April 21st, 22 CLE - Short distance from Jayce's Laboratory
If you had ever told him that he would one day find himself moving through the streets of Piltover, Viktor might have scoffed at you. However, today was the day that you would be proven right and that Viktor would have been eating his own denial....
The Machine Herald, known throughout Valoran as an amazing inventor hailing from the city-state of Zaun, could not believe how pristine and untainted the City of Progress was. Everywhere he looked there was something intriguing to beheld, from the intently designed buildings to the simply humble people. For the past half hour he had been receiving looks of curiosity from the good people of Piltover, which he credited to his rather unorthodox and unexpected presence in their city.
Word had spread of a certain crystal that had been unearthed by a certain Prodigal Explorer, who had seen fit to place it into the custody of a local celebrity inventor. No, not the Revered Inventor. One who held an endless amount of charm, wit, charisma, and ingenuity; his name was Jayce, and apparently he was in the process of studying the crystal for the sake of uncovering its secrets. Currently, all that had been told was that it could hold the potential to generate an undefined amount of energy which could very well be used as a power source. A gem able to power devices for an unspecified amount of time had instantly earned Viktor's interest, and he was almost upon the residence of the man who currently possessed it.
There had been no resistance nor hindrance thus far, as Viktor had already met and spoken with Caitlyn, the Sheriff and undisputed authority of Piltover, to confirm that his visit was purely for the purposes of seeking a professional appointment with the homegrown innovator. It had taken nearly an hour to convince his fellow Champion to allow him to see Jayce, and Caitlyn, for her part, only relented when the Zaunite agreed to be accompanied by a pair of experienced officers.
And so Viktor's entourage made their way ever closer to their destination, and when they finally arrived at the inventor's doorstep the officer to the Herald's right gave him a simple warning.
"Don't ya dare try anythin' funny, pal. Champion or not, we don't take kindly to guys like ya causin' a ruckus."
From behind his mask Viktor rolled his eyes nonchalantly to those empty words, but never the less nodded in understanding. It didn't matter to him, as the only thing he cared about was obtaining the alleged crystal for the sake of the Glorious Evolution. Seemingly satisfied with the Herald's action, the right-side officer gestured to his partner, who then proceeded to interact with a console that was apparently part of some sort of communication system.
"Hey, uh, Jayce? We know you must be busy, but somebody's here to see you."

The crystal glowed ever so brightly, as Jayce continued to work on blueprints and calculations in his secluded workshop. He had been graced with the honour of studying such a brilliant source of energy. It had only been a few days, but preliminary results did show that the crystal had an endless supply of energy. The only problem was... such energy was unstable to harness.
He had tried many things. Capsules? Didn't work. Pure extraction? Didn't work either. He couldn't even make a single dent on it with a special hextech drill, known to cut through anything. Peculiar, this was, and it made him even more interested in it, day by day. He was starting to run out of ideas...
The loud authorative voice outside called. He shook his head for a moment, before removing his glasses, and dragged on his slightly stained lab coat. Groaning, he moved to the door, opening it. The sunlight blinded his eyes for a moment, before his eyes managed to readjust. Standing before him were two guards in official PCS uniform, and behind them a peculiarly dressed man, face hidden behind a metal mask, two golden eyes glaring straight at him. He gulped - what did they want with him? The crystal perhaps?
As the resident of the luxurious laboratory emerged, Viktor's eyes sized him up from behind the golden lenses of his metal face. He wasn't impressed. Jayce appeared, upon this first meeting, to be nothing more than an eclectic buffoon who wasn't even worth the facility he possessed. Fortunately, or not depending on your impression, the same officer on his left spoke before Viktor himself could.
"Ah, terribly sorry to bother you, sir. But this man had arranged with the Sheriff to meet with you. Seems he's got something important to ask you and he refused to be discouraged from seeing you in person."
The officer thumbed at Viktor with his right hand, as if to illustrate his point. Viktor made no move nor did he say anything to either prove or disprove the authority figure's words. He merely remained standing betwixt the pair of men in uniform, staring intently at the man in possession of the recently discovered arcane crystal.
"Viktor." The Herald had finally spoken up for the first time since the trio had left the precinct deeper in town, his voice so sudden and unexpected that both of his chaperones jumped a bit in surprise. "Otherwise known as the Machine Herald, a Champion of the League affiliated with Zaun. I have come to see you personally regarding the crystal you recently came into possession of, as I have a proposal for you." The stoic voice perfectly matched the unerring immobility of the form before the Piltovian inventor, who could not be blamed for being the least bit intimidated in the face of such a passionless disposition.

Jayce was quite surprised as well. The man before him was obviously a genius ahead of his time. The sleek design of this metal body... the alluring voice of steel. It drew him in somehow, and he reached his gloved hand out to attempt to touch it, but he drew himself back in time, shaking his head in confusion.
"You two, please wait for us outside. I wish to talk to him alone."
He gestured for Viktor to follow him inside, and the two guards to leave for the moment.
Both officers tensed up at Jayce's request, turning their heads to look at each other warily. They had been assigned to keep a close eye on the Zaunite "visitor" by the Sheriff herself, which meant that they could be looking at some severe demerits if anything happened on their watch. They had barely any time to respond before Viktor pushed past them and came a just inches from Jayce.
"Those who follow the law so fearfully, cultivating regulation with reckless conviction, are no better than those who seek the freedom to pursue their ambitions with little regard to rules." Although he was referring to the two members of enforcement behind him, his masked visage remained fixed upon Jayce. "Ultimately, the laws of man are meaningless. The only thing that matters is progress, to pave the way one must have a clear and unhindered sight of what is meant to be."

Jayce nodded in what seemed to be agreement, however he himself knew that most of Piltover's denizens lived by the law. He gestured Viktor inside to the table, slamming the door behind him, before offering a seat to the man.
"Tea? ... or perhaps oil? I am quite confused about the nature of your body, what exactly would you enjoy as a beverage?"
He sat there fumbling around. The question he asked was obviously awkward, but he simply did want Viktor to tell him more about that... steel.
Although they were extremely opposed to the idea, the two officers that had accompanied Viktor this far were given no choice in the matter as Jayce welcomed the Herald into his abode. Viktor did not hesitate to accept the welcome, nor did he hold any reservations with leaving the officers outside. He didn't care for such kinds of people anyhow. Good riddance.
As he looked about at his surroundings, the Machine Herald came to formulate a more accurate impression of Jayce. So preoccupied in analyzing the inside of the building was he that he nearly failed to hear his host's offer, at which point he looked to the Piltovian while inclining his head slightly to the left. "Tea.....I do not require such a thing. I have evolved beyond the need for such trifling necessities. That is not to say that I can not ingest drinks and foods as any other, I can in fact do so but I am under no threat of demise in going for long periods of time without them."
He then folded his arms across his chest as he continued to stand despite being offered a seat. Due to the nature of his augmentations, anything not reinforced would merely be crushed under the weight of his artificial parts. "And you are further under the wrong impression that I would require such a crude source of fuel, as my superior anatomy is powered by numerous gears and capacitors."
Post by The Defender of Tomorrow on May 13, 2013 18:54:31 GMT -5
"Interesting..." Jayce went in closer to have a look, and the more he stared, the more beautifully crafted his metal body was. It made him somewhat jealous, yet suspicious at the same time. The robotic arm on Viktor's shoulder kept aiming at him, following as he walked around the room.
"Yes... fascinating. I presume that you augmented yourself? I must say that you've done quite an amazing job."
He was enthralled like a little child with his favorite toy, his curiosity leaving him distracted.
Viktor's eyes followed his host's form with great caution, which also meant his shoulder-arm had trained itself on the independent inventor. It was, after all, linked to Viktor mentally so should he will it so it would waste no time in going on the offensive for his sake. For now, however, Jayce didn't mean any harm to the Herald so the peaceful visit would remain as such. "Yes. Everything you see before you now was done by my very own hands.....Or, at the very least, my original hands. I have designed and crafted the figure I now possess, from the very recesses of my brilliant mind...."
As if to illustrate, the augmented Zaunite held up his left hand as it began to crackle with arcane energy no doubt from whatever power source he utilized. "Both my arms and legs have been entirely replaced with superior hextech prosthetics, and certain sections of my main body have also seen some.....renovations. All of the devices at my disposal have been programmed and synchronized with my mind, even, making me the first of many to come. This is just a mere taste of what the Glorious Evolution entails, along with a spectacular era of techmaturgical dominance. Which brings me to my proposition, and the reason I have come to see you..."
Viktor's demeanor changed somewhat after Jayce's response, the former air of peaceful diplomacy shifting more to slight indignation. "You do not know, Jayce. How can you cast judgment upon something you have not yet experienced, and with such stark disinterest....The Glorious Evolution offers to better the entire world through the unification of one's mind and soul with technology, replacing inferior flesh and bone with vastly superior steel and machinery. Thus far, I've found it rather.....difficult, to empower the devices and parts I've produced, as Zaun has yet to develop an efficient source of fuel. That is not to say that my hextech isn't sufficiently powered, do not misunderstand. I simply mean that most forms of fuel are extremely limited....."
The Herald had begun with chastising the other inventor, but had quickly moved on to a more relevant topic. "Which is why I've come to you directly. I require the crystal. I have heard that it holds the potential to be a source of endless energy, capable of providing power for an indefinite amount of time. Jayce, just think of what this could mean! Not only would we need to be concerned about exhaustion, fatigue, but neither running out of energy! My devices could run for eternity, never losing momentum nor requiring periods of recharging! As you have been entrusted with its care, I am not so daft as to ask you to part with it. You need not be away from it, if you simply come with me. Together, you and I could unlock the secrets it holds and create technology powered by its boundless energy! We could do so much with it - the possibilities are endless!"
At this point the Machine Herald extended his left hand - claw-like in its design - to his Piltovian counterpart, a non-threatening gesture meant to show the physically inferior tinkerer that he wasn't some evil would-be overlord intending to conquer the world, merely a fellow crafter who simply wanted to improve the world around them. "All will soon change, Jayce, so instead of rejecting the inevitable why not embrace it and welcome it with all of your being? I am certain that our minds would benefit Valoran far more in forms that would neither age nor disappear - we could be the eternal masters of technology, designing and building a perfect utopia where death would mean nothing."

His offer is really... tempting. Should I take it? It's rather risky of course.
"Your proposition is quite ambitious, I'm not sure if we'll be able to pull it off. Besides, it merely has the potential, for its worth, it might actually have a limited power source after all! Well, your job here is simple. Help me find a way to harness the crystal's powers, and then we might strike a deal.
Another faulty thing I see in your plan is that... do you have some concrete plan to gather all the residents of Valoran to commit to your... Glorious Evolution?"
He eyed the steel body for a moment, before speaking up again.
"And... I... won't have to go through the same process as you, right?" He winced, augmenting himself must have been painful.
Viktor's steel visage remained as cold and expressionless as ever as the air around him seemed to darken slightly. Jayce's words, and his tone in general, were beginning to take root within the realm of rejection, something that the Machine Herald had no intention of accepting. "Gather.....No. I have no intention of doing such a thing. The people of this world will either come to realize the necessity of disregarding their flesh in favor of augmentation, or they will foolishly bring about their own destruction through their stubbornness. In the end, the Glorious Evolution will be the means through which everything will be totally and utterly optimized."
At this juncture, although his main limbs remained serenely stationary, a flare of slight anger on Viktor's part caused his third arm fidget erratically - convulsing as though it were experiencing some sort of intense feeling of its own. The Zaunite's own tone grew colder and harsher. "There is nothing wrong with seeking perfection, Jayce. Do not be a fool! Your flesh, your organs and tissues, none of it can offer you anything but your timely end! Renounce your frailty! Your weak constitution, your inferior motor functions, your meek physical aptitude! One must not merely use technology as a means to end, but embrace it! One must become one with hextech, to become inseparable and indistinguishable from it! Think about it! What else would you lose from this endeavor but that which holds you back, and threatens to inhibit your potential! Emotions which can easily lead you astray, anatomy that can barely withstand the forces that the universe can apply, a negligible morality only capable of narrowing your views and pure ideals that can easily be corrupted by others who would sooner see you wiped from existence than achieving your most vital goals!"
Viktor's main hands then curled into fists as he clenched them tightly and stared intently at the man before him, as his speech concluded with what his goal was. "That crystal holds more value than anything else in this world. If it can generate an endless supply of energy, then it can be a power source unlike any other. Imagine if you could use it to power a machine for twice, no thrice, its estimated lifetime! It would be unstoppable! Nobody would ever be capable of shutting it down! Anything from weapons to tools, to even forms of transportation! And, ultimately, everyone who has become one with technology would reap all the benefits while the fools who ignored the change would be left to rot in their graves...."

Jayce couldn't believe what he was hearing. The man sought pure, utmost perfection, one that would simply be impossible. If the future were to ever be so dark and grim, uniform and robotic... Just thinking about it sent a nerve-tingling shiver down his spine. Was it really the right thing to restrict the future to just one linear thought like that? He nodded in slight agreement, but he knew that he just had to decline this. The crystal must be used for the benefit of others, not to power some madman's ambition.
"I... your proposal is something that... Although it is tempting to relinquish my flesh for steel, I would rather have to decline. To me... living in a mortal body is really the challenging part of life. We have a certain amount of time to make a name for ourself, progress science to the best! And besides, living forever? That would be boring, I'd get extremely exhausted fast!
Science is a beautiful thing, Viktor. I'd love to help, really... but. I can't."
HE didn't know how to word it, but that was all he managed to. His expression turned solemn, as Viktor's eyes glinted with anger. He had obviously said something wrong. He eyed the crystal warily, before returning the awkward stare. His arms were at his side statically as if something was controlling him, and he couldn't help but stay still, the air around Viktor was simply too intimidating.
"In short... I decline your offer. The crystal is still under Parliament ownership, I am merely analysing it for them, I cannot just give it away..."
And the moment that Viktor secretly dreaded had come, as the words spoken by his counterpart had been heard with the utmost clarity and significance. It had been his sincerest hope that this man, a fellow inventor, would see reason and join forces with him to use the crystal for the benefit of the Glorious Evolution's people. But now he saw all too well just how ignorant and naive the Piltovian genius truly was. Without warning the Machine Herald went on the offensive as a secret compartment in his right leg opened, from where he drew out a smaller version of his staff - a wand really - which he then pointed at the less prepared scientist. There was almost no time for Jayce to react before he was sent flying across the room from the force of an arcane blast produced by the hextech rod in Viktor's right hand, and as his body crashed through the wall into the next room his attacker wasted no time to makes his way over to the crystal that wasn't too far from where they had just been.
The augmented Zaunite took the crystal into his unique left hand, looked down at it with marvel and interest, before briefly looking to where he had just sent the more fragile form of the charismatic inventor. Jayce hadn't yet recovered, and even if he had there was no doubt that he had neither the tools nor the prowess to combat Viktor as they currently were. Suffice it to say, Viktor currently and always possessed to the advantage between the two of them, with Jayce being unable to muster the means to match the clearly superior Champion. Viktor's visit had initially been for the sake of diplomatically enlisting the cooperation of the inventor in possession of the crystal that could be the means to ensuring a prosperous era of augmentation, and he had only resorted to violence due to having no other choice in order to acquire that means.
The Herald spoke not another word, did not address the Piltovian again, as he turned to make his way towards the front door from whence he'd entered. No doubt the two officers Caitlyn had assigned to escort him would be there. He heard the faint groan from behind him as he moved away from the new opening in the wall that Jayce had flown through, but he gave the technician no time to give chase. Another blast from his rod blew a door out of its place and sent it crashing into the pair of unsuspecting men who had stood around waiting for the meeting to end. The force of the door's flight had delivered enough blunt force trauma to kill the two men instantly, unfortunately, but it only proved to make it all the easier for Viktor to make his get away.
On this day, there would be no doubt that the Machine Herald would be branded a criminal and personal enemy to the Sheriff of Piltover, as word of his attack reached her far too late for her to take any action against him. By the time she or any of the police force of Piltover could be sent to the scene of the crime, the Champion's trail had grown cold. Viktor had made a clean get away with the crystal and was set to utilize it for his own machinations....
