Hello fellow creatures and people of Maelstrom!
As the admin team continues to push forward changes that will ultimately lead to a better site for all of our valued writers, we took a look at the Council and at the way Original Characters (OCs) were currently being handled. After a lengthy discussion, we had come to the conclusion that changes were necessary in order to bring back a healthier environment for everyone involved. This includes changes to the Council's current system along with modifications to what is expected of potential OC's.
Some adjustments:
Purpose:
The intention of the original character creation process has always been to help people get their characters into a lore-friendly state with capabilities in line with a global understanding of the world. We want for you to be able to tell original and interesting stories with the characters you bring in, and to do so, we need to be sure that your characters are not only a conceptual match for our world, but also fun to interact with. To this end, the OC creation process has always involved monitoring the power and capabilities of an OC to ensure that your vision doesn’t overshadow others in the community.
We want it to be clear that while the modification of your ideas may be necessary, our goal is to work with you to generate a character that is fun and interesting for both you, and those you work with. The relative secrecy of tho OC council stood as a barrier
With the recent reorganization in adminship, we feel that it’s important that we maintain a greater centralized body of lore to avoid confusion and conflict between roleplayers that aren’t fully familiar with each other’s ideas. Because every accepted character brings with it modifications to our canon, we feel it is becoming more and more important that we as admins maintain an oversight role in their inclusion in our growing story.
Changes:
OCs will still be looked over by the Council, that has not changed. They are still the main voice when it comes to your character. They will work with you in order to suit your character, and make sure it fits Maelstrom's canon. If your character is not up to standards, you will be asked to talk with the Council.
The only real difference is that now the Council must preapprove your character. A new board will be created for any Preapproved characters, where an admin will then look over your character. Only an admin can fully approve your OC.
The Council:
Without further ado, I’d like to introduce the members of our council who have been hard at work, both in the monitoring of original characters and a plethora of helpful tasks.
Victus Brightblade - Master of Arms
Victus has been with us from the very beginning, just passing his one year anniversary of keeping track of the OCs of Maelstrom. His expertise in all things regarding weapons is unsurpassed, and you should certainly check your outlandish or exotic equipment against his lists. He will likely be the first to read over your profile, and can be reached for additional aid through forum PMs, or the Skype name georox3.
Talon - The Storyteller
Talon’s area of expertise lies in his ability to create and evaluate stories within the context of the world we roleplay in. He is generally the go-to guy when it comes to checking the lore that you’ve provided and the path that you want to follow. His skype name is uxaris for contact outside of the Maelstrom website.
Hecarim - The Designer
Hecarim has a passion for evaluating the cohesiveness, fairness, and power of a character’s kit. If you’re having trouble deciding the best way to give your characters’ movements on the battlefield life, he can certainly shed a new light on the realm of possibility. His skype name is tidez09, but we all know him simply as Razie.
Karthus - The Runemage
With a highly codified system of magic, Karthus has helped us to define the role of runes in our canon. Even outside the realm of this awe-inspiring force, he’s certain to provide a helping hand as you develop your magical capabilities. His skype name is experiment.alpha.
Please note that each member’s advice is not limited to their expertise. They’ve been working together for quite some time in character evaluation, and are here to help you create meaningful and lore-friendly characters to populate our world.
Words of Warning:
The admins will not tolerate any deliberate rudeness to the Council's authority. They are ultimately still in charge of your character. If you intend to bypass the Council's words by saying that you would prefer to speak to the admins, we reserve the right to refuse to work on your character.

Some adjustments:
- Raising the standards for OCs. This means that your character must have a clear purpose for existing. Long-term goals and specific objectives must be made clear. We will not accept that your character wishes to "walk around and learn about the world".
- Transparency. People will know exactly who is on the Council and they are encouraged to approach them for assistance.
- Providing a more functional/healthy OC creation process while creating a more defined understanding of what an OC represents
