I ran across this on the forums, and thought I'd share it
It's interesting, and makes sense :3
The character you control is not "Thresh". The lantern he holds is.
Think about it. The lantern is what gathers and stores the souls "Thresh" harvests. Being such a powerful artifact, it stands to reason that the crazy but otherwise ordinary warden that "Thresh" was in life didn't become the demonic thing he is now without some help. Doesn't make much sense that he just sprouted these powers one day, does it?
I think "Thresh" found the lantern, and it possessed him, using him as a vessel for its power. And when "Thresh" dies in game, the lantern decides he wasn't worthy after all, and takes his soul as well.
