The Crystal Scar stands quiet tonight, its nexuses humming softly, pulsing purple over the broken land. Magic is in the air: a static charge, the subtle fetid scent of power. Though the field itself is walled off by jagged peaks, domed by a glowing forcefield, the land around is traversable, though rough, marred by unchecked magics and greed for the bounty of the earth.
South of the Scar, a path leads out of the once-quaint town, now somewhat rugged from disuse. And barely a mile out from the ruins of Kalamanda, the path breaks--the very ground breaks. A chasm, five meters wide and at least fifty in length, casts an eerie light upon the untamed landscape.
To stand upon the ledge, to peer down into the abyss, would shake a mortal heart. There is no floor in sight, only the endless, twisting patterns of faintly glowing purple crystals. Only mystery. Only the temptation to venture closer, to discover the secrets of this unknown world beneath the world...

After a long journey, the Institute's wooden caravan stopped near the Rift's entrance. It would have taken the travelers further if it could; but the ground there was not kind to vehicles.
The summoner stepped down and peered into the chasm. Well, here we are. Now let's see what all this fuss is about.

February 25, 23 CLE
By night the undulating glow of the crystal scar shown through the waist-high grass. A static movement ushered in the breeze, made the skins of those approaching prickle. Cricket chirps echoed in the canyon. Behind the caravan, the now-closed namesake arena of this land stood silent but for the quiet hum of nexuses, sealed beneath a transparent dome.
Some helping hands began to unload their passengers' technological cargo. Meters and scopes, radars and sensor plates. Climbing equipment. The canyon before them was a sheer drop with no basin in sight: an chasm of purple crystals. There were landings and twisting paths, but the explorers would need to harness themselves and affix ropes to the surface before they dropped into the abyss.

A massive groan sounded and the earth shook. The rumbling was not enough to remove Nulla from the cliff, but it could set him ill at ease.
Suddenly many feet below the summoner, a chunk of the chasm's wall exploded outward. Earth was scattered but through the earthy brown cloud a flash of purple. As the dirt settled, the ten foot tall hole was revealed and two crystalline rocks rotated slightly back and forth...as if examining the same chasm as the summoner.
After a through examination from this position, Skarner fully revealed himself as he skittered down and around the hole he had created, climbing up to greet the summoner to Kalamanda, his crystal feet punching holes a full foot into the walls of the chasm.
When Skarner reached the surface, he gave a polite nod, as he had seen many humans do as a sign of greeting and respect.
"Greetings, Summoner. Are you here as the Institute of War's agent regarding the matter of the odd energy here?" Skarner said in a deep and guttural tone, but respectful of the man, as he was aware the League would never send an average summoner to investigate this matter.
As the summoners and Skarner spoke amongst themselves, a lone traveler began to approach the rift in the earth, clearly ignoring the warning signs posted well away from the rift itself. The stranger was garbed in green and browns, and bore a walking staff in his right hand. All in all, he was unremarkable, save for his eyes: His eyes spoke of untold inteligence, and gleamed a fiery orange-gold.
The traveler ignored the Brackern and the summoners, taking a seat several feet away from them as he began to meditate.

The elder summoner stuck his cane into the ground and firmly held onto it, trying to not fall down. due to the sudden tremors. As soon as he catched a glimpse of Skarner's crystalline hide, the summoner wiped the sweat off his brow with his right forearm and politely nodded to him in return.
Yes, I am. Now, if you would be so kind as to wait for the Rogue Mage, we'll be set to go.

Ryze took off from the caravan, carrying a medium sized pack of equipment he dared not let anyone else touch and his priceless scroll. He wore average cotton pants, leather boots, a white cloth undershirt that left his whole arms uncovered, revealing his blue skin and purple marking.
He approached the Brackern champion, Skarner, and the summoner who he accompanied Nulla.
"I am here." He said, stretching. "Greetings, Skarner. And I'm sorry for the holdup. I took my time gathering my tools."

As if in response to the party’s arrival, the rift itself seemed to awaken. The dull purple light of the cavern flared brilliantly with arcane power as the arcane power arced between the jagged apex of two crystalline formations. Those sensitive to the magic of the earth would be staggered by the raw magnitude of the energy released, while a hint of malice might be enough to give them second thoughts about the nature of their journey.
The summoners studying the rift however, remained unphased. The team’s young leader, adorned in the platinum-trim robe befitting his rank, finished tying the final knot about a jutting stone anchor, trusting the lives of such important guests to no other. He broke the silence while examining his own work with a critical eye, “And that is why you've been called for. Spikes of magical energy unlike anything we've seen on Runeterra have ripped this chasm into the earth. So close the the Field of Justice, however, it’s impossible to get any good readings of the world’s magical energies that are causing this.” He walked toward the Rift with ropes bundled in his arms and summarily threw two lines into the depths. “To understand what’s going on here, we will have to take readings from the very depths of this chasm.” For the first time he peered over the precipice. “None of our equipment has survived long enough tell us what is down there. We have no way of knowing until we arrive ourselves.”

The elder summoner unpacked a harness and tightly wrapped it around his chest. He slowly pulled up one of the ropes the summoner had just thrown and firmly tied a hook on the end, which in turn was attached to a metallic ring in the front part of his harness. Jeweled staff in one hand and rope on the other, Nulla approached the cliff, staring into the depths. ... Very well. The sooner we get this started, the earlier we'll be back at the Institute.

As Daegorath sat, cross-legged in his human form, just behind the chasm's edge, he thought he could hear the faint din of talking. Humans, likely. Mages, even moreso. All children undeserving of their gifts. No matter; he was doing them a service, taking the cast-off magic of this place into himself. The magical polution was old, and would take an extensively long time to cleanse, but, little by little, this realm would be whole again.
Daegorath continued to simply sit, content in his meditative state while the magic of the Rift seemed to swirl about and into him. Should he not be bothered, he would not feel a need to rise from his cross-legged position in the least. Leave the children to their exploration; what would he appear to them but one of their own?

Skarner greeted the Thorn Mage with a nod. He was about to skitter down the cliff when the 'tremor' hit, thus causing Skarner to turn and growl. The earth was being violated by this energy. However, he resisted the urge to rush down and find this....attacker and put them down. Leaving his allies to engage an unknown foe would be dangerous would be foolish.
Turning around lead Skarner's eyes towards a speck that was not there earlier. Skarner knew this land very well. Above and below. That speck should not be there...and it appeared green.
"Summoner, there is something on the surface across the Rift from us. I am going to investigate. Be wary. I have not scouted the entire rift. I advise you to proceed slowly until my return." Skarner told the summoner rappelling down. The feat of rappelling interested Skarner. Humans proved to be ingenious creatures. Dangerously so at times.
Skarner turned to the Thorn Mage. "Ryze, do you wish to escort the summoners or come with me?"

Ryze felt the magic flaring through the chasm as it blazed in violet light. He grimaced and took a better ground. The amount of magic that coursed through the rift was enough to stagger him. He closed his eyes and regained his breath quickly before paying attention to Nulla's comment.
About to take a rope himself to rappel down, Skarner issued him a question. His mind started working. The new-found "thing" that the Brackern spotted might be the cause of the violation. It interested him more and in any case, he will return after accompanying Skarner.
"You say there is something different in the horizon? Yes... Perhaps it would be wise if I shall accompany you to it. I shall rejoin with the summoners later." He responded to Skarner.
He then turned to Nulla. "Unless of course, you deem my presence to be important during the descend."
The burst of energy still worried him. The thought of what could release such a burst of magic, concerned him even more.

The lead summoner glanced upwards at the Crystal Vanguard’s warning, noting a new figure on the cusp of the chasm. He frowned, wondering why such a stranger would be worthy of note, “This land was once the home to many, chased off by the politics of the Kalamanda incident. No doubt this traveler is shocked at the fissure that has swallowed his home.” He appraised the Brackern’s appearance, stroking his chin thoughtfully, “If you feel you must go, then do so swiftly, but consider how your form might affect one who has never heard of your kind, and has happened upon this chasm of crystals not unlike your own body where his home once stood.”
His frown deepened further as Ryze also indicated his intent to greet the lone figure. “You both saw the outbursts of energy that we face... Bah!” He brushed them off with an annoyed wave. “We’ve waited this long, why not a little longer." He turned his back mumbling under his breath, "Of all the champions... Just don’t get yourselves into trouble for being crystalline and blue!”

The elder shut his eyes and rubbed the bridge of his nose. Do whatever you must, but make it snappy. He waved his hand, dismissing the two. I'll start the descent - you two should have no trouble catching up to me.
Carefully, Nulla would start to climb down the ledge, making sure to step on the cliff's protrusions and to tightly hang onto the rope.

"Summoner, I will deal with this matter swiftly." Skarner said with a nod. He did not want to be on the surface if the summoners found something in the rift...especially if it was a Brackern crystal.
He pushed that thought out of his mind. Skarner had used most of his spare time out of the League tracking down such crystals and memorizing their locations. Thus, he would be able to patrol these areas. This area of land was not one of those areas and thus the summoners should find no such artifact.
He gave Ryze a glance. He was not going to waste anytime and humans had proved sluggish compared to his people once they had fused with the Arachia, especially when they summoned their exoskeleton. Ryze was athletic looking compared to most mages, but the Thorn Mage bore the form of a human if not the magical capacity.
"Ryze, leap onto my back and hold fast. There is no way you can keep pace with me." Skarner said with an slight edge to his voice, his mind shifting to a protective mentality. Skarner knew the summoner was likely correct, but none encroached on Brackern lands without permission. This was the law of his people and he was their Vanguard.
