"No.. I do not.." Leona replied, shaking her head. "I grew up around a very... technological deprived region, and never really got a chance to delve into the scientific nature of things." Leona then said, hugging her knees to her chest. "It has always interested me though."

Heimerdinger nodded at Leona's response, contemplating another question... when an idea hit him.
Putting the bowl down aside him, he got up, and walked (waddled) his way up to the board, which happened to be facing where Leona and Heimerdinger were on the opposite side of the fire, upon which he took out a board pen and began to draw on the board. Putting up a ladder next to it, he climbed up the ladder so he was level with the gigantic white-board.
"Well, I think it would be a good idea to get you acquainted with the basics, would it not?" Heimerdinger then said in a rather optimistic tone; if he could teach someone who had never even so much as know the definition of science, he would be the one who would remedy that.

Leona blinked, then shrugged; perhaps this would be a good thing. After all, anything to protect others is welcome. "I suppose so, yes." Leona replied, nodding her head and smiling.

Leona shrugged, quite honestly, the word was never mentioned to her until the Solari claimed her. The Rakkor had no need for such words, and never used them. Tapping her chin in thought, she simply nodded before speaking. "Well, from what the Solari told me, science is simply the study of why and how things happen." She replied, pausing for a moment.

Heimerdinger heard Leona's answer, and nodded.
"Well, that's actually a good start... knowing the basic idea of what it is used for: to try to find out why something happens."
"However, Science is a bit more specific than just that: it is not just a study of why an event occurs, but rather, the study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation and experiment."
"In layman's terms: Science is used to determine why things happen through the use of testable explanations and predictions about the real world."
"To illustrate this definition, we will conduct a simple experiment right here," Heimerdinger then suggested, pulling out an apple from his pocket, which he had forgotten to eaten for dinner. He then moved his small arm out, holding out above the ground.
"Now, the question falls to you: what do you think will happen to this apple from the moment I release my grasp on it, and why?"

Leona blinked, tilting her head slightly. She didn't know why he was asking her this obvious question... it insulted her a little. "It will fall, because of gravity." Leona replied, looking from the apple back to him

Heimerdinger raised a small eyebrow at Leona's response; perhaps the Solari did teach a bit more beyond the basics. He decided to see just how much of Classical Physics she knew.
"Well, you are most certainly correct! However, that is, of course, a more basic notion. Let's try another experiment," the Revered Inventor replied, taking one of his heavier wrenches into his other hand and holding it out with the apple in his other hand. He was now holding both objects out in front of him, as if intending to drop them.
"Here's the question: if I drop both of these objects - the wrench, and the apple - which object will hit the ground first, and why?"
Post by The Revered Inventor on Apr 18, 2013 15:14:16 GMT -5
Heimerdinger's expression gave off the smallest hints of a disappointed Yordle: so much for knowing classical physics, he thought to himself.
"Well, the wrench is, indeed, 'heavier,' so to say, than the apple. However, I shall let the experiment itself show what will happen," and with that, he let go of both the apple and the wrench at the same time; both objects fell at the same speed, and appeared to hit the ground at the exact same time.
When both hit the ground, he looked up. "Alas, it appears your hypothesis is not correct this time... so what can be seen from here?"
"It is known that the wrench is heavier and requires more strength to pick up than the apple, yet both objects fell the same distance at the exact same time! There was no change in the thing that caused both objects to fall; the gravity was still the same, acting on both."
"So... would you tenure a guess as to what causes this phenomenon?" Heimerdinger finally asked Leona, slightly tilting his head in expectant of an answer.

Leona paused... looking at the objects and furrowing her brows. She rubbed her chin and simply stared at them, in deep thought. Finally, after about thirty seconds of thinking, she spoke. "Well, the only conclusion I can think is that gravity accelerates all objects at the same speed." She replied, looking back at Heimer.

Heimerdinger gave off his characteristic, affable chuckle upon hearing Leona's answer.
"Well, you've definitely hit the nail right on target, miss!" he exclaimed. "Indeed, regardless of how 'heavy' an object is, it will always fall at the same speed as an object that weighs lighter or heavier. You are indeed quite a learner, Radiant Dawn."
"Now, of course, there's more to it than what can be met by the eye," he continued. "Of course, there are other factors involved in an object than just comparing dropping velocities, but those details go beyond what we will go over, for the sake of time."
"Now, moving on to another topic I would think you would certainly want to know: Mass. Would you kindly tell me what you know of the meaning of the word 'mass,' miss?" Heimerdinger then asked Leona, his expression becoming slightly more focused on her answer.

Leona smiled slightly as the question came up. Actually having taught this herself, Hiemer was indeed right, she could find this useful. While she didn't know too much on the subject, she did know the basic definition. "Mass is the amount of space an object takes up." She replied, giving a curt nod afterwards.

Heimerdinger nodded in response, pleasantly surprised to know Leona was knowledgeable of at least the basis for what he was about to do next.
"Very good; it appears your education was more than adequate! In that case... I believe a test than can be given, using what you currently know... and your intuition," he replied, and with that he proceed to perform quite an act.
Flipping the board to it's side, the jumped on one side until it hit the ground, so it looked like some see-saw. He then took out of his pockets - or, to a viewer, seemingly nowhere - a pair of disks, one appearing larger than the other, and placed them down where he was standing, on the lower edge of the board.
He then took out some odd block, and put it in front of the disks, and from there, picked up his stool over his head, and walked over to the other side of the board, his weight tilting the board the other way. When he reached the now lower side, the disks were sitting at the raised end, only being held up by the block he had put up there earlier.
With that, he put down the stool down next to the ground end of the now horizontal board, and stood upon it, addressing Leona from here.
"Well, the situation here is simple: there are two disks being held up at the higher end, and when the block is removed, both disks will roll down the board."
"Now, it is known that the larger disk has exactly twice the radius of the smaller one; that is to say, it is twice as larger. However, the smaller disk is twice as heavy as the larger one. Of course, gravity is the only force at work here."
"So, the question I pose to you is this: which disk will reach the bottom, and why?"
((Super Kudos if you actually get it right without looking it up. ^-^))

Leona blinked, tilting her head to the side. He had effectively stumped her. "I... honestly haven't a clue." Leona replied, watching the yordle in front of her curiously.
