Name: Dr. Valeria Van Mordenheim
Alias: The Noxian Necromonger
Class: Necromancer
Race: Human
Age: 29
Occupation: M.D., Professor of Necromancy
Residence: Bleak Academy, Noxus
Alignment: Neutral Evil
Abilities:
COMBAT ABILITIES:
Seize the Initiative: Units under Valeria's command have bonus move speed when moving towards enemies or objectives. The living are bolstered by her charisma; the dead, with negative energy.
Rebuke Undead: Since she is unable to extend control over more undead, she may channel negative energy to rebuke undead instead- causing them to cower in ‘fear’. More resilient and intelligent undead are simply slowed. A channel attempt takes longer than normal spell casting, requiring a full turn to complete- all undead within her line of sight up to sixty feet can be rebuked. Rebuking the undead can be usable once every five minutes. (5 turn cooldown.)
Otherwise, Valeria has no significant combat abilities, as much of her Necromancy is a preparation type of magic. Instead, whenever violence is called for, she deploys any one of three undead minions.
Valeria is a necromancer who specializes in plague and creating advanced undead, particularly the Ghoulification process. A more advanced strain of undeath that enhances the physical attributes of the subject, while giving them the minds of feral predators and an eternal hunger for flesh, living or dead. They are often noted as the embodiments of gluttony, as natural ghouls are spawned from those who consumed the flesh of their own kin.
Originally a curse that only affects sentient beings; she has somehow applied it to animals, mostly by force feeding them their own kind. Valeria’s hunger in part may also stem from interacting with these creatures for so long. The Ghoulification Plague itself can be considered an undead Virus or bacteria.
Ghouls also require significantly more power to control on a necromancer’s part, and thus skilled necromancers like Valeria can only actively control one kind of creature at a time when not commanding her Brute.
Indeed, Ghouls not under a necromancer’s control are constantly aching with hunger, and will hunt and kill any living thing to consume them with a gluttonous appetite. When not in use they are kept in the Bleak Academy’s Flesh Pits, fed the... excess... waste material from the horrific experiments conducted there. Valeria has also had to develop spells of ritual binding to put these monsters into a ‘sleep mode’ when not in use.
Plague Swarm: A swarm of undead rats, or insects. They spread infection and death, and rapidly reduce bodies to bare bones in minutes. The Swarm can occupy up to four square meters of volume, though are highly capable of passing through the smallest pipes and passage ways. The Swarm is a covert biological weapon, capable of delivering disease to unprotected populations, while also an effective terror tool. They are also highly renewable.
Swarm Traits: Highly resistant to conventional attacks. Highly vulnerable to area attacks. Swarms do not attack, instead automatically damaging anything living or otherwise they also occupy the space of.
Death Hounds: Ghoulification applied to Noxian War Dogs, making these beasts deadlier and incredibly tenacious. They retain their pack hunting instincts and aggression, and will often if not always eat their intended victims, attempting to take large bites out of them. Swift and brutal, the Hounds are Valeria’s man hunters, untiring in their search for prey. These Hounds’ attacks have natural life steal, as they are healed whenever they consume flesh. As each Hound must have been an excellent example of their kind in life, their numbers are slower to replenish.
The Brute: The Brute itself is unintelligent, taking verbal or telepathic commands from Valeria, control made secure by a powerful necromantic charm. It follows its last issued order until told to stop. There is a small chance it goes berserk in battle as flashes of its living memories return, but Valeria knows the binding spells that sedate the Brute.
Left on its own, the creature is nothing more than a statue of flesh with no initiative. It will defend itself from attack, but otherwise stay in place. When an enemy shows they are determined to destroy the Brute, it will fight until the threat is no more.
The Brute does not speak, but it can growl or roar to indicate the limited mental states it can be in.
The abilities below outline the Brute’s (Murder Train’s) powers.
Infection: The Brute’s vile tongues wrap around his fists and seep an infecting pestilence into the gauntlets when not being used to Lash out. Basic attacks slow and weaken enemies; undead are also affected, as their negative energy bleeds from them. Living creatures slain while Infection rise up as ghouls in 1 to 4 hours.
Rampage: (Requires minimum casting distance; target area must be at least 50 feet away.) The Brute charges towards a location, smashing aside most obstacles, terrain and enemies along the way. The location is understandably, not a good place to be.
Howl of Doom: (only usable when attacked.) Beats on his chestplate and unleashes a terrible howl that enrages him, increasing AD for five minutes. Moreover, there is a chance that the last enemy to injure him is feared. (Lasts five turns, cooldown of five turns after end of duration.)
Ahhh, Fresh Meat: : Grabs a hold of and Bites down on a target, likely dealing excruciating pain. The Brute is healed for 40% of the corpse's maximum hp, reflecting its ability to absorb part of the target’s life force. The Brute may also devour corpses to heal itself, but not as efficient as eating living things. Has a one hour cooldown, but can eat up to four living creatures or eight corpses in one sitting. (He's a messy eater so there'll be plenty of leftovers.)
Death Bomb: The necrotic and alchemic fluids within the Brute are usually inert, but volatile when mixed and subject to a third compound in a reservoir inside its skull cavity. At the press of a button, Valeria can cause a chain reaction that causes the Brute to literally explode, destroying it and everything around it.
ROLE PLAY ABILITIES:
Necromancer of Negative Energy: Valeria has taken on the initial aspects of undead, Rather than command hordes of undead, being healed by negative energy. Valeria uses up all her control capability to command a single monstrosity, a Death Brute. She can also heal the Brute outside combat. She may also create advanced varieties of undead, but such an act is dangerous as the creatures are not automatically under her control.
The creation of the undead is ritualistic in nature, requiring ten or more minutes of uninterrupted work; thus Valeria can never create undead in combat, at least until she advances in power.
Also, Valeria maintains a youthful appearance by the ritual draining of another’s essence. Because her life force became de-stabilized due to her early studies, she must now regularly dine upon life force. She only needs to dine a few times a year, but it has since begun to form into something of an addiction. Again, not a combat ability.
Doctor of Medicine: Valeria is learned in several fields of medicine- surgery, anatomy, pathology, arcane medicine. Someone has to ensure the proper anatomy of the Brutes to make their animation as efficient as possible.
Relationships:
Dr. Pavel Orsini – Father. Zaunite doctor of medicine. Divorced from her mother, but maintains regular contact. The divorce was due to Adrianna pressing Valeria into advanced necromancy too soon, causing her to become something akin to a soul eating monster. Pavel himself is a doctor and a man of morals- at least concerning his family.
Lady Adrianna Van Mordenheim – Mother. Bleak Academy Professor and senior Necromancer. Adrianna nurtured intellect and ambition in her daughter, and still keeps a close eye on her. Some detractors say Valeria is just a pawn of her mother’s.
General Septimus Thralk – High Command General who met his unfortunate demise at the Bleak Academy due to a virulent plague. Advocated for the immediate closure of the academy, the indefinite confinement of Noxian Necromancers and the dismantling of the Noxian undead contingent.
Markal Cassalantar and the Witherwood Arcane College - The main academic rivals of the Bleak Academy. Always having competed for prestige, sometimes in violent manner with one another. Valeria wants Witherwood to back her grab of the High Command, if only in not getting in her way. Markal is among key figures she must sway to gain Witherwood's support.
Description:
APPEARANCE:
A comely, petite blonde young woman would be difficult to take seriously as a threat or let alone a General- and that is precisely what Valeria wants her opponents to do.
She dresses as someone befitting her position as one of the Bleak Academy's leaders, with a touch of prettiness to keep others underestimating her.
PERSONALITY:
Intelligent and canny, resourceful and opportunistic, and soft spoken but ruthless, Valeria is a closed book that has earned many admirers and detractors, her demure behavior worlds apart from the actions and events that have benefited her. Her youthful appearance, sustained with necromantic practices, belies the mind behind it. Truly, her accelerated aging caused a desperation in her to become incredibly self-centered and amoral. She is a pacifist in name only; while she will never engage in hostile actions, she never hesitates to unleash her abomination against an enemy.
Valeria is a scholar and academic first, and highly values knowledge. She is well aware of the threat posed by the Ruined King upon living civilization- but she cannot help but feel a desire to research and understand the Necromancy of the Shadow Isles. She would want to use this knowledge for the benefit of Noxus... and herself.
On the high command though, Valeria comes off as inexperienced compared to the other Generals- her youth and initiative are not yet a match to their experience. Her tactics as well are unorthodox and untested, formulated on the fly rather than practical and reliable in nature. She shows her elders due respect, but resents being looked down upon.
THE BRUTE:
This 13 foot tall, 12,000 pound abomination is cobbled together from Minotaur and Noxian dead; the Minotaur's skeleton provides a sturdy frame, but with most of the muscle rotted away, human muscle tissue is substituted. A complex mixture of alchemical reagents and necromantic energies fuel it. The thing is distilled death and rage, held together in a carapace of iron and steel, bolted into place fresh from the forge. It wears a helmet to hide the rotten skull, and the thing's tongue hangs obscenely when its lower jaw plate is removed.
Assembling and animating such a creature requires 2 weeks of work, and Valeria may only exercise control over one at a time.
Biography:
EARLY LIFE:
Valeria is the only daughter of a Bleak Academy professor and a zaunite doctor, and as such was driven from an early age by her parents to excel, meeting their expectations. She had finished her basic education quite early, and begun training in medicine since she was 14. However, her early forays into Necromancy resulted in an accident that caused her life force to become unstable, causing her to age at an accelerated rate. She turned to medicine first to find a cure, but soon found that the cure was in the life force of others. By stealing theirs, she could sustain herself and grow up normally. Her father, a more moral man, could not forgive her mother for recklessly endangering their only child.
DOCTOR-NECROMANCER OF THE BLEAK ACADEMY:
Having received her medical training in Zaun, Valeria graduated at 18 and earned her doctorate and a tenure at 24, being not only a competent physician but also extremely good at creating advanced forms of undead as well as her research into magically empowered diseases.
She has developed a ghoulifying plague, but without an enemy to use it on it has been kept under wraps. She had also perfected her life stealing, and keeps herself in optimal condition by draining test subjects from the Academy.
Dr. Mordenheim's military record is brief, having served as a military doctor that tended to injured Noxian officers as well as a torture technician. While on a campaign to pacify barbarians in Frejlord, their troops were ambushed and forced to retreat- but Valeria used the dead on both sides to create her first Brute. The sight of their fallen used in such a manner enraged the barbarians, causing them to abandon their ambush... and were promptly crushed.
THE BLACK ROSE:
Dr. Mordenheim was offered membership to the Black Rose at the conclusion of her doctorate, as her mother was a long time member who wished to retire. She was recommended a place in the mysterious order, and delivered to them a sampling of her Ghoulifying plague- a virulent disease that was incredibly difficult to cure, and was almost always fatal. A controlled release in the lowest levels of Noxus's Labyrinthine underground demonstrated just how it was effective, the disease capable of hiding inside common grain and meat.
HIGH COMMAND GENERAL:
With the aid of, and the motivation from the Black Rose, Valeria took her entire Order, and the Academy by surprise by showing the drive, ambition and initiative to seize a seat upon the High Command.
It began when General Thralk, a… failed product of the academy, began making noise about the possibility of Noxus's Necromancers may be compromised by the threat of the Isles. Thralk met an unfortunate accident while inspecting the Bleak Academy. The Academy’s Official Statement was that,
‘He and his bodyguards had blithely ignored safety precautions, insisting the staff were hiding something from him. They entered the plagues chamber while it was under quarantine, and unwittingly unleashed an incredibly virulent pestilence that slew a score of Academy Staff as well as causing the General’s slow, agonizing death.’
Thralk’s subordinates scrambled to secure his seat, but a month after the incident they had all either perished or voiced support for a wild card- that was Valeria.
If the leaders of the Academy have an opinion in Valeria, they prefer to keep it discreet. Since she mostly used diplomacy (and bribery) to deal with her own kind, and since she has voiced no desire to advance within Academic ranks, they see no reason to oppose her. In fact, a High General from the intellectual elite of Noxus would serve to encourage more applicants to the Bleak Academy. Also, since her professor status would be suspended due to her duties as a High Command General, her opponents in Academia also find supporting her decision beneficial to them.
PRESENT DAY:
Valeria consolidated her grip on her candidacy, gathering support from The Black Rose, Thralk’s old allies as well as the unanimous representation of the Bleak Academy, in all their affairs with High Command. She is, on the surface, a representative that assures the High Command that Noxus’s Necromancers will not answer to anyone but the Grand General himself and the State.
She also seeks the support of their chief rival academy, the Witherwood Arcane College- mostly in reassurances that she won't encounter any competition, thus causing a dragged out conflict towards the top. She is currently mobilizing resources to ensure this- sharing raw materials with the College to appease them. Of course, one particularly outspoken critic who called her out as power hungry and thought about being High Command was also promptly silenced and disappeared.
