Note: Syndra is coming to examine the Temple of Pallas and its corruption more carefully, and will meet Varus on the way. Feel free to join in if your character has a reason to be around the Temple.
--- January 18th 24 CLE
In the early hours of the morning, the Celestial Fortress moved. Like an impassive hand, the building's shadow swept over Ionia, creeping towards the forests of Navori. Slowly and steadily, it moved, until it eased to a halt, positioned directly over an ancient temple. The Temple of Pallas.
Syndra had heard many stories about the corruption that lurked within the Temple. On the Fields of Justice, she had faced and allied with the Arrow of Retribution, the sworn guardian against the corruption. The Dark Sovereign had seen what the corruption had done to Varus; it had sunk into his veins and darkened his soul. But he was powerful now, and from what she knew, he was nothing but an ordinary archer before. It was this that had drawn her to the corruption. What could it do to her?
Now, as she directed her fortress to a halt above the Temple, the Dark Sovereign looked down from her balcony, a finger lightly tapping to a silent beat. Then, silently, the Dark Sovereign climbed over the balcony, letting her feet dangle. The wind blew strongly in her face, whipping her silver hair back. Syndra took no notice, and let herself slip off.
Instantly, she threw her hands out, immediately stopping her plummet. Quickly but controlled, she allowed herself to descend down, only stopping when her feet was about a foot or two above the ground. Stoically, the Dark Sovereign gazed around, before beginning to drift towards the entrance of the Temple, towards where she believed the corruption laid.

Varus saw the fortress coming well before it arrived at the temple. His eyes narrowed as it approach heralded the arrival of the Dark Sovereign. The corruption grew in excitement as her immense power came closer. He willed it to be silent. It obeyed him, but he could still feel the elation inside it.
He knew Syndra was hungry for power. Perhaps the call of the Pit had called to her, just as it had to him. He willed his bow to out of his arm. The black mass became fluid for a second, then solid. If she was here for the corruption, he would stop her. The corruption chided him, playing off of his doubt that he could beat her. He ignored it.
"What is your business here, Syndra?" he asked her as she ascended the temple's steps. His bow remained at his side, but he would use if needed.

Syndra slowed as she saw Varus step into view. Her headdress obscured any trace of emotions from her pupil-less eyes, but there was a small lift in her lips. Her eyes rested on the bow in Varus's hand.
As she gazed upon it, the ever-present Dark Spheres circling her pulsed almost hypnotically. She tilted her head. She sensed a strength within the bow that did not seem overbearing, yet very enticing. The Dark Sovereign raised her gaze.
'Stand aside, Varus.' she directed, firm but not aggressively. 'The corruption that you were sworn to protect interests me; I shall examine it.' Her words echoed with a reverberating power.
"A legion couldn't stop me; what chance do you have?"

"No" he replied, his voice cold. "I will not allow you to see it, lest it tries to consume you. You underestimate its intelligence. It is not some plaything to study. I will not let you endanger yourself and Ionia for your own curiosity."
His gripe tightened on his bow. He watched her carefully, waiting for the first sign of of aggression from her. The corruption goaded him to let her in, eager to find another host, one not as moral and resilient to it than him.

Syndra frowned, and her Dark Spheres accelerated their orbit.
'You overestimate my patience,' the Dark Sovereign hissed, looking past Varus into the Temple, her tone greedy.
Her eyes swiveled back to Varus, and her lips curled upwards. She spoke, her voice a cold purr.
'Do not stop me.' she warned. For a brief moment, neither of the two champions moved. Syndra's eyes flickered to the bow in Varus's grip; he wouldn't dare. With a wave, she began to move up the stairs.
"A legion couldn't stop me; what chance do you have?"

As Syndra moved, Varus drew his weapon. The bow pulsed with life, a corrupted arrow growing and notching into it. "And you underestimate my resolve. Leave this place Syndra, or I will fire." he threatened. "This is my last warning."
His eyes watched her every move. She was young and inexperienced, but made up for it with raw power. But he would not let her pass, as long as his broken body still moved.

Syndra's eyes darkened and she stopped her ascent. She looked almost incredulous that Varus was prepared to fight her.
An invisible force seemed to suddenly electrify the air around Syndra and her hair snapped to and fro. The Dark Sovereign spoke, her voice reverberating with a dangerous power.
"Your duty as guardian is done. I relinquish you from the burden of power."
As she spoke, the Dark Sovereign's left hand became a blur as she whipped it violently towards Varus. Immediately one of the Dark Spheres around her ripped itself out of orbit and launched itself at Varus, intending to knock him out.
"A legion couldn't stop me; what chance do you have?"

Varus gritted his teeth as Syndra acted, firing his arrow to intercept her orb as it flew towards him. The corruption was powerful, but he did not know if it was strong enough to withstand Syndra's magic.

The orb shuddered wildly as it collided with the arrow. The dark energy making up the Dark Sphere pulsed as the arrow ricocheted off the surface. However, the shot was enough to also deflect the direction of projectile, and the Dark Sphere smashed into the wall behind Varus, barely missing its target.
Syndra shook her head in mock disappointment. 'Varus,' she intoned, shaking her finger at him coyly. 'You know I have the power to bring my fortress down onto your sacred temple.' She shot a look upwards at the Celestial Fortress, as if to confirm her point.
"A legion couldn't stop me; what chance do you have?"

Varus had already notched another arrow before Syndra started to talk. Her words made him hesitate at the last second. He glared at her intensely. "You wouldn't dare" he growled at her. "Destroy this temple, and you will unleash a horror on this world that not even you could stop."
The corruption swelled with glee at the prospect of freedom from its prison. He resisted it's honey words to put the bow down and let her do this. His fingers twitched on the drawn arrow. He hoped this was only a bluff of hers.

Syndra laughed, her voice echoeing eeriely. 'I wouldn't dare?'
In an instant, a Dark Sphere materialized behind Varus, flickering ominiously. The Dark Sovereign smiled coldly.
'If you shoot that arrow at me, I will not hesitate to crush your skull with the sphere. If you somehow manage to hurt me, I will bring down the fortress.'
Syndra smiled triumphantly; she believed she held all the cards.
'Now, I only want a taste of the corruption.' she continued nonchalantly. 'It may not even interest me enough.'

Varus stared Syndra down, his anger etched on his face. He could likely shoot her down, but he couldn't risk her bringing her castle down on the temple. He hesitantly lowered his bow, the arrow re-absorbed into his body. He stood aside, allowing her entrance to the temple.
"You will regret those words." he told her. "You may not be interested in it, but it will be interested in you." Despite the situation, he felt his mind somewhat at ease. This arms would pulsate and shift, revealing small black eyes that would stare at Syndra. The corruption was focusing on her now, giving him a reprieve from its influence.
Syndra would find the interior in just as worse a condition as the exterior. Burning incense hung around the walls, giving off a sharp smell. A large, stone circle stood in the middle, the Sovereign's desire lay beneath it.

Syndra wrinkled her nose as she entered the temple. The smell of incense assaulted her senses and she blinked once, eyes threatening to water. Blinking, she focused on attention to the middle of the room, where a circular slab laid.
Consciously, she kept half of her attention on Varus, ready to retaliate should the guardian decide to fight her. The Dark Sovereign shivered slightly; there was a chill to the room--and she swore, dancing around the edges of her vision, there were shadows closing in. She shook her head quickly and dispelled any uncertainties.
'Let us see what Ionia fears.' Syndra whispered and lifted her hand. With a shudder, the stone circle shifted and began to rise.
"A legion couldn't stop me; what chance do you have?"

Varus watched grim face as Syndra entered the temple and began to raise the stone. He made no move now, but he would act should it try to merge with her. He would call her bluff rather than let someone else be corrupted, let alone someone as dangerous as Syndra. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The corruption was delighted with anticipation at it's new play thing. It began to exert it's influence on her .
As the stone began to rise, long black tendrils would rise from it's depths. They would travel towards the Sovereign faster than she could anticipate, grabbing her limbs and immobilizing her.
A shambling, black mass, rose from the pit, the tendrils connected to it's body. It would shamble towards the immobile champions, the black mass slowly gaining more features, until it resembled a human body that that been mangled into a pulpy mess. The mass of meat and bones would then begin to reassemble itself. By the time it reached Syndra, it was a fully formed human, wearing the face of her former master.
He gave her a cruel smile, one she would have never seen him use. He didn't look right, his facial features off, his posture was all wrong. He looked more like an imitation of a human than a real one. It tried to make some noise in communication, but its sounds were like it's appearance, a mockery of human speech.
The skin on it face slowly began to sag, like cooked meat off a bone. It began to reach for her face, a large black hand that would cover her whole face.
Varus watched as Syndra froze inside the temple. The corruption had it's hold on her now, using it's illusions to torment her in whatever sick ways pleased it. He would have to see how strong her will was, to hold out against the nightmare the corruption was attacking her with.

Syndra faltered as the black mass wrapped its tendrils around her limbs. They were cool--extremely so. The Dark Sovereign's concentration shifted to the mass, ready to remove the corruption from her body but her focus was broken by the arrival of the black mass.
Syndra shuddered as she recognized the face of her dead mentor. The Dark Spheres around her immediately positioned themselves between their master and the corruption.
'No.' Syndra whispered as the grotesque mockery of her mentor made its way towards her. She sounded almost afraid then, and her voice trembled slightly. But a voice of reason barked her back to the present. She had seen this sort of sorcery before--the Institute had tried to use her mentor as a way to unnerve her.
It is not real, Syndra reassured herself, stomach twisting. She watched as her 'mentor' made its way towards her, raising a melting hand towards her face. Before it could engulf her, Syndra acted.
'No!' she shrieked, throwing her hands outwards. Every inch of the Dark Sovereign's skin shimmered and a layer of invisible force ripped outwards from her body, attempting to throw any solid matter near her away from her. The Dark Spheres vibrated dangerously and pelted themselves at the main mass, prepared to batter the corruption to a pulp.
