The black orbs flew into the black mass, ripping it to shreds. The remainder of the force sent the pieces flying away from Syndra. Her shriek unnaturally continued to echo throughout the temple, her fear present in each echo.
The mass lay unmoving, limp and shredded on the ground. Suddenly the tendrils on her limbs sprung upwards attaching themselves to the ceiling, leaving her dangling from them. It would then move and jerk her around, similar to a puppeteer controlling a marionette. It continued to play back her horrified scream, mixed with a chaotic cacophony of demonic laughter.
The shadows on the wall seems to come to life in movement, watching and mocking the former all power sorceress being reduced to a mere plaything by the corruption. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The temple shook as Syndra released her magic wave, almost sending Varus to his feet. A bitter part of him laughed that Syndra was being tortured for her arrogance, but he knew it would not last much longer. She would either have to free herself from the illusion, or he would have to drag her out before the corruption grew tried of playing with her.

Syndra felt sluggish. The corruption continued to mock her, unceremoniously shoving her around. She let herself go limp, concentrating. The air around the Dark Sovereign shimmered as the corruption continued to torment her. Suddenly, dozens of Dark Spheres blinked into existence, vibrating with uncontrollable fury. High above, the Celestial Fortress shuddered threateningly; this was the most power the Dark Sovereign had used in a long time and the concentration needed was immense.
'How dare you!' Syndra howled, eyes shooting wide. Her eyes glowed a mesmerizing purple as the spheres threw themselves upwards towards the roof, dashing themselves against the corruption. The ones that missed simply shattered through the roof, sending shards of rock down. The majority of the Spheres hit their mark, however, and Syndra ripped herself free from the corruption's clutches.
She took a shuddering breath, recovering, and returned her eyes to the ceiling. Dark Spheres instantly materialized around her, spinning around her in a dangerously fast orbit. All her attention was on the corruption and in that moment she was vulnerable to the Arrow of Retribution, forgotten in the midst.
"A legion couldn't stop me; what chance do you have?"

The roof of the temple shuttered as Syndra's orb's crashed though it. She was remarkably strong willed to fight through the visions of the corruption, but now she threatened to tear the whole temple down.
Panic and rushing would not avail him. His actions here had to be thought out and controlled. He calm walked into the temple, crossing pass the frenzied mage towards an alter on the other side. He took a handful of herbs from it and tossed them into a brazier in the room.
A strong aroma began to fill the air. The herb was one that he had used in the rite of sealing for the pit. In small doses, it calmed and relaxed the mind, but in much larger ones, it could numb or even blank the mind, causing them to collapse. He had grown accustomed to using it in his duty as warden, so it would not effect him as much as it would Syndra. He needed to clam her at the very least. Worse case it would render her unconscious, which would be even better.
But he would also need to contain the pit. Her magic and show of force had excited it and it was no eager to claim it. The chant used to seal it flowed from his mouth like water, a prayer he had said several times a day since he began his vigilance. Seals in the stone of the floor began to glow around the stone disc, replacing what little she had moved and firmly shutting it. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The corruption made a laughing noise as her spheres ripped though it. Even though they tore through, it showed no sign of pain. The mass reared up and attempted to approach her again, but it was then held back. An unseen force began to pull the blackness back into the pit. The corruption screamed in frustration as it tried to seize Syndra again, but it failed to do so before being forced back into the pit.

Syndra didn't even notice Varus walk pass her. The Dark Sovereign was too caught up in a war of wills with the corruption. It was so distinctly unlike anything from Runeterra, and the visions it planted in her head threatened to break her will.
But then Varus began chanting and the corruption lessened its grip on Syndra's mind. Her head whipped back and she gasped as the corruption's grip clawed at her mind as it was forcibly removed. She shuddered as the last of the infernal mass leaked back into the pit. She blinked; her eyes watered...from tears or from the herbs, she did not know.
But then the smell of the herbs assaulted her and the Dark Sovereign staggered back, still reeling from the encounter with the corruption. Her knees gave out and Syndra collapsed. In that moment, she was no longer the impervious sorceress hellbent on destroying Ionia's Elders. In that moment, she was simply a young woman, unsure of her powers and scared of everything that was out of her control. With a weary glance upwards at Varus, Syndra's lips twitched. And then she slumped down, succumbing to the dosage that now embalmed the air.
---
Outside, the Celestial Fortress shook as Syndra went unconscious. Even in her sleep, the Dark Sovereign kept a minuscule amount of concentration onto the flying fortress. But now there was no support. Without even a groan, the mighty building dropped from the skies, hurtling down into the forest floor near the temple, missing it by several leagues. The echo of the tress snapping could be heard even in the Temple of Pallas. The ground shook and a thin film of dust rose up from the ground.

The fortress landed outside with a mighty crash, shaking the ground with great force.
Varus steadied himself from the shock wave. He grimaced after the land settled. This would bring unwanted attention his way. Placidum would investigate, maybe even the Institute. Both things he would rather not deal with.
He looked at the unconscious sorceress on the floor. She looked nothing like herself, almost pathetic looking as a miserable heap on the floor. He could kill her now if he wanted, he knew she was dangerous, a threat to Ionia and maybe even the world. He draw his bow, intent to shoot her, when he saw what looked like tears in her eye. Tears of a child to him.
He hesitated. Images of Theshan running to him, tears spilling cause of a skinned knee.
He lowered his weapon, unable to bring himself to do it. He gingery picked her up bridal style and carried her out of the temple. He laid her down on the small bedding that he used and left her there to recover.

When Syndra came to, it was not a pleasant experience. Her head was throbbing and her throat was sore. It took her a minute to realize that the bedding was not hers. With a gasp, she wrenched her eyes open and looked around, drawing upon her powers at the same time. A Dark Sphere materialized shakily before wobbling into nonexistence once more.
She was in a simple room, obviously a bedroom. It was dark, except for the light that flickered through the small window across from her. Syndra looked around warily, unable to remember what had happened. Then, it hit her. The corruption. Her breath caught in her throat as she clutched at her heart, where the corruption's cold touch had molested. She felt tainted by the alien nature of the unearthly substance. Quickly now, she crept out of the bed, only to fall down when her legs gave up on her. It had been many years since she ever...walked. Pain blossomed in bright spots in front of her eyes as she gripped the edge of the bed, tears threatening to spill. She was so weak; how many days had gone by since she was unconscious?
Unsteadily, she brought herself up into an upright stance, holding onto a plain table for support. Taking a deep breath she leaned against the table, trying to regain her composure.
"A legion couldn't stop me; what chance do you have?"

Varus entered his hovel, a freshly caught rabbit in his hands. He saw the awaken Sovereign, trying to stand. He wanted to yell at her, call her a bloody arrogant fool for trying to harness something much stronger than her. Instead he walked to her side and put her arm around his shoulders, giving her support.
"Easy now." he told her. "You are still weak. You've been out for almost a day." he explained to her as he helped her over to the bed. "Keep resting. I'll have something prepared soon."

Syndra considered struggling but she was in no condition to resist. Grudgingly, she allowed the archer to lead her back to the bed. If he had wanted to, he could have easily killed her while she was unconscious--or perhaps worse, bring her back to the Elders.
Syndra leaned against the wall, resting. She knew little of Varus' story, and even less about his current motivations. She stirred, trying to decide what one of her only allies would want her to do.
She spoke up. 'Can't it be destroyed?' she muttered, voice rasping slightly. 'The corruption?' The Dark Sovereign knew that the corruption had played with her; it was more powerful than she had expected. It frightened her.
"A legion couldn't stop me; what chance do you have?"

Varus grabbed a bow and some arrows off the wall. Hunting game with his corrupted bow would only serve to infect the food, something he was sure neither he nor Syndra wanted.
"If we could of destroyed it, we would of a long time ago." he replied grimy. "It is something incredibly old...from another world." He knew more about it than any other person ever had. It was apart of him now, it's memories were with his. "It was sent here as a punishment, banished from it's home, never to return. It came here when the land was still young. The Ionia's of that time didn't know what to do with it. They couldn't kill it, so they contained it."
"And we keep it contained." he said as he slung the quiver over his shoulder. "You are right to fear it. It plays off your feelings and memories. It makes thralls of the weak willed." He turned to leave for the outside. "You are best to avoid it from now. It's been in your head and can get to you more effectively. Lay down and rest, I will return soon."

Syndra watched as Varus left, listening for the sound of the door closing before she moved. She had a close connection with the Celestial Fortress and it worried her now that she could not locate it. Of course, there was nothing of personal value that Syndra could remember, but the fortress had been her home for many years.
Clenching her fist, the Dark Sovereign played with the corner of the thin sheets. It would be best to regain her strength before leaving. But to where? She blinked, looking down at her hands. Perhaps to the Order of the Shadow, where her closest ally laid. She pursed her lips; they had not met in a while and it bothered her that she would have to show up in such a weakened state.
Eventually, the Dark Sovereign's eyelids drooped, and she succumbed to sleep as all mortals must. When she woke groggily with no idea how much time had passed, Syndra stirred, looking around the room.
"A legion couldn't stop me; what chance do you have?"

His arrow flew true, striking the rabbit in the head. Varus picked the small animal off the ground, his third one. He did not know how much Syndra would eat, but he did not. The corruption had altered his body, making him no longer needing to eat or drink.
He returned to his hovel, the Sovereign asleep in his small cot. He began skinning the rabbits, shedding their furs and skewering them to cook over a fire. He glanced over to her, still sleeping. He knew this was going to cause trouble. Part of him felt like he should kill her right there. She was a menace, a threat to Ionia. Slitting her throat there would bring a premature end to the Dark Sovereign.
But he did not. For inside, he knew she was no more than a child, a lonely one seeking the one thing she had left. Power. He grunted as the shook the dark thoughts from his mind, setting the rabbits over the fire. The smell of cooking meat filled the small shack.
Seeing no better time, Varus dozed off himself. He required little sleep, no more than 3 hours and that was being generous to himself. Luckily for him, it was the rare dreamless sleep, one that wasn't full of burning buildings and corpses.
He snapped to conciousness when he heard her move above. He shook the sleepiness off him, standing to greet her. The meat had been cooked, somewhat burned, but not too badly. "You should eat. I can get you water too if you want some." he said rather gruffly.
