The forest was quiet on this typical spring morning. A lone yordle was sitting on an ancient tree stump, small legs dangling over it's edge. The mist around him made it difficult to see more than a few feet, but he'd lived here long enough to be well aware of his surroundings. The yordle lifts a small, wooden instrument to his lips, simply holding it there for a second. Then he begins to play... and a sweet melody slowly drifts through the winds and out through the forest. This is that fabled melody, the one said to be heard by those who wander the forest with open ears.
The Bandle City Band is barely waking up from the slow and relaxing music whistling in the wind. They and other random wanderers at random times heard of a legend of mysterious music in the forest. One could speculate an angel while others fearful thought of a sedative predator.
While some ignore the melody outright because they're sleeping, some can make out a few notes of some windpipe piece, and a very few could hear a soft melody.
Yoshi, however, can feel the melancholic tone of the wind. The origin of the music and the being or something playing it is mysterious as the dense fog in early spring morning. He can feel the music in his soul. Yoshi gets up and quietly looks around to see if anyone has the flute playing...but not everyone is awake. Only his friend Horatio and a few others are awake and they are not playing any instruments.
"Keep the camp in watch, Horatio," Yoshi said before he ventures out to the forest.
His wand is with him at all times in case danger arises. Recently, the travels have become more perilous and now some city-states cannot be visited at all. The Band has been forced to limited travels and practice defensive magic to protect themselves. Nowhere is safe, not even the dense thick forest. Yet Yoshi keeps going, using its ears to guide him into the source of the melody.
Does it respond to music?
His wand glows light blue with musical energy. He hums the exact note, dynamic, and tempo as the wind. The wand amplifies his voice so that it can resonate through the forest. Maybe the mysterious noise can respond...
Teo continues to play the soft melody, not picking up the voice immediately. Soon, though, he quiets his playing enough to hear it, and quickly cuts off his song to look around. His fur bristles in fear and he pulls his knees up to his chest, nervously looking around before calling out.
The melody soon dies down and soon Yoshi's own voice is the only song in the forest. When Yoshi finds himself singing to himself, he lowers his wand and slows down his pace. The song...it's gone. Then this...
"W-who...who's there?"
He doesn't know where the voice came from. The thick dense morning fog only makes the situation even graver. He quickly looks to his left, then, right, then back, then turns around three times as if in a panic. The wand glows again and Yoshi places the tip in front of his mouth as if it were a microphone. He doesn't know how to respond to it, just keep talking.
"A music fellow."
Yoshi's voice resonate into the forest, hoping whatever it is can talk back to him.
Teo blinks, his ears turning slightly in either direction. He's unable to detect where the voice is coming from, but... maybe it was friendly.
"Music? Like... like this?"
He crosses his legs, sitting a bit further back on the stump. His fur was still bristling and he couldn't stop shivering from nerves, but his curiosity pushes him past it. Taking a few breathes, the bard lifts his flute to his lips and begins to play again, another tune. As the volume lifts and more instruments fill the melody, the sun begins to shine through and thin out the fog little by little, until the whole meadow was glistening in the morning dew and the sun shined brightly down on little Teo.
When the music played, Yoshi sense the peaceful sound softly pulsating throughout the forest. The fog begins to slowly clear as sunlight penetrates to the ground in an ever harmonious glory. His breathing rate slows to match the slow melody Teo pours out. He walks a few more steps with the environment more revealing and natural than ever. Then finally as he takes a turn, he spots a young boy on a tree stump, and the source of the beautiful melody. Smiling and curious, he takes steps forward towards Teo.
When Teo finishes the song, he opens his eyes slowly at first. The sound of footsteps in the brush alerted him and he turned, seeing Yoshi for the first time. His nerves crept back on him, and he slowly inched backwards on the stump, faintly whimpering, until he falls off and onto his back. Pain shot through him when his head struck a root, making him turn onto his stomach and grip his aching head. He lay there, shivering and cringing in pain.
When Teo hit his head on the ground, Yoshi ran towards him to see what's wrong. There he saw a cringing yordle, thinking that he's desperate for help. He sits down, gently grabs his head and rubs it to mend the pain.
When Yoshi touches him, Teo freezes, though he's still shivering slightly. He slowly opens his eyes, seeing the other yordle kneeling next to him. A faint whimper escapes his lips and he closes his eyes in fear.
Teo tenses up, hugging his flute close to his chest as arms wrap around him. It's been years since he'd been hugged, and the feeling was foreign to him. He shivered nervously in Yoshi's arms, but somewhere in the back of his mind he was oddly comforted and mustered up the strength to utter a simple word.
Yoshi hugs Teo for a few more moments before letting him go. He then gently picks him up and sets him down on the tree stump. Then he kneels in front of Teo so that the two are at eye level with each other.
Teo does his best not to make eye contact, constantly looking down or slightly off to the side. He certainly wasn't comfortable around strangers. Of course, almost everyone who found him in the forest was a stranger, and he never went into the city often enough to really talk to anyone. His voice stays low and stutters often, emphasizing how nervous he is.
"U-uh... it's... Teo..."
The comment about his music makes his fur bristle slightly and a faint blush shows under his fur. He holds his flute close to his chest still, as if trying to squeeze a small ounce of comfort out of it desperately.
He can sense Teo's hesitation, doubt, and shyness. Maybe he has lived in the forest all of his life. Perhaps he was a loner. But Yoshi felt like he needs a friend.
Turning his head towards Yoshi, the little yordle blinks curiously. He doesn't make eye contact, but he does go as far as looking at Yoshi's hands and chest.
"You do...? I r-really like music."
Without noticing it, the corners of his mouth turn up slightly to form a very faint, gentle smile, his hands loosening their grip on the flute a little.
