This time, the black queen did not move to check the king again. Instead, Swain's trembling hand slid her to the back lines, where she completely immobilized the king. If he moved forward, the black pawn would have him. Back or to the side? The queen would have her way. Gnarled hands folded beneath The Master Tactician's chin. Victory was in sight.

After a few moments' pondering, Swain abruptly withdrew his queen from enemy territory, setting her comfortably upon F6 so that Singed's side of the board would be more free to move, to open up new opportunities. The Grand General would wait, watch, calculate, consider...

His trembling hand slid his rook to D8 in preparation for the final set-up, the coup. Everything must be in order. The Master Tactician pressed on, manipulating the board to suit his purposes.

A race against time as the black pawn inched closer to the 8th line, aspiring to queenship itself. But a quick calculation told The Master Tactician his own plan was near enough to realization to succeed. He slid his queen back across the board, into the white king's territory and both sheltered by and a threat to the white castle.

Oh, ho. A show of aggression. A subtle smirk crinkled the wrinkles at The Master Tactician's eyes as he slid his rook across the board, right next to Singed's. The white rook would fall no matter where it went--or it would be forced to abandon its fellows through the assault.

One step closer. The pawn slid sideways to claim the castle, which The Master Tactician added to his collection. On the far side of the board, Singed's own pawn aspired to queenship as well, but it was not in as advantageous a position as it might have been.
Swain's face remained impassive, perfectly poised, not a twitch to indicate that victory hovered just a few moves out of reach. If the Chemist continued his forward assault, the white back lines would be left defenseless to the coming onslaught.

The Grand General slid his pawn onto Singed's back line, where it completed its ascent. "Pawn becomes queen," he rasped evenly, folding his hands again upon the table. Beatrice twittered, perhaps sensing the approach of the game's conclusion.
