Abilities
Maligen has the ability to take life force (aka chi/life energy, etc) away and add it to his own. Later he may discover that he can give back this energy. This ability is controlled by breath and only applicable in melee range. (Maligen must be touching the object in question and be able to breathe on the target.) If roleplay allows, he may discover the full range of his abilities, as listed below.
Take Life:
- Maligen grabs ahold of the victim and sucks their breath from their lungs from the mouth. (Sort of like a dementor from Harry Potter.)
- Victims of this ability may find it easier to resist the more willful/stronger they are. Likewise, this ability is far more effective against someone who has a weaker will or is simply in no condition to fight back (no resistance).
- When used, the victim may feel exhausted or extremely tired.
- If he has an abnormally excessive amount of life force, his life expectancy will increase and his body will slow down the aging process. In addition, he gains higher natural regenerative properties, though this cannot regrow limbs or any parts. Simply put, his natural HP5 is at a greater rate than most and has a quicker recovery time than others, though this does not mean he can live through a fatal wound if proper medical attention is not received.
- Note that although his general life expectancy is extended, this does not mean his immune to damage nor mistreatment/malnourishment.
Give life:
- If life force is expended, his body will age and the regenerative process will slow down as well. His recovery time will be longer, and his body will also become more susceptible to diseases.
- If he breathes life into an inanimate object (paper cranes, robot pets), the object becomes an extension of himself, sort of like a prosthetic limb. It also has the potential to become a 'daemon' - a carrier of part of his soul/life force. (See below for more info.)
- If using ‘give life’ on a person who is already living, will gain the regenerative benefit and increase their life expectancy, but Maligen cannot control them in any way. As he is still young and does not have practice with this, this ability probably will not be available until later on (again, if roleplay allows). Also note, like with Maligen, the regenerative benefit will not save another character from mortal wounds, diseases, or poisons.
Daemons*:
In League terms, daemons are wards. That being said, Maligen only senses if something is nearby, though not all of them grant a field of vision. Only daemons with actual working parts that can be used as sight (robots/golems) will grant Maligen vision.
There are three levels of life force Maligen can give to an inanimate object based on size: small, medium, and large. Life force typically stays in the object until Maligen drains it back or it is destroyed.
- Small is anything that he can hold in his hands with little trouble, typically under a pound (small pebbles, hairpins, maybe a thin t-shirt). The health/life force cost is not very much. They also grant the smallest ‘ward’ coverage, only 1 foot in diameter.
- Medium is somewhat bigger than that and under a couple of pounds (backpack, small sapling, heavy coats). ‘Ward’ range is a little wider, up to a 3ft diameter. If destroyed, Maligen may become disorientated or undergo shock.
- Large is anything bigger than this or simply extremely complicated (machinery, large trees, boulders, dog-sized robots) and require a high life force/health cost. He can only have one of these at a time. ‘Ward’ range is 6ft in diameter in addition to any sight mechanics the shell may have (ie if is a robot with vision). If killed, the painful experience of losing a large part of himself may render Maligen unconscious or trigger a panic attack. For this reason, it is dangerous to send a large daemon into battle. If killed, Maligen will need to recover for a period of months before even considering finding another suitable Large Daemon**.
- Anything larger than a car is simply not doable without risking his life.
- He can sense everything a daemon does: another person walking by, elements (natural or unnatural), and even its death. If the object/daemon is killed or its time is up, that portion of his life force is lost forever.
- The natural life span of a daemon is equal to how much life force Maligen spends to bring it to life.
- Whenever his life force is infused with an object, it feels warm to the touch.
- he can only realistically have a total of 3 daemons out a time, depending on the size. Too many daemons out would be confusing and cause a delay in reaction from Maligen. It may also cause him to become confused and not be able to tell where his real body is, so it’s important to only have out as much as he needs.
- Maligen always knows the general direction of his daemons (though not always exact location), as they are part of himself. Likewise, his daemons can be caught and magically traced back to Maligen.
- It is plausible that if Maligen sacrifices his entire life force, that he can bring back to life a recently deceased living being (provided the physical form was not dismembered or otherwise destroyed) however there is no evidence to support this.
*”Daemon” is a term I’ve borrowed from The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials Trilogy) for simplicity’s sake.
**Because of the risk of daemon usage, Maligen typically uses them defensively and away from harm as much as possible.

Family: Richard Moretti (Father, unknown status), Minci Moretti (Mother, unknown status), Myrth Moretti (sister, deceased). Doctor Hotchpock (head Zaunite researcher who experimented on him, status unknown), Quism Tiesa (one of Hotchpock's assistants, deceased)
Description:
At about 4'10”, Maligen is rather thin and scrawny. Though he appears about 12~13 years of age, he is actually older by a few years. He has pale green-tinted skin, golden brown eyes and with extremely short black hair. Perhaps most notable however is his constant haunting, dead look. When not wearing restraints or tied to tables, he typically prefers conservative clothing to hide the various “features” the Zaunites had given him during his “stay” in one of their research labs.
Multiple scars exist on Maligen’s torso where Zaunites had experimented on him: long scars where they tried to expand his lungs but failed; marks along his arms, hands, and mouth; faint needle marks in various places on his body; and marks where the restraints were too tight.
If wearing clothes, typical outfit would consist of a long hooded cape with muted colors. Hood up, long robes, gloves, mask/scarf to cover up the face, and soft boots. Especially fond of hoods, hats, and shades so he does not have to make eye contact. A loner, Maligen will try to ‘disappear’ in crowds if he can, so will never dress up for anything fancy unless absolutely required.
Biography:
Childhood:
The Moretti family was fairly well off, at least enough to buy a decent-sized home along with employing some stewards/man servants to attend to their home. Accomplished and powerful battlemages, the two were often called away to serve in the Noxian army, leaving their two children to be housesat by their servants/nannies.
Born as Maligen Moretti, Maligen was brother to Myrth Moretti, his twin sister. Competition was heavily encouraged in the Moretti household, and as a result both siblings rapidly began to grow in strength, intelligence, potential, and skill. By the time they were young children, both had learned that like their parents, that they also had powerful magic potential. Soon they began extensively training to control their powers as well as martial combat.
Maligen learned he could take life away by 'breathing in' the life essence of a living creature. He also learned that he could also feel the last moments of that creature's life pouring into his own body while he did this. Practicing on small creatures like insects and worms, he eventually switched focus to larger targets when his parents brought home "pets" from the market.
Myrth developed the ability to force her will on others, by a mix of hypnosis and charismatic manipulation. By staring into a person's eyes, if the participant was willing enough, she could make suggestions/force her will on another person to influence their actions for a couple of minutes. Myrth became more progressive as she practiced her powers on the servants and occasionally the slaves her parents bought from the market for her to specifically practice on.
Though they competed a lot, Maligen could not truly muster up the courage to fight or compete with his sister. He often tried to make up excuses to get out of it, however Myrth would drag him into each activity. He eventually realized why he didn't want to fight with her. On the contrary, he didn’t have a true competitive streak in his body. Strength, routine, and occasionally discipline just weren’t things Maligen was interested in. Instead, he’d sneak into the kitchen at times watching the servants cook, clean, and sometimes when he was able to, he would help with the laundry.
When his parents came home with beautiful garments for his sister, he stifled the feeling of envy in his heart. He overheard how the female servants would talk to each other - not with curtness or sternness in their voices, but a softer tone. At times he wished he was a servant, though certainly didn’t envy their position.
One day, when his parents were absent and his sister was scheduled to visit their aunt, he snuck into her room to look at her things. Unable to resist, he put on some of her clothes. The quality of the fabric, the beautiful patterns, and the way they moved when he did was certainly mesmerizing. For once he couldn’t help but to feel like his true self for the first time. He repeated this a few more times until his sister finally caught him in the act. She promised not to tell, much to his relief.
A few months after the discovery, Maligen woke to his sister laughing with a wide and wicked grin on her face. She had willed her brother and forced him to put on some of her clothes in front of some servants. Horrified, he watched as his sister laughed and called him a woman. For many months, Myrth continued to put her brother in her clothing and did thus several times in front of their parents. Each time Maligen was punished and Myrth honored. Ultimately Maligen felt utter shame and disgust with each time, but he couldn’t help himself.
Early Teens:
Finally, when they were 13, Maligen mustered up the courage to ask Myrth to stop controlling him all the time. She confessed it was to humiliate him, since he did not fight with her like he used to before. She did this to make him a better soldier, to ‘man up’. Using a mix of her words and abilities, she baited him into a fight. Fueled by rage and anger, they yelled at each other between punches and kicks. Finally Maligen gained the upper hand and pinned his sister to the floor. Taunting him, she says he's not even enough of a man to use her powers against her. Enranged, he began draining her of her life energy.
Realizing he was perhaps far too angry for her to control, she quickly confessed another truth: that she used her powers to help him get the feeling he wanted: to be a girl while wearing her clothing. She told him she had noticed that the servants were no mere servants; they were in fact spies for her parents, employed by them to keep watch over their investments to make sure they were not weak. She knew this since she had been influencing one and found out by mistake. She had wanted to tell him this. She progressed so much more quickly than him was because she had been using her powers on herself, to disguise the fact that she loved her brother and disliked the punishments he had received. So she had hidden her true self.
Knowing her sister as a liar and manipulator, he refused this truth. A servant walks in at this critical time. The shock of seeing a so-called spy breaks his concentration, and he accidentally kills his sister. He could feel her die. The last moments of her life rushes in. Realizing in his horror what he had done, he tries to resuscitate his sister but fails. He had only learned how to take life at this point, but did not know how to give life back.
The servant immediately reported the death to their parents. They arrived promptly. His mother, furious, proceeded to beat him within an inch of his life, however his father intervened before she could finish him off. His father respected his son's power, and knew it could be an asset to the Noxian army if properly trained.
Unfortunately for the Moretti family, their son slowly became driven insane by guilt. Writhing in nightmares and sleepless nights, he ceased eating or talking, eventually growing silent after Myrth's funeral. They brought him to scientists to find out what was wrong with him. Forcing him to ingest a truth syrum, out it spilled: The horrible truth. How he hid his shameful desires to dress as a girl, how his sister caught him, and how his sister had also known about the servant spies. Realizing that now he was now a waste of space, the Morettis were tempted to kill him however decided upon an an alternative option: sell him off as a potential test subject to a Zaunite trader in the marketplace and erase all memory of him from their records. "If the Zaunites succeeded, and most likely they would, then the Morettis would receive a weapon better than anything they could have imagined."
The Zaunites:
Doctor Hotchpock was tasked with Maligen’s hopefully magnificent rebirth as a true Noxian. Knowing he was dangerous, he had Maligen placed under the Highly Dangerous section of their lab, sticking him in a giant tube hooked to drips and gauges. At least two guards were posted at his chamber at all times. A mask was placed over his face for air. Various experimental chemicals were used to manipulate his body, including doses of epinephrine to increase aggressive activity in an otherwise fairly passive test subject.
For nearly three years, researchers ran a variety of experiments on him. Occasionally they would take him out and perform life-threatening tests to get him to use his powers again to study how he did it. After realizing that he was only dangerous with his breath, they cut their budget by simplifying his restraints and added a gasmask-like device on his head to control his ability. They used the budget that they saved in attempt to modify his body drastically however found a majority of their surgeries had set backs and were forced to revert back to his original human form.
Overtime, the researchers managed to get Maligen to kill again, though only with creatures and never with anything humanoid. And definitely not with anything female. Though the entire process, Maligen learned that he was a monster, something to be caged and studied. Such was the price to pay for having desires frowned upon by his parents.
Eventually, the Zaunites had finally prepped Maligen enough for a field test. Moving outside of Zaun and into the neighboring twisted landscape, a large area was secured and set up. Marking live targets that were sent out, Maligen was set with a simple task. Find and kill the targets, or else the punishment was an unknown amount of time in the torture chamber. Not terribly interested in the ‘unknown’ part of the punishment, Maligen proceeded to carry out his task.
Unfortunately for the Zaunites, their party was crashed by a Piltover Patrol force that had been scouting the area. Also unfortunate for the Zaunites, this force all donned headgear to defend themselves against the pollution and other dangerous chemicals that Zaun employed, something that Maligen was not effective against. A struggle ensued. The Piltoverian force captured Maligen and inevitably killed a few Zaunite researchers/assistants. Doctor Hotchpock, however, earned a hasty escape along with a majority of his notes.
Transferred to a high-security Piltover lab, Maligen awaits his fate.
Long Term Objective:
Being a test subject, Maligen doesn’t exactly have any life goals at the moment. To eventually retire into a peaceful life would be ideal, however at the moment Maligen is sort of tied down. All he knows is that he is a monster, a warrior for Noxus, however feels great shame and guilt over the people and living things he has killed.
In the short and long term, avoiding Noxus or being found out by anyone in Noxus would be ideal. Maligen has no interest in combat situations, however in the world of Runeterra having no defenses whatsoever can mean death.
Maligen isn’t exactly a team player. Being stuck in a lab as a test subject for some time, he doesn’t relate to others very well and typically sees others as foreign and strange, choosing to distance himself as much as possible. That being said, he doesn’t like being idle. As a born Noxian, he still believes that the strong survive. As someone who isn’t terribly strong initially, he still wishes to prove himself in some way. He may later wish to participate in lone missions as a scout, spy, or low-risk recon work. He also may, in the future, consider working as a double-agent if contacted and promised recognition by Noxus.
Additional Notes:
- need an Ionian character to teach Maligen how to control his abilities - by taichi/breath exercises. At this point Maligen does not know how to give life, so these exercises would be crucial to character development. It would also be ideal to learn origami as a way of relaxation and potential scouts.
- working with Arren Kelvess for potential plot fuel.
- Maligen is a potentially transgender/transexual/gender fluid character, and I would like to eventually transition this character into her transwoman identity, Jevel, in the future.
