Maelstrom was conceived as a roleplaying environment in which members can weave stories and explore the expansive world that Riot has provided us in the lore of League of Legends. To do so, we need to be able to dissociate ourselves from the lore that defines the game. With our launch in December 2012, our members have been hard at work defining, building upon, and evolving the Maelstrom canon of events. We are not only open to, but welcome the exploration of events on a world-changing scale.
We recognize that in this time, Riot has continued to expand upon, modify, and incorporate new information into its own canon lore. While we welcome the introduction of vibrant new characters and themes, the continuity of events in our world do not always allow us to incorporate these modifications fully. Please keep the following considerations in mind when planning your stories.
As always, communication is key in roleplaying. Efforts are under way to make the Maelstrom canon more accessible to new members and those who have limited time to stay informed of the current events of the world. In the meantime, feel free to ask questions as you need to.

- The precise lore that any individual champion follows is defined at the digression of that champion’s roleplayer.
- Sweeping changes to Riot’s canon tend to be disruptive to our stories, and may not be fully integrated into our own.
- Newly released champions are not well known in our world, and need to introduce themselves or gain notoriety of their own actions.
- Please respect the writing of all members, including those who have been unable to continue their work.
- Out of context knowledge should never color a character’s in context actions. This is doubly true when those events may or may not have happened in our canon.
