Biography:
Within the northern most territory of Ionia, a smaller village of humans resided within view of the coast. They thrived upon fishing and often used it as trade with other towns nearby to bring currency through and expand on the area. But it was still small, and some of the people who lived there enjoyed it best that way.
Kumiko and her twin brother were born one early, spring morning when the sun was just beginning to peek over the horizon. The entire day the village took advantage of the news and turned it into a festive party in celebration of the new lives. Everyone was thrilled with the twins, and felt perhaps it was a good omen.
However things would turn for the worst the following spring, nearing the twin’s first birthday. A couple of Zaunites had snuck into the sleepy little place, carefully picking through different houses until they came across the twins. One managed to sneak in through the window where he carefully picked up Kumiko, and started to hand her off to the man outside. Hearing commotion behind him, he turned to find a sword aimed at him. Kumiko’s Father had noticed she was gone, and demanded he return her.
In the heat of the moment, the Zaunite turned a gun on her Father and fired it off twice leaving the man for dead. Screams filled the room, Feng began to cry. The man knew he hadn’t time to grab the other twin, and raced after his partner. However his fate would be sealed as he hit a pit made for hunting game, leaving him at the mercy of the villagers. Refusing to talk, they tortured him but not a peep was spoken. They never did learn where Kumiko was taken. Devastated, her Mother clung to Feng, her son, hoping to someday find her daughter again.
Within the lab in Ionia, they raised her, feeding her experimental food and giving her experimental vaccinations to see how it might change her development. It hardly phased them that she was a human being. To the Zaunite scientist, she was just another experiment, worth nothing more than the results that would come of her. The Zaunite Scientist used genetic mutation on her to try to create a superior human being. They used the DNA of a Bay Cat, one of the more rare species of Ionia who could live and adapt to any environment with ease. This adaptability was one of his goals. Others included heightened hearing, enhanced night vision, balance, and leg alterations to assist with impact allowing her to fall from high places.
The result of these experiments gave them some of what they wanted. The ears replaced her human ones, and a tail extended out from her lower back. She would learn through trial and error how to handle falling and taking impact, only strengthened by the genetic mutations that had taken place within her legs. However visibly they appeared human.
When Kumiko was five, the Kinkou infiltrated the lab and destroyed it, freeing the Ionians afflicted with such painful experiments. Those who survived returned home. All except Kumiko, who had no memory of her home, or who she was. The scientist never gave her a name, only addressing her by a number. She had odd mutations, and had shown a stunt in her growth for her age, indicating she would surely be below average in height. She looked frail, and frightened and would not accept any name besides the odd number assigned to her.
She was taken to an monastery as an orphanage where she began to study different fighting styles, determined to someday overcome the obstacles of her early life. Perhaps even joining the Kinkou. The monks there named her Kumiko Sai Lau, but later gave her the nickname 'Amaya' meaning Night Rain as she was often found standing outside in the middle of the night during heavy rainstorms, just enjoying the sound of it hitting everything around her. It gave her a picture of what everything looked like as her vision was fading and she knew she could eventually become completely blind.
By the age of 14, her vision was completely lost likely resulting from the experiments. Still, with the knowledge she had she learned to adapt her fighting style and swordsmanship to work with the vision impairment, creating her own unique form.
At the age of 18, she left the monastery in search of her path.
Kumiko can often times be heard out near a stream, playing on a wooden flute to help sooth her nerves and meditate. When she is not practicing, she is learning to enjoy the world and through her flute, she tells her tale.
