Hixon almost gasped at the response; no one had ever declined a position in the hospital before, much less one of the most prestigious positions that could be offered.
However, Winters seemed to fully understand her, and simply nodded. As if he knew what to do next, though, he went down into his desk and drew out another form, this one looking much simpler to read. He took the offer document from Elenwe before handing her the other paper.
"If you only wished to work for a certain amount of time, then why didn't you ask? Just write the day you wish to leave employment, and on that day you will be relieved of your duties."
"However, it is not hospital policy to then fully disconnect from the former employee: should you ever wish to come back to work after being relieved for any reason, the hospital will gladly accept you back to the position you were when you departed."
"As to the vacant position... I believe my superior will now handle that part. Thank you for at least considering it, however."
"We serve those that need help, because we're Medics: that's our job." -Major Lewis
"Sometimes, ordinary people can do extraordinary things: Medics need to do that everyday." -Captain Winters
"In this world, we're a team. There is no I in team, simple as that. We either work as one, or we all fail, all seperate from each other." -Lieutenant Hixon
Elenwe took the form and filled it out. Considering the huge pay grade, she expected to stay only two months, enough time for her to refine her medical lore. This would also give her time to bond properly with the staff and possibly the medics; perhaps even join them on one of their ‘rescue missions’.
She hands it over, her mood quickly improving. She even came over and gave Winters a hug and a playful peck on the cheek. “Thank you so much for your understanding. I do wish to be of help, but I also need to settle my own business first. Then, I shall return to help miss Madison in the delivery room. Have a good day, Major.”

Winters gave a small smile in response, and nodded.
"Very well, Miss Elenwe. Good luck wherever you go once you leave," and in a rather surprising move, stood up, and saluted; Hixon, astonished, did the same.
After Elenwe left the room, Hixon turned to Winters.
"Sir... was it?..."
"Lieutenant, I do admit that I might be taking a shot in the dark with this woman. However, from what I can possibly see, she might prove to be more beneficial to both of us in the long run... in the meantime, you are dismissed."
Winters and Hixon saluted each other, and Hixon left the room. Winters sat back down, and cleaned through the final reports for the day before retiring for the night himself.
The future would prove to be interesting, indeed...

Some days later, Elenwe decided to spend her day off training with her blade in the hospital yard at dawn, where no one was looking. The weapon glowed a deep icy blue, Frejlordi runes of power written upon the broadsword's length. Elenwe was dressed as she always was, plus an extra coat- as the morning seemed colder than usual.

Normally, at this time in the morning, all of the Medics usually already had operations to go to, and so didn't really have the time to notice anything unusual. However, today, two of the Medics were on break in-between rather intensive neuro-surgical procedures: Sgt. Lipton and Pvt. Durnfellow. Both Human and Yordle decided to walk outside to get some 'outside' air, as they called it; not that they complained about the air quality inside, but they did like the 'nature' feel that could be felt in the yard.
They only took a few steps before noticing Elenwe, and when they saw the sword, both could only stare in somewhat unbelievable silence. A few minutes later, Lipton finally got the courage to stop looking and approach the nurse's assistant. The yordle followed behind.
Needless to say, both were both awed, and in a way, somewhat wary... neither had ever seen such a weapon before, and it's glow only made the Medics a tiny, though not noticeable, fearful of what it exactly was; not that fearing mattered to them anyways... and if they were, they certainly didn't show it as Lipton tried to call out to her.

"Ahm! Hello!" Elenwe noticed the arrival of two spectators, and promptly paused her exercise.
"Oh, pardon me. I didn't want to bother anyone, and I wanted to get some practice in with my weapon... I hope it's not much trouble... You are combat medics, yes? I have yet to see you train for the combat part..."
The blade's arcane power slowly dimmed as Elenwe lowered it. She had built up a diffused sweat, but the cool temperature around the blade would make perspiration unnecessary. Upon closer observation, it was clear that Elenwe struggled to use the weapon in one hand; the broadsword was large and heavy, meant to be used by a much bigger warrior.

Lipton and Durnfellow nodded at her response; upon hearing her ending comment, Lipton responded.
"Ah, that is true, miss. But, we do not train out in the yard; rather, there is a training facility where we condition ourselves in preparation for our next deployment."
While Lipton responded, Durnfellow noticed that Elenwe was somewhat struggling with her weapon. Upon Lipton finishing, he spoke up.
"Ah, miss... are you okay with handling that weapon of yours?" he asked, in a more polite tone.

Spooks smiled cheekily, sticking out her tongue in amusement.
"Well...no, not really. I know how to use it in one hand, but I'm afraid I don't nearly have enough arm strength for it. And I'm not really... trained to use it in two hands either. This sword isn't mine... well, actually it is mine... it just wasn't made for me. It's my father's, you see, and from what I can glean from the sword's memories, he was this tall!"
She gestured to a height of seven feet, standing on tipped toes if necessary. It was easily understandable that such a big weapon belonged in the hands of a giant of a man.

Lipton and Durnfellow were rather un-surprised at Elenwe's explanation: after all, such a weapon looked rather unwieldy in such a woman's hands, it only made sense that someone big could possibly handle such a thing.
The description of Elenwe's father did not passed unchecked through the Medics, however.
"Well, d---, I don't think even Major Lewis is that tall, is he?" Durnfellow commented.
"No, Durnfellow: Lewis is stupidly tall, but even he ain't as tall as that..." Lipton answered.
He then turned to Elenwe. "So, if it's not meant for you, how do you manage?"

Spooks looked at her sword once more, held in one hand and the tip resting on the ground. She shrugged, and explained away.
"Well...I don't really use it in fights... in fact I don't think I ever have... It's really just good exercise, and one of the few ways I can see my father via my Past Sight."
She sighed. It was her only link to her paternal heritage, and most of it was fighting and ceremonies. "You... would it be a bit troublesome if I could join you during your exercises? perhaps someone will know how to wield a sword in two hands."

Lipton and Durnfellow looked at each other for a moment before Lipton turned back to Elenwe and responded.
"Ah... well, the facility is usually restricted to PMC servicemen, but there's a bigger issue in front of it; in combat, we do not employ typical melee weaponry, if even engage in a melee at all; our main form of combat is through firearms, and if in a melee engage with combat knives and unarmed training..."
"...back to the question of training... you'll need to see Captain Winters about that," Lipton concluded; Durnfellow simply nodded in agreement.

"I see... well, I will keep that in mind, when I see him. Meanwhile I will emulate my Frejlordi forebears; they seem to have great physiques. I can only guess how they achieve those..." Spooks sighed, patting her belly twice to emphasize. Like any girl her age, she was conscious of her image. She danced and did much walking, but she also was a very hearty eater, with a weakness for sweets.
"Firearms? What are those?" She followed up with a question.

Lipton mentally chuckled. Women in their primes liked to think of how they looked, it seemed; he wondered how many women cared more for their capability than their looks.
Elenwe's question cut that line of thought short, however. Almost shocked to hear the question itself, he looked to Durnfellow, who nodded and left; within the minute, he returned, carrying a rather functional, yet slightly aesthetic, weapon. He tossed it up to Lipton, who then explained the term to Elenwe.
"Well, 'firearm' is synonymous with the term 'gun', which is a weapon incorporating a metal tube from which bullets, shells, or other missiles are propelled by explosive force, typically making a characteristic loud, sharp noise. This happens to be one we employ as standard issue to all combat Medics, although usually without this scope attached," holding the weapon in a more natural position.

"I see. may I touch it?" She asked nicely, always eager to take a look at objects' pasts. Retrocognition of objects, especially new ones, was usually much easier, though having never encountered firearms, Spooks was too curious for her own sake.
