"I understand." He said with a nod, approaching to climb on the Brackern's back. "We should finish it swiftly. As powerful as summoners are, they need us down there and I dare not think about what made that outburst of energy."
In his mind, Ryze couldn't help but feeling a slight itch as he climbed the Brackern's back, careful to minimize any discomfort to Skarner. Having no place to hold to, he held the two spikes that rested just before Skarner's neck. Ryze himself felt uncomfortable about it.

As Ryze settled, Skarner started off away from the chasm. After five meters, he turned around and charged forth faster than a racing stallion. Right at the edge of the chasm, Skarner leapt from the side with the summoners and landed on the opposite wall, legs first with a echoing crash. Dust and graveled stone cascaded down into the rift. Skarner growled as he began the ascent, trying to build momentum while fighting gravity and his own mass.
The climbing started slow, but he steadily gained speed and reached the surface at his normal speed. They approached the green robed man and Skarner was about to approach and physically lock down, but the man was too arrogant and the air around him was....wrong.... Some manner of magic appeared afoot.
"Human, this is the land of the Brackern, and you have come unbidden. State your purpose or leave." Skarner said with a growl, not paying any attention to whether Ryze had survived the leap or had stayed on his back or had gotten off on the surface. Skarner had never let anyone ride him and as such, these thoughts were not naturally occurring to him at this moment.
Daegorath raised an eyebrow as he heard the sound of crystal on crystal, first a resounding crash and then several smaller clacks slowly approaching him. Humans and their folly... Just like children, always prone to destroy what they come across. The dragon chose to ignore the noises. As long as his absorption process was not interrupted, all would be well, and he would have no reason to-
As if he had thought too soon, He was addressed by a very inhuman voice. The very audacious voice demanded that he state his intentions or leave...And, if but to add insults to injury, The voice referred to him as a human. Daegorath sighed slightly. It was not as if they knew any better... His human disguise was all but perfect.
As Daegorath turned his head to greet the humans who had disturbed him, he found that, much to his surprise, those who had interrupted him were not, in fact, very human at all. The first was nearly more magic than man, bearing winding tattoos that coursed with arcane energy. The other was even further from human than the first...It gave Daegorath a moment's pause, before he spoke under his breath. "What manner of sorcery is this? Had not the Brackern died off centuries ago...?" He murmured, before making his formal address. "Greetings, Human, Brackern. A pleasure to see you. At the moment, I would rather not interrupt my business, but if you give me only an hour more it shall be concluded." He blinked his amber eyes briefly, waiting for the Brackern's response. "I should note that my current state is...Rather fragile. I would certainly recommend you do not interrupt me by force.
Both Skarner and Ryze, the latter moreso than the former, would notice that the human sitting upon the rift was drawing its energy into himself, siphoning off a portion of the excess radiation into some hidden reserve of energy. Ryze could clearly tell that disturbing the process would be a very, very bad idea indeed, likely with catastrophic results.

Ryze barely managed to hold on to Skarner, who was rushing like a frenzied horse. As Skarner climbed, Ryze slipped on his exterior and barely managed to catch the tail, holding on it, quickly climbing up as Skarner returned to leveled ground. As action packed as the short ride was, he couldn't help but feel the rather large amount of magic rushed towards the figure. He took off from Skarner as they arrived and immediately felt that any interruption of the process would be a very bad idea.
"Stranger, you're trespassing in Brackern land. Identify yourself immediately and state the cause of your intervention. As much as I do not find it smart to interrupt you, it can also not go unnoticed. I also do not think that my Brackern ally here would let anyone just walk into here and interfere with the already delicate magical foundations here."
He then said, more quietly, to Skarner. "I do not think it will be smart to stop the channel. It can yield dangerous results."

Skarner grew wary. This human...no fear....the body language was wrong, even for a human. Most humans would be defensive around him, setting up a barrier or to have fear in their voice. No...this one was completely at ease. Something was wrong... There was only a brief moment of confusion in this weird human....mumbled words....Skarner couldn't make them out...but this...beast's eyes lingered on Skarner before the man spoke up.
However, Skarner was not able to investigate this curiosity as he would want. The Rift was behind him and needed cleared. The summoners depended on him for protection and guidance, which moved Skarner towards haste and that lead to risks. Not a path Skarner wanted to be on. However, Ryze's quiet words of caution reminded Skarner of the man's existence. A solution appeared.
"Ryze, this is no human. No human would be so careless. Whatever beast this is, it is proud and mighty. Such a beast might try to claim these lands as his. Am I to stand idle as it sits there without the permission of your League or myself to be here, doing some manner of magic that could be the cause of the Rift or at the very least a threat to the dormant Brackern? I must defend my home and my people from any and all trespassers." Skarner growled softly.
"We don't have time to trust this beast. You have one minute, Thorn Mage. After that, I will end this threat to my people in the hope that we can then move on to the Rift."
Daegorath withheld the urge to chuckle as he pretended to not be able to hear the two investigators' discussion. His hearing, alongside his other senses, were far sharper than any normal human. Daegorath smiled slightly. Such were the perks of being an apex predator.
However, the thought of the Brackern thinking that Daegorath was the cause? Not only was it preposterous, but also completely unfounded. Especially now that the Brackern knew he was not human.
Once the two were finished with their brief conversation, Daegorath responded to Ryze's question, smiling slightly as he spoke. "Very well, if you do insist. I am Daegorath, and it is a pleasure to meet the both of you. My purpose here...Could probably be best explained as damage control. You need not fear, Brackern and Magus, for I mean no harm to this place....In fact, further harm is what I wish to prevent." He replied somewhat cryptically, answering their questions without truly resolving their need for information, as Daegorath was not one to reveal such information to them until the time is right.

“I am not a miracle worker my friend. I hope you will consider that the consequences of your actions affect us all.” Ryze rolled Skarners words around in his mind, considering the situation with slow deliberate patience despite the circumstances.
The Bracken had given him less than one minute’s time, failure would result in Skarner breaking the channel and doing so would likely be catastrophic for them all. Never a dull moment, he thought with a sigh.
The mage’s thoughts were broken by the not quite human that was doing the channeling, cold eyes scrutinized the man shaped being as he introduced himself as Daegorath. The name rang ominously in the mage's mind, more so than anything else that had been spoken. Why did it sound so very familiar?
The thorn mage returned the introduction as cautious footsteps brought him closer, “The pleasure is mine entirely friend. I am Ryze and my Brakern friend here is called Skarner.” Reaching the inhuman being’s side, he slipped into a crouch and murmured softly. “I do believe you mean this place no harm. In truth I would much rather study what you’re doing here than stop it for I have never seen it’s equal.”
“However…“ Ryze glanced over to Skarner, shifting his weight to the other foot as he spoke. “…It would seem that my Brakern friend over there takes these things quite seriously. I haven’t enough time to prove your words true, so as much as it pains me, I fear that I must, with the deepest respect, ask you to stop the channel of your own accord.”
There was a momentary pause before the mage added. “I fear that if you do not, he will take matters into his own hands.”

Daegorath nodded slowly as he listened to Ryze's words, otherwise remaining still while he continued the cleansing ritual. He could hardly blame 'Skarner' for his opinions, regardless of how unfounded and illogical they may be. But, if the greater good must be waylaid but briefly to prevent a catastrophe, then so be it.
Daegorath uttered a light sigh of annoyance before he made his reply to Ryze. "Very well...It is, indeed, unfortunate that the cleansing ritual must be cancelled so very soon after it's commencement... but I would much rather have my work delayed than centuries of progress within this land reversed in an act of irrational mistrust." The humanoid furrowed his brow in concentration as the flow of residual magic into his aura slowly came to a halt, although his aura itself still seemed to crackle with the energy he had consumed.
Satisfied that the spell was fully cancelled, Daegorath stood and turned to face both Ryze and Skarner. "As you can see, Skarner of the Brackern, I have complied with your request. I present myself as no threat to you, nor your companions. I am, however, curious as to what brings you to this most desolate - and dangerous - land, a place which, but until recently, has gone untouched by the works of sentient folk for quite some time." In the dragon's memory, 'Recent' was long enough to have included the settlement of Kalamanda and the subsequent opening of the Rift itself....a slight oversight on his behalf, but one which could easily be brushed aside as a lapse in memory, should the need arise.

Skarner skittered forward, giving the Thorn mage a small, thankful nod as he went by. He then turned his focus towards the intruder.
"This Land belongs to the Brackern. I will not tolerate trespassers here. That is all you need to know. Now, begone." Skarner said with a aggressive undertone. "If I catch your scent without leave again, you will not be given the luxury of a warning."
Personally, he didn't want to allow the intruder to leave unescorted, but he had pressing matters to attend to. The summoners need them and there was no way in Runeterra's Grace that he would be escorting a prisoner into the Rift. He would likely need his entire focus in those tunnels.

Recently? How odd. Either this being is very old, or he is quite uninformed. The former seemed far more likely than the latter he decided.
Ryze was just about to answer the questions posed and inquire about what magical technique the strange being had been using when Skarner came forward and began making demands. The mage could only lower his head and wince.
He had hoped that an amicable understanding could be reached. The prospect of studying the rift, as well as what exactly had been going on moments before was a most enticing one for the thorn mage. Much to his dismay however, it seemed that the territorial nature of the Brakern would not allow either one to happen any time soon.
“Perhaps…” the quiet words of the mage were meant only for Skarner, his voice remaining so low as to not be overheard by any normal human ears. “…you could see fit to give him your leave if we only knew more.” he pleaded quietly, though his eyes flickered over to Daegorath at frequent intervals. “If he can indeed cleanse this place as he claims, then is it not worth our time to at least attempt some kind of understanding?” Although his whispered words spoke of peace, the growing aura of power within the being gave Ryze reason enough to be cautious.
The sizzle of magic in the strange man's aura had set the thorn mage's blood racing. At that moment it was clear to Ryze that if this being should decide to attack, they would be outmatched. It would be better then, if the Brackern was angry at him for revealing too much than for him to start a fight they could not win. Ryze shut his eyes for a moment and then without waiting for leave to do so, he gave an answer.
“I am here conducting research on the strange energy that has encompassed this place. My Brakern friend has kindly agreed to give me his leave to do so and act as my escort.” He explained as best he could to Daegorath, careful to avoid any mention of the caravan or the others present. “My goal is to attempt to understand what is happening and perhaps devise a way to help. To be quite honest, it seems to me that we are all on the same side.”

It was not but moments after Daegorath made his reply when the petulant Brackern strode forward and demanded that he leave immediately, all but ignoring his questions. Skarner was beginning to get on Daegorath's nerves...Were not the Brackern of old much kinder - if not at the very least more open to conversation and less prone to interruption - than this little, ill-tempered sand-scorpion? Daegorath held in his frustration, however, the only indication of his mood a slightly elongated breath through his nostrils. It mattered not. He would comply to Skarner's request, for it seems that the creature in question had claimed this land as it's own...He wold not fall to it's pitiful level and threaten others without reason.
Ryze's hushed request to the Brackern, along with his subsequent statements, served to much more adequately sate the dragon's curiosity. Despite his choices in company, the mage seemed to have a head on his shoulders, and at least a modicum of sense stored within it. Still, were humans so forgetful as to not remember what evils they had committed during the days of old, when rune magic was abused to it's fullest extent. With this thought in mind, Daegorath spoke his reply. "Yes, it does appear that the only one holding any hostilities would be your companion...Tell me, exactly what sort of magics do you seek? For there is much cast-away power within this land...arcane waste, results of human ignorance and misuse of the gifts given unto them...."

Skarner was not amused with Ryze's action. He wanted the beast gone from his lands, but here Ryze was trying to get the creature to STAY. Ryze was letting his curiosity get the better of him. Dangerously so.
"If you two wish to discuss magic, then do so later. I do not have time for idle chatter. Every second I stand here, the greater the chance someone attempts to harm my kin or something within the Rift causes destruction and death in this sad land.
Ryze, I have already stated my own distrust of this beast. I am not going to allow him to stay, regardless of his true intentions or your feelings on the matter. Do you allow unknown men to cast unknown magics on your lands in front of you? My kind has suffered enough from those who had nothing to do with us.
As for you, Beast. If your intentions were so pure, you should have sought me out before casting your magics. Now, you have only caused my own anger, due to your own arrogance. I am the protector of my lands. None other share that responsibility. Maybe if you can convince the mage to trust you, we will speak later, but I have promises to fulfill now." Skarner had a slight edge of aggression to his voice, but he tempered that with a willingness to hear the beast out...later. The summoners were in the Rift and Skarner didn't want to be too far away for long in case of natural or magical hazards within.

Ryze listened, nodding his head in silent acknowledgment as Daegorath spoke of the damage caused by misuse of magic. When asked about the power he wished to gain, the thorn mage only shook his head. “All I wish to gain here is an understanding…”
Before he could explain further, his words were cut short by Skarner. The Brackern admonished him for wasting time and then took the liberty of slinging several other insulting notions around. Unknown magics... of course it is unknown. If we KNEW how to fix this we wouldn't be here. Ryze finally decided he had quite enough. “Idle chatter? Hardly. What are we spending precious time here for if not to learn how to repair this damage?”
The mage could hardly hold back his contempt for the situation he was being placed in however he clenched his jaw in an effort to silence himself. There is no use in arguing with him. One cannot out stubborn a Brakern, he reasoned in an attempt to restore some order to his mind.
The thorn mage remained silent, trying to make peace with the idea of letting such knowledge go untill he was sure Skarner was quite finished. Then and only then did he speak, directing his words toward Daegorath alone. “Yes, it is true that humans are infants in comparison to some beings. It is true that we have a history of misusing magic with disastrous results. What child would not burn the house down if given a torch to play with?"
Perhaps, there is another way... the moment the idea came to him, Ryze pulled a scrap of parchment from his bag and began to scribble something down. Inwardly he prayed that this chance encounter would not be a total loss as he continued to speak. “Of course with proper instruction even a child can learn. I am sure you are aware that there are many such places in need of cleansing. It would help immensely if you would be willing to share the technique that you use.”
Finished, Ryze folded the parchment in half and offered it to the stranger as he bid the being farewell. “I regret that we did not have more time to continue this discussion but I sincerely hope that our paths cross again someday.”
He would continue to hold the parchment out for a few moments. If it were not taken he would set it down on a rock nearby.
With a bow to Daegorath and a rather perturbed glare at Skarner, the mage turned away from the two and prepared to take his leave. There was only so much one man could do. Ryze had advised the Brackern to be cautious but if he still wished to take his stand and risk a fight then so be it.

Daegorath sighed, reaching up to gently massage his temples with his right hand as his frustration reached it's peak. It was so tempting to simply crush the insect where it stood...He truly did not know who he was dealing with. All the better that it remained that way. The dragon could not help but shake his head and release a frustrated, yet resigned, chuckle. "Perhaps, O Last Son of the Brackern, I would have sought you out if you would have advertised your existence more sufficiently. Up to this point, I had assumed that the Brackern were asleep or dead - And my memory of your kin was better because of it. You sully what your people have left behind through your obstinate and petulant actions. Perhaps you may serve as a better ambassador for your kind if you were to be less hostile toward any and all who do not tremble before you as serfs before a tyrant king, answering to your beck and call and requiring your permission to as much as breathe the poisoned air where your kin's home once stood, before they retreated underground to whatever fate befell them. In my desire that this not end in conflict - particularly since you cannot be persuaded otherwise - I will leave. Good day, Skarner, Child of the Crystals. I do not believe that we will meet again, at least not anytime soon....And if we do, I hope that you will have pondered my words in the interim. I am finished here."
Daegorath turned his back upon the mewling quim who dared call itself Brackern, but did respond to Ryze's remarks before he took his leave. "I am afraid that no mage amongst men would be able to survive the ritual, for it draws the taint into ones' self to be cleansed by the body...But I would be glad to discuss such matters of the arcane under... better circumstances." Daegorath looked over the scrap of paper, committing the text inscribed upon it's surface to memory before fully turning back toward the way he came and walking off toward the horizon, his back turned upon Skarner as he strode off.

Skarner didn't waste his words on the monster in human form. This beast was blind and arrogant, and that is a terrible combination in a creature as powerful as he. He merely skittered to the edge of the ravine and awaited Ryze.
What the monster offered was bothering Skarner. Cleansing the magical corruption and thus making the land safer. Another step towards awakening his kind. However, he knew he had made the right decision. He couldn't trust the generosity of strangers. With one hand it might take the corruption away, and the other harness that energy and perhaps convert it into something worse. Maybe he would drain the energy out of the dormant brackern. There was no way to know what it intended to do.
Skarner lost his faith in others long ago. The summoners showed potential and a few had started to become almost trust-worthy, but none of them were brackern-friend yet. They may never be.
When Ryze caught up to Skarner, he gave the human a hard gaze. Ryze blindly decided to trust a monster of great magical power. His kind had not suffered as Skarner's had and yet he had the audacity to try to convince Skarner to trust a foreigner.
"Grab hold, Ryze. We have spent too long on the surface." He said, flexing his tail slightly. Next time Skarner was needed to transport someone, he might consider asking for some manner of harness for his passenger. His tail was not meant to be used to grab onto the brackern.
