giving her words of encouragement.

The woman blinked several times, turning a light shade of pink in the face as Twisted Fate gently reprimanded her for her small novice-like mistake. Her hands retracted quickly and laced in her lap, then reached up and curled into the loose strands of her glittering snow hair. She was clearly embarrassed, but she tried to simply smile, albeit shyly, and keep her focus on the game at hand. As expected, the gypsy had told her of her slip-up....but it would have been nice to not slip up in the first place...
Her eyes remained on the cards, unless the Cardmaster was speaking, which then drew her gaze to him as she paid all of her available attention to him, still trying to remember his instructions as he gave them. Apparently there were...tells? Things that would give away whither your hand was good or not...apparently that could be a very unfavorable situation, and she had displayed quite a few herself...this was a bit more difficult than she had originally thought...
As she opened her mouth to inquire which 'tells' exactly she had, she felt her hair shift and a soft weight settle on her head, shielding her eyes ever so slightly as the rim of what she could only guess was Twisted Fate's hat came into view. Once more that vivid tinge of red spread across her face, though maybe now the older man couldn't see it...and apparently two of her tells. So this hat alone covered two? With a thoughtful hum she tapped her fingers against the side of the well known accessory, smiling towards the gypsy. "I...I'll take care of it..."
His question afterwards made her pause and stare at the cards once more, blinking her eyes as thought crept back to her. "...I...I think I'd...b-bet?...perhaps?..." She questioned, just a little unsure of herself, especially after her tiny mix-up earlier.
Post by The Cardmaster on Mar 23, 2014 17:20:58 GMT -5
Twisted Fate watched her carefully think about her next move. She said that she would handle the other two tells his hat failed to cover, it was harder than what one would think because it was on an unconscious level. Players had to make a constant conscious effort in order to overcome their tells, and it above all took practice, time and effort. The Cardmaster had put this into practice during his many cons that he performed in his spare time. After lying often involves controlling one's tells, though those could be slightly different. Regardless, experience is experience and Twisted Fate had far more than Naiyu's.
At her lack of confidence as she went to bet that was a signal, given her previous attitude, that she was not confident in herself. He smiled confidently and replied, "In that case Ah'll raise the stakes." He took some gold from his pocket and placed it on the table to indicate his raise in their pretend game. "Now the only reason Ah' did that was because of yer' lack of confidence. As it stands ya' have the advantage with yer' pair of ten's. When ya' say yer' gonna check or bet, ya' have to sound completely sure of yer'self. Then ya' have to express yer' assurance to those at the table, dare em' to challenge ya' because ya' will win regardless of what they do." It was true too, her lack of confidence meant that he could let her put money out there and force her to fold with a confident and very large raise indicating that he could have a better hand when he really didn't. He wanted her to try and express more confidence in her next move without directly telling her to do so any more than he already had. It was a test to see if she was paying attention.
